External Diploma Program

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations.

EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home.

Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions.

Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

element of peacefulness to her work. Tracy credits her Native American ancestors for being deeply inspired by nature.

Tracy expresses herself through many different mediums, having studied fine art and commercial photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has also

taken up sculpture, and now runs an artisanal soap company, Cedar and Bennet, from her home.

“It is important for me to constantly learn in creating my artwork, while still giving myself the creative license necessary to form a compelling piece.

Focusing on strong compositions, I allow the paints to do the work and use explosive colors to give the piece that feeling of ultra-reality.”

For the pieces in this Apple Bank of Smithtown exhibit, Tracy focuses on

how colors play with each other, and the subtly in light and shadow.

Brentwood Teacher to Transform Classroom with State Farm Grant A Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) educator is one of 40 teachers in New York State selected as a recipient of the $2,500 State Farm Teacher Assist program grant. Ms. Allison Lynch, an ENL teacher at North Middle School, will allocate the funds towards her standing desk project to enhance her students’ classroom experiences.

“I want my students to feel like the scholars I know they are, so why not give them a desk that makes them feel that same way,” said Allison Lynch. “I love witnessing their eyes light up when

they read a novel with me that inspires them to keep reading, or when they have that ‘Aha!’ moment when tackling a challenging topic. This year specifically, I’ve had so many moments where I find myself learning from the students just as much as they learn from me.”

A colleague, who was aware of Allison’s vision to provide her students with an appealing learning environment that emphasizes collaboration and focus, informed her of the upcoming application and encouraged her to apply. Steadfast in seeing her goal come

to fruition, Allison completed an application, which highlighted her innovative teaching vision, to be reviewed by the State Farm Review Committee.

As detailed in her application, Allison will allocate the funds to purchase standing/rolling individual desks for her students, since research has shown that standing and movement while learning can improve retention rates and aid students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The portable desks, which feature enough space for

a laptop and books, will create a more versatile learning environment and provide Allison’s students the autonomy to safely collaborate while enforcing the district’s social distancing protocol of 6 feet.

Allison began her career in education with Brentwood in 2007 as an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher. Afterwards, she pursued a certificate in Teaching English as a second language (TESOL) and took her talents to West Middle School, East Middle School and to her current assignment in North Middle School.

This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850.

It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

East Islip High School’s robotics classes recently completed a multi-day tournament with their newly constructed VEX Swept Away game robots, guided by technology teacher James Connell.

The student groups had six weeks to design, build and test their robots prior to the competition, which is designed to help introductory robotics students learn about competition robotics.

This year presented some interesting challenges, as many of the students were part of the district’s hybrid model of instruction. This meant that they were only constructing their robots for half the week while studying and learning robotics theory – such as gear ratios, electronics and chassis design – for

the second half. Since the school has been utilizing Google Classroom for the entire year, the matches were recorded and posted on class Google streams with daily results so that students could rewatch, study and analyze their teams’ victories and losses.

This proved to be an asset for the students in designing and creating the best competition robots possible.

East Islip Middle School technology education students were also invited to watch and study some of the matches live via Google Classroom, to help make them more familiar with the high school’s robotics program.

The high school’s robotics students will be studying programming next, so that they can design

and create new robots that can drive autonomously for a forthcoming new modified game.

“This year’s robotics classes really pushed the envelope and made excellent competition robots,” Connell said.

“I’ve never seen top performances like this before and I’m looking forward to seeing what they will come up with next.”

“As a person who has a very serious interest in a career in robotic engineering, I feel like this class has provided me with a good start on that path,” said high schooler Kaitlyn McCall.

“Competing against my peers and having my robot perform at such a high level was an amazing experience.”

Brentwood High School Hosts Virtual Career Panel for Black History Month John Callan, Principal of Brentwood High School.

The virtual career panel was hosted by Nubians United, a BHS student club that focuses on celebrating, educating and promoting Black history and culture.

More often than not, many people carry the impression that the only people of color that are highlighted in society are those involved in the sports or entertainment industries.

Nubian’s United had students nominate family and community members to discuss their personal experiences as people of color in the workforce.

The panel shed a light on lesser-known leaders in the Black community of Brentwood and served as an inspiration to BHS students that they can achieve success similar to those on the panel who have the same skin color.

“I’m really thankful to have these esteemed guests share their experiences.

I’m hopeful that our students took notes and paid attention to the life and career lessons that were shared because it will be beneficial throughout their career paths,” said Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education.

“Our students can do anything that they put their minds to if they showcase their skills, and remain humble, ambitious and resilient. Our panelists are a living inspiration to our young people, and we look forward to a time when we can welcome each panelist back, in-person, to walk through our halls.”

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time.

Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

The panel, hosted via Zoom, featured Kasha Stewart, Head of Product at The Walt Disney Company; Margaret Amao, Functional Analyst at CGI Federal; Nyreedawson Simpson-Emeli, attorney and owner of Emeli Business Consulting, LLC; Manisa Montour, owner of Nissafit; and Antoinette Seals, Highway Construction Inspector and accomplished entrepreneur.

With the consolidation of cohorts and the return to full-time in-person instruction, East Islip High School students arrived back at school on Feb. 3 to see the school’s new Senior Hallway decorated with their All About Me posters, a senior banner filled with signatures, and numerous “welcome back” messages from the staff.

The Class of 2021 hosted a socially distanced fundraiser on Feb. 4 in hopes of adding some

personal flair to the Senior Hallway. At the event, each senior was provided with a ceiling tile that they were able to paint and decorate to commemorate their time as a student in East Islip. The students were able to paint together in the cafeteria, listening to music while sharing memories and laughs.

The personalized ceiling tiles were then placed in the ceiling of the Senior Hallway.

Knights of Columbus Donation to Keep Islip Clean The Knights of Columbus 6062 Columbian Club recently gave a $2,600 donation to Keep Islip Clean in support of programs designed to reduce litter,

increase recycling rates, beautify communities and educate youth about the importance of a clean, green environment. “The donation comes at a great time, as we look towards

numerous springtime events. We’re very grateful for the support,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran.

EAST ISLIP WRESTLERS EARN LEAGUE TITLE - East Islip High School’s wrestling team clinched the League V title on Feb. 23 with a 46-12 victory over Kings Park. Freshman star Sebastian Regis earned the title belt for defeating his opponent with a 2:18 pin. Two days later, East Islip beat Half Hollow Hills West by a 53-12 score.
