Creating Healing Mandalas In The Circle Of Life
Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum is excited to host our first-ever inperson grief healing art workshop on Saturday, March 4th with Deborah Adler, MA, ATR-BC, LCAT Registered, Board Certified and Licensed Art Therapist
Session 1: 5pm - 6:15pm Session 2: 7pm - 8:15pm!
Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “Circle.” Mandala-making is a common Art Therapy method often used for insight, healing and selfexpression. It is another way to practice mindfulness. Circles often symbolize the connectedness we have with all people,
including our lost loved ones. Licensed Art Psychotherapist, Deborah Adler, will lead you into creating your very own mandala allowing you to explore your feelings whether they reflect grief, sadness, inspiration or hope. No artistic skill or experience is required. Get creative, allow your mind to wander and enjoy the process while you design your art piece with colors, images and symbols that inspire you to reflect on your loved one. There will be dedicated time following the art experience to share mandalas and process any
feelings and emotions that came up for you.
Pinelawn’s Reception Office at 2030 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, NY 11735
Registration:
The event is limitedthis to 25 registered guests per session.
Please ONLY REGISTER if you will be able to physically attend this inperson event as we want to ensure as many Pinelawn families can attend as possible.
For questions, contact Kristyn Hovanec, Director of Community Outreach, at khovanec@pinelawn. com or 631.249.6100 x115.
Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.
Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.
Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.
Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.
Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.
Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.
Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When
the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.
The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.
During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.
To learn more about this organization, please visit www.canine.org or call 631.561.0200.
Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about their Long Island location, located in Medford, NY and find out how you can get involved!

Young East Islip Engineers Qualify At FIRST Lego League Challenge
Two terrific teams of young robotics engineers from East Islip competed in the FIRST Lego League Challenge, held over four days in January and February at Mineola High School. One team, dubbed the Lego Girls, consisted of the trio of John F. Kennedy Elementary School fourth graders Jayne Elliott, Sonali Kamath and Antonia Rezza. Another five-person team included East Islip Middle School students Sachin Kamath, Mason Latino and Nicholas Selvaggio along with two students from other schools, Luke Bruzzo and Chris Sullivan.
The East Islip teams were two of approximately 100 teams competing in this qualifying round. The competition consisted mainly of middle school teams and some elementary teams from across Long Island in the 9-14 age range, and entails showcasing proficiency in four topic areas, each given 25 percent weight.
In Robot Performance, a robot built using Lego Technic pieces must be
built and programmed for autonomous operation to complete a set of missions that have various point values, with the highest score winning. For Innovation Project, each team must research and present on a yearly challenge statement, defining the problem, finding a solution, prototyping the solution, sharing the solutions with experts in the industry and making improvements based on industry feedback. This year’s theme was energy distribution, storage, production and usage. Robot Design challenged the students to showcase their knowledge in building a robot, attachments, sensors, block coding, documentation and a detailed understanding of mission strategy for the robot. Finally, in Core Values, each team is challenged to share how they’ve exhibited the competition’s core values throughout the season.
The JFK rookie team of Lego Girls took home first place for the Robot
Performance as well as their Core Values presentation at the Jan. 21 qualifier. After a few years of competing and not qualifying, East Islip’s middle school team also won first place for Robot Performance and their Core Values presentation at the Jan. 22 qualifier. Both teams displayed their knowledge, growth and experience in coding, robot design, creativity and character throughout the many categories that they were judged in, and were presented with awards and congratulated by the judges and competing teams. They will both move on to compete in the FIRST Long Island championship on March 5.
“The level of accomplishment and pride these young engineers felt was tremendous,” STEAM teacher Amy Elliott said. “They truly demonstrated that with teamwork and dedication, you can do whatever you put your mind to.”

Friends Of America’s Vet DogsChinese Auction Fundraiser
A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought
great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.
Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their
primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. To support their mission or for information regarding the Chinese Auction event, contact group co-founders Cliff Miller or Patricia Summers at (631) 5679493 or write to Friends of America’s Vet Dogs, Attention Cliff Miller, PO Box 18, Bohemia, NY 11716-0018. Any checks should be made payable to “America’s Vet Dogs”, which is a 501c3 non-profit corporation.

East Islip BOE Bids Emotional Farewell To Retiring Superintendent
At the board of education’s Jan. 12 meeting, the East Islip School District bid an emotional farewell to Superintendent John Dolan, who retired Feb. 3. Since taking over the reins in 2015, Dolan has overseen a renaissance of stability and growth in the district’s schools and staff, and his heartfelt manner and accomplished legacy will not be easily forgotten by a grateful school community.
“John was just perfect for East Islip,” board of education President Christopher Zachry said. “When I think back to where we were when John took over, from the team down to the academic programs to what this place looks like, compared to eight years ago it’s just a totally different place. He always gives credit to the board and his team, but really John deserves a lot of the credit for this.”
Zachry saved particular praise for Dolan’s stalwart leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, his assembling of a strong central administration team and his selfless volunteerism for the community. Calling him “East Islip’s adopted son,” Zachry presented Dolan with an honorary diploma and announced that the Early Childhood Center, where this and many other board meetings are held, will be renamed the John V. Dolan District Office Building in his honor.
“The work you’ve done here has not
only impacted the staff and children that are here now, but for generations to come,” Zachry said.
“This has been the most incredible eight years of my career,” Dolan said. “From the bottom of my heart, I got a lot more out of East Islip than I gave to you. Thank you for letting me serve.
I look forward to the next chapter here in East Islip. This is a great town with a great school district, and it’s only going to get better.”
Replacing Dolan will be current Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel Paul Manzo, who had been named interim superintendent, effective Feb. 1., at the Nov. 17 board meeting. Manzo came to East Islip in 2016 after 14 years with the Sachem Central School District.
Executive Director of Special Education/ Pupil Personnel Services K-12 and CPSE Dr. Aileen O’Rourke was named interim assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel, effective Feb. 1. Prior to taking the executive
director’s position in 2016, O’Rourke had served as principal of John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. Julie DeCollibus, previously an administrator in the Sachem Central School District, was named East Islip’s interim director of special education, effective Feb. 6. The board also recognized East Islip High School’s SADD club members Julianna Azzizzo, Jalya Capers, Samantha Federico, Stephen Foray, Anna Franchi, Rachel Furey, Florence Gonzalez, Samantha Penny, Sophia Penny, Kayla Timmer and Giana Trager, and the Red Ribbon Week slogan contest winners Cecilia Francis (John F. Kennedy Intermediate School) and Ava Rizzo (Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School).
Lastly, the high school’s CORE work-based learning program was honored, with the Community Chamber of Commerce, Chamber President Gary Teich and award-winning CORE student Christopher Urraro given praise.

JOHN DOLAN
East Islip’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade Ready To Roll This Sunday, March 5th
The 58th Annual John P. Reilly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held in East Islip on Sunday, March 5, 2023. The parade commences at 2:00 pm
starting at the East Islip Public Library and ends on Irish Lane. This year’s parade will feature over ten pipe bands, floats, high school marching bands, local fire
departments, and an array of members from local community organizations.
The Local Hibernians Inc. is happy to announce that this year’s Grand Marshal will be past AOH Division President, Tom McHugh, and the Ladies Aide is current LAOH President Patty Fitzpatrick. Tom’s aides will be his three sons, Thomas, Paul, and Terrence McHugh, and fellow Hibernian Greg Baist, a retired NYPD police officer. Tom and his aides will lead the renowned Rosin Dubh Pipe Band when they head down Main Street.
Tom is a 1980 East Islip graduate and a long-time East Islip resident. Tom has been a member of Division 7 AOH for over 20 years. Along with his wife Carol, the family has gone above and beyond participating in various AOH division 7 events and helped coordinate the running of the division for over 20 years. AOH/LAOH Division
7, Our Lady of Knock is one of the largest divisions in the country with over 700 members.
The lady’s honoree, Patty Fitzpatrick, a 1978 East Islip graduate resides in Oakdale. Patty has been a dedicated member of the LAOH for many years. She
has organized and spearheaded many events and has provided leadership for the ladies’ division. This is a very proud moment for Patty as her Dad, Patrick Fitzpatrick, started Division 7 and was the first president in 1963 with a membership of 18 men.
The parade is rain or shine. The parade organizers are hoping for a great turnout to kick off the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and Irish heritage during the month of March.
