SOCCER CHAMPIONS HONORED - The Islip Town Board celebrated the Brentwood Boys Varsity Soccer team on their NYS Title this year. The team won the New York State Championship defeating Fairport 4-0 in the State finals. This is Brentwood’s 4th State Soccer Title! The team ended the season with a 22-0 record, and was ranked Top Boys Public School team in the nation by FAB 50, USA Today and United Soccer Coaches Polls for the second time. Virtual Enterprise Teams Earn Medals Islip High School’s two Virtual Enterprise International program teams recently participated in the annual Long Island Regional Business Plan and Trade Show at LIU Post, competing against 115 high school firms across Long Island and bringing home two medals. The firms – Fashion Cents, which offers monthly clothing subscriptions and premade clothing bundles, and Gifts to Go, which sells a variety of theme baskets –developed and presented a business plan to a panel of judges. The students look forward to preparing and competing in the national business plan competition and trade show in April in New York City.

New York Is Home To Historic St. Patrick’s Day Parade

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762.

Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture.

New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home.

Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only.

Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died.

St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233.

St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons.

The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions.

Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate.

Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved.

Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities.

Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent.

Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Five exceptional Islip High School wrestlers – Jack Spahn (first place at 160 pounds), Francis Whitehouse (second place at 145 pounds), Sean Petersen (third place at

132 pounds), Logan Delisle (fifth place at 120 pounds) and Matt Hole (sixth place at 138 pounds) – earned All-County honors at the Suffolk County Division I championships on Feb. 16,

held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.

Their wins qualified Spahn and Whitehouse to represent Islip at the 2020 NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships in Albany.

East Islip High School’s wrestling team recently competed in the League IV championships at Bellport High School, boasting 11 place winners and earning third place overall as a team with 171 total points.

The Redmen had three finalists: freshman Justin Shayew (29-7) at 99 pounds, junior Michael Colon (24-10) at 152 pounds and senior Arjay Wilko (31-7) at 182 pounds.

seeded Vincent Romano of North Babylon High School. Other outstanding efforts for East Islip included seventh grader Logan Alfalla (23-12) placing third at 99 pounds, eighth grader Sebastian Regis (16-9) placing fourth at 220 pounds, junior Louie Cinquemani (2012) placing fourth at 126 pounds, junior Shane Lyons (18-6) placing third at 152 pounds, junior Peter Carino (26-4) placing third at 160 pounds, junior Rich

Jennifer Beck’s fourth grade class at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School recently hosted a “Sway Café Day” after completing Native American research reports using Microsoft’s Sway digital storytelling app. The students helped transform the classroom into a café theme, creating menus, name tags and posters, and then welcomed visiting family members for presentations.

“It was a fun and interactive way for students to showcase their research and technology skills,” said Beck. “We had so much fun preparing for our big day, but even more fun sharing our reports with our special guests. I am so proud of these amazing students.”

Dedicated Drama Club The Drama Club at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School recently presented the memorable musical “Annie,” directed by third-grade teacher Dennis Clancy. Cast and crew dedicated many hours learning songs, memorizing lines and creating the set.

With more than 50 students participating in the Drama Club, two performances were necessary to accommodate all of the proud participants.

In lieu of charging admission for attending,
