The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only.

Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone.

Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only.

School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social

Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts.

WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only.

Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only.

Parenting Programs: Various programs are offered to assist parents/guardians in raising children. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only.

YES CCC provides a financial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork.

Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island.

Available to students in both Suffolk County and Nassau County.

Two members of East Islip High School’s winter track team are heading to the New York State Track

Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized America’s Boating Club of the Great South Bay’s Outgoing Commander John P. Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, a member since 2010, at the Annual Change of Watch Ceremony at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, East Islip. A unit of The United States Power Squadrons, promoting safe boating through education, John P. Pergola has been very active in many phases of Squadron work. He completed Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting and Engine Maintenance in 2011. In June, 2013, he received the Educational Proficiency Award and went on to complete his Officer Training in 2014. In addition, he served as Co-op Charting Chairman from 2014-2016 and has been a member of the Executive Committee for the past three years. He also served on numerous committees during his tenure, receiving the Skipper and Pilot Awards and serving as Tent Captain and a member of the Nominating Committee.

Four of East Islip High School’s varsity wrestlers placed in the Suffolk County tournament, held Feb. 13 at Bay Shore High School, and the Redmen placed sixth overall as a team.

Undefeated sophomore Sebastian Regis (23-0)

captured first place overall in the 285-pound class, becoming East Islip’s first county champion wrestler since Jesse Dellavecchia in 2015. Regis dominated the event, pinning all four opponents including No. 1 seed John Feramola from Connetquot High School

Taught by the non-profit’s Program Director, Tugboat Manny, all participants will learn the fine art of stand-up comedy and be able to take part in a showcase (more Yoga: information to come).

Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School student Ibrahim Shrivardhankar was selected as Student of the Month for the month of February by the New York State Art Teachers Association of Nassau and Suffolk counties. His

artwork is now exhibited at the Darcy Center for the Arts, located at the Firefly Artists Gallery in Northport, New York.

The Student of the Month is an artist who exemplifies outstanding artwork and commitment to the arts, as

seen in Shrivardhankar’s rendition of a dragon eye using crayon and Sharpie.

The artwork was created last school year during the study of color theory in Melissa Trocchio-Cohen’s class.

Liam Godbout Named HOBY Winner

East Islip High School sophomore Liam Godbout has been named the winner of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award, honoring exceptional leadership and community service. He will represent East Islip at this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar conference, to be held in June.

HOBY is an annual leadership seminar open to sophomore students across America, providing more than 12,000 students the opportunity to engage in leadership development activities and seminars around the country.

As in previous years, the cost for East Islip’s winning student to attend the seminar will be covered

by a donation from the Lions Club of the Islips, whose representatives Randy Nissan and Eugene Petraitis visited the school to present Godbout with a check and their congratulations.

“We thank the Lions Club for their generosity, and congratulate Liam on a job well done,” counselor Jennifer Salvaggio said.

East Islip High School photography students Daniel Droz and Kelly Waldron, both juniors, were chosen to have their work displayed at the Colors of Long Island exhibition at the Long Island Museum. Due to the pandemic, there will be no reception this year, but the show will be on public view at the museum from March 3 through April 3.

“It is such an honor to have artwork shown in a well-known museum

on Long Island,” teacher Heather Toomey said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity and so proud of Kelly and Daniel for their strong photographic works.

Daniel took Photography 1 last year and has demonstrated continued interest and talent in the photographic arts. This is Kelly’s first year in photography and she has been excelling on photography projects since the first week of school.

They are both deserving to

have this honor of having their work exhibited in such a wonderful, professional space.”

Music Courses Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.

The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia.

Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least

one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health.

Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry.

•Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases.

• Protect your computer when online shopping:

Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly.

Consider technology to protect against potential viruses.

• Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves.

•Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address— can be used to steal identity.

•Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess.

• Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs,

shopping carts and your car.

• Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera).

• Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home.

• Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves.

The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.
