he Islip School District’s SEPTA organization celebrated its ongoing work on behalf of the district’s special education program with a successful Sweatheart Dance. The annual community event, held on February 12th at the middle school, featured a magic show, photo booth, raffles, dancing and games with a DJ, and face painting and crafts with Islip High School student volunteers. A great time was had by all in attendance.

Charity Co-Founder and Chairman Jamie Austin presented the donation checks to board members of Long Island Community Chest, $60,000; the National Foundation for Human Potential, $20,000; Genesis School, $20,000; ROHHAD Fight Inc., $63,356 and Captain Kathy Mazza/Lodge 2163A, $2,210. The funds were raised in 2015 by the Long Island Fight for Charity through its year-long series of events, particularly its 12th Main Event in November when over 20 businesspeople donned boxing gloves and met each other in the boxing ring at the HiltonLong Island. Fight for Charity’s Main Event drew a record crowd of over 1,000 fans, alumni boxers and representatives of corporate and restaurant sponsors and committee members and volunteers to make it one of the organization’s most successful fund raisers since 2003. To date, over 275 men and women have earned the title of LI-FFC Alumni Boxer. “The presentation of donation checks to the five Long Island charities is a culmination of the commitment and effort put forth by our 2015 volunteer boxers and all the people involved in making the LIFFC mission succeed. Our 12th Main Event was exciting and successful due to the kindness of the sponsors and the many volunteers who participated, especially our boxers. I hope these selfless individuals will serve as an example to other businesspeople as we call for volunteers for the 2016 line-up of boxers,” said Jamie Austin, Chair of LIFFC and Director of Online Business Solutions at Protravel International. Fight for Charity Boxers are business professionals who believe in “giving back” to the community in a meaningful way. Each ranger is required to reside within the ranger district in which she/he is assigned but emergencies and special events will require them to work anywhere and at any time. Quite often, rangers are asked to assist other agencies with complex emergency or law enforcement incidents that have occurred in or near a forested area. Since New York has 18.6 million acres of forested lands, rangers are busy year-round accomplishing their unique mission. Ranger Nally has served with distinction in DEC’s Division of Forest Protection since graduating from DEC’s 19th Law Enforcement Training Academy in 2013 where he was assigned to patrol the eastern Towns of Suffolk County. Ranger Nally’s patrol responsibilities include protection of natural resources from wildfire and enforcement against illegal ATV activities and off road vehicle use, illegal dumping activities and enforcement of hunting regulations. During his tenure as a Forest Ranger, Ranger Nally has been deployed on a western wildland firefighting incident in Washington state, assisted with the management of the New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy and devoted over two months of time to southern pine beetle eradication efforts at the DEC-managed Henrys Hollow in Hampton Bays. Ranger Nally, along with other regionally based Forest Rangers and Environmental Conservation Officers, also provided logistical and transportation support to other emergency response agencies during this winter’s storm Jonas and last winter’s storm Juno. Ranger Nally spends his spare time with his family in the Town of Riverhead.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Ranger David Nally was named “2015 Environmental Enforcement Officer of the Year” by the Pine Barrens Law Enforcement Council (PBLEC). Each year the membership of the PBLEC gets to select individuals who they feel deserve to be recognized for their work within the Central Pine Barrens. PBLEC consists of more than 26 law enforcement organizations in Suffolk County. Forest Ranger Nally was given this award in part for his participation in over 12 joint Pine Barrens Law Enforcement Council coordinated All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) enforcement patrols. “Stopping illegal ATV riding on state properties continues to be a major focus for DEC and the Pine Barrens Law Enforcement Council,” said DEC Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos. “These enforcement actions by Ranger Nally and all the other members of the PBLEC
show how DEC Forest Rangers and all other members of the PBLEC are constantly on the watch for these activities. Pine Barrens law enforcement personnel will continue to ensure speeding vehicles and ATVs do not destroy state properties or take away enjoyment of these properties from hikers, runners, bird watchers, dog walkers and other recreationalists.” John Pavacic, Executive Director of the Central Pine Barrens Commission said, “I commend Ranger Nally for his accomplishments, dedication and commitment to the protection of the Central Pine Barrens. The efforts of law enforcement officers like Ranger Nally have helped ensure that this important region will continue to exist for future generations and we are truly grateful for the service he and his fellow law enforcement officers continue to provide each and every day.” The Pine Barrens Law Enforcement Council (LEC), under the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, was established in March of 1994 to develop and implement a comprehensive law enforcement plan to patrol and protect the 105,000 acres of pine barrens in central Suffolk County. This Council has grown to include over 26 law enforcement and emergency response agencies (including federal, state, county, town, and village agencies), all of which have some degree of law enforcement authority and/or public safety function within their geographical area of responsibility covering all or portions of the Central Pine Barrens. Each day and regardless of weather, forest rangers patrol 5.0 million acres of Department-administered public lands and easements by vehicle, boat, ATV, snowmobile, aircraft, bicycle, foot, skis or snowshoes.

The organizers of the Long Island Fight for Charity have launched its Annual “Call for Boxers.” Long Island Fight for Charity, one of the nation’s most unique charity fund raising and networking organizations, will hold its 13th Main Event in November. The Main Event will feature 10 or more bouts between Long Island business professionals who volunteer as boxers in
support of charities serving Long Islanders. To date, over 275 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer. Boxing applications are being accepted now for boxers to enter training and participate in a limited number of Main Event bouts. Men and women interested in becoming a volunteer boxer need to complete an application; obtain medical clearance;
make a commitment to train (gym locations to be announced); attend LIFFC events and raise funds for local charities. Boxing experience isn’t necessary. Culinary Creativity Three “Chef’s Choice” classes at Islip High School, guided by family and consumer sciences teacher Heidi Kissinger, recently participated in the school’s second annual “Chopped” competition. Students prepared different dishes to display their culinary skills and creativity, which were then
served to volunteer faculty judges. The first-period winners, for their dish of fried chicken and waffles with homemade maple gravy, were Emily Berger, Maddy Edwards, Nicole Saggio and Melissa Schulman. Third-period winners Julia De Santis, Kim Donahue, Kassidy Mullins
and Gianna Pugliese gained victory with a dish of chicken fajitas with avocado fries. In the eighth-period contest, Josh Fix and Dakota Shay emerged victorious after preparing taco pizza with homemade corn salsa.
Earning Medals Islip High School’s three Science Olympiad teams participated in the annual Eastern Long Island Regional competition on January 30th, earning a total of 27 medals for their top 10 finishes in several individual events. The event, held at Brentwood High School, featured 47 teams from 24 different Suffolk County high schools, vying for the opportunity to advance to the New York State
competition in March at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Islip’s A team earned 18 medals and an overall second-place finish overall, solidifying the team’s spot for the state competition. The B and C teams finished in a tie for 10th place overall in the region. Among the first-place finishers were James O’Halloran and Brendan Mercado in the Astronomy category, Morgiana McDevitt and Matt
Southard in Forensics, Sean Dineen and Wendy Tully-Gustafson in It’s About Time, and Dineen and Brian Lithen in Remote Sensing. “Such a showing was the strongest ever for Islip for all three teams,” said Matthew Christiansen, the high school’s science/ business chairperson. “Our congratulations go out to all of the students on their continued hard work.”

Track Trio Succeeds Three members of East Islip High School’s girls varsity winter track and field team – Amanda Engrassia, Jackie Ginty and Katie Ginty – successfully competed at the Section XI state qualifying meet on February 8th. The event, featuring the top student-athletes from across Suffolk County,
Students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park had a great time celebrating their 100th Day of School this month, combining learning, laughter, brain power and physical activity. Each second grader created a poster project using one hundred items of his or her choice. Creations of every kind were presented, including 100 gumballs in a gumball machine, 100 goldfish
in a fish bowl and 100 pom-poms on a cupcake representing sprinkles. Students also enjoyed a classroom hunt for one hundred Hershey’s Kisses. Each chocolate was numbered, so once a student found a kiss, he or she placed it on the 100Day chart. Once all of the treats were placed, it was time for the math fun to begin! Students used division to distribute the chocolates

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have
been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow
days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

Legislative Discussion East Islip Middle School’s student government met with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi on January 22nd, discussing such topics as parliamentary procedures,
“Robert’s Rules of Order” and how to properly organize meetings. “The students learned many facts about local government and the county legislature
during his visit, and they look forward to having Legislator Cilmi attend one of their meetings in the spring,” said teacher Dawn Ann Zeffiro.
Sweatin’ with SEPTA The Islip School District’s SEPTA organization celebrated its ongoing work on behalf of the district’s special education program with a successful Sweatheart Dance. The annual community
event, held on February 12th at the middle school, featured a magic show, photo booth, raffles, dancing and games with a DJ, and face painting and crafts with Islip High School student volunteers. “A little snow could
not stop the Sweat Heart Dance from being a hit,” said SEPTA President Tina Smith. “With all our raffles, it seemed that almost everyone went home a winner.”

Lacking in Losses The East Islip Middle School girls volleyball team finished their 2015-2016 season undefeated. This is the second consecutive year that the team has finished without a loss, winning matches against neighboring teams such as Connetquot, Sayville and Bayport-Blue Point. “The girls that played last year came back strong and set the tone for the
first-time players this year,” said coach Laura O’Donnell. “Each of the girls brought their talent and determination to every competition. They worked hard from the first practice to the final match, earning every win. I think the secret of their success was a well-balanced season of hard work and fun” Nikki LaFrancesca, a second-year player, said,
“Being undefeated once was great, but being undefeated two times in a row is unbelievable.” First-year player Samantha Winegard added, “As a team we practiced together, we improved together, we chanted together, we won together, we were undefeated together. We are East Islip volleyball!”

Music and Arts Program Support group, also known as eiMAPS. Music teacher Chris Neske assisted in coordinating the volunteers’ efforts at the January 30th event, held at the district’s middle school. The needed garbage bags and zip ties for the project were donated by Home Depot.
All proceeds from the drive will be used for programs and scholarships for East Islip School District music and art students. “Thanks to the support of the community, the clothing drive was a huge success,” said eiMAPS representative Linda Hillman.

The Suffolk County volunteer committee attended The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference from Friday, February 5th through Sunday, February 7th at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Over the course of three days, volunteers participated in interactive workshops with The Fresh Air Fund’s fulltime staff and community agency partners. The volunteers learned to how support their Friendly Towns communities, received data management training, communicated with New York City agency partners that register the program’s children, and attended various training sessions such as public relations and social media. Former Fresh Air child Darryl Rattray, the Associate Commissioner for Community Centers and Strategic Partnerships at the Department of Youth and Community
Development in New York City, gave the keynote speech. Darryl shared with the 250 volunteers in attendance how The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program greatly impacted his life. The closing ceremony included a celebration of long-time volunteer leader and host parent Patty LeRoy for her 50 years of dedicated volunteerism to The Fresh Air Fund. Patty was reunited with her former Fresh Air child Donnalese as well as her current Fresh Air child Krystie. “What an inspirational weekend at The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference! Meeting the Fresh Air staff, hearing many amazing stories from former and current participants, learning how to grow the program and re-energizing us to kick off the new season! Only five months till the first buses arrive!” said Eva Lennon, a volunteer from
Harleysville, PA. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are seven to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. living at home. This may include services such as: medical equipment, nursing support, therapies, medications and making their homes handicapped accessible. Angela’s House also has three beautiful specialty homes that have the ability to offer children, with often very severe medical needs, the therapeutic, nursing and potential long-term care required. Crisis Counselor Training Everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc. was born. RESPONSE of Suffolk County is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. RESPONSE is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line. Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd, and continues on Saturday, April 9th and Sunday April 10th. Sessions will run
from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place in the Stony Brook area. No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required. Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 20,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over 5,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who are homebound or
have limited social support due to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, roleplaying exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially needed. Make a difference in our community – one phone call at a time.
