Don’t Pack This Pest Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines— and get an official certificate of inspection.

What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods—lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses.

• Use a putty knife, stiff

brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun.

To get the certificate, you can perform a self-inspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.

(NAPSI)—When buying a used car, it’s important to look for problems that aren’t readily apparent. You might think of damage or fraud, but this includes any financial issues as well.

What To Watch For For starters, make sure any unpaid liens have been resolved before buying the car. A lien is “a legal right to the vehicle by a third party to ensure the repayment of a debt or other financial

According to researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank, about 6 million Americans are at least 90 days late on their payments.

If you buy a vehicle with a lien on its title, you become legally obligated to pay off the debts. The lien can also prevent you from registering the car until the lien is paid off.

What To Do One way to protect yourself is with a Carfax Report. It contains a wide variety of information reported on vehicles, such as title information, accident history, odometer readings, recalls, as well as financial issues, such as liens against the car.

The Joy Animals Bring Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity.

Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog.

I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of.

I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my

lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie.

Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave?

Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior.

In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story.

As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and

running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face.

Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can.

I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him.

These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness.

Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recognized 7 Islip residents during February’s Town Board meeting, as part of Islip Town’s 2019 Black History Celebration. Among the honorees were Edward Groce, a 16 year veteran of the SCPD; Anthony Ayhoung, President of the Suffolk County Caribbean Cultural Association; Judy and Norman Daniels, Brentwood High School Coaches; Paula Moore, Vice President of the Brentwood Board of Education; Rohan Murphy, a double amputee

and three-time All-League Wrestler and professional Motivational Speaker, and Marian Reid, Deputy Director of the Long Island Housing Services.

Nominated by their peers, each of the 7 honorees have devoted themselves and their time toward improving the quality of life for all Town of Islip residents, representing some of the most dedicated and civicminded individuals our Town has the honor to be home to. Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board presented

the honorees with specially engraved tokens of gratitude for the many years of service they’ve devoted to our community.

“The recipients of this year’s Black History Celebration are remarkable individuals who are truly deserving of this honor. They are leaders, role models and friends, who have given selflessly to improve the quality of life of their fellow residents, and for that we are especially grateful,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

Woodworking Skills on Display Islip High School senior Tyler Nakken, an independent study student working for the second consecutive year with technology teacher Jesse Eilbeck, recently completed several outstanding woodworking projects, including a segmented bowl made from black walnut and poplar wood that he buffed to a high shine using food-safe finish, and a traditional tea candle stand with a red oak base and tiers constructed from sapele mahogany and black walnut.

“Tyler is a focused youth in my shop classes, always striving to produce quality work,” said Eilbeck.

Nakken plans to join the military after graduation this June.

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each V e t e r a n can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission.

Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.

This organization relies heavily on devoted volunteers to continue providing their services. With such a small staff, Paws of War depends on the generosity of volunteers to support their fundraising efforts, to provide support to veterans and to help out with their dogs.

Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich

This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!

Drain and pour into a bowl. Set aside.

"You still get that flavor and texture you would with a regular Reuben, but you can enjoy it with less guilt because this version is packed with veggies," shares Patrick.

Rinse and dry pan and then add nondairy butter to coat pan. Place two slices of rye bread in pan, cover each slice with two slices of swiss cheese each, cover on medium heat and grill until cheese is melted.

What You Will Need

1 Pack of Portabello Mushrooms 1 Red Onion 1 Box/Bag of Baby Spinach Leaves Non-dairy Butter Substitute Swiss Cheese Small Bag of Sauerkraut (drained) Seedless Jewish-style Rye Bread Marie's Thousand Island Dressing Large Frying Pan/Skillet

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.

Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation T he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.

Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings.

While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.

However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present.

This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research

Foundation and author of the “Zone Diet,” and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the AntiInflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time.

As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate.

Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before

making any significant dietary changes.

any people periodically have bad days when they just seem to be in a bad mood. When a bad mood isn’t short-lived, this might be a potential indicator of depression.

Depression is a common mental disorder that, according to the World Health Organization, affects more than 300 million people across the globe. What are the symptoms of depression?

The Mayo Clinic notes that one in 10 people whose depression goes untreated commit suicide. That only highlights the importance of recognizing the symptoms of depression and acting once any have been identified or suspected. The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening.

However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila Kheirandish-Gozal, director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function.

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.

HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories.

A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.

In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.

HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.

During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop

her baby weight.

People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising.

HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-

el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. Once you are medically in the clear, consult with a qualified trainer at your local gym to find the best routine for you.

Eat healthy fats. When eating, choose polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. Trans fats increase one’s risk of developing heart disease by clogging arteries and raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Instead, you want to up your HDL (good) cholesterol with food like: olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds and some fatty fish like salmon or sardines. Read food labels before buying anything at the store.

Keep your mouth clean. Studies show that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can travel to the bloodstream and cause an elevation in your C-reactive protein, a marker for blood vessel inflammation. Brush and floss twice daily, and be sure to schedule routine checkups with your dentist at least two times per year.

Get adequate shut-eye. Ensuring adequate sleep can improve your heart health. One study found that young and middle-age adults who regularly slept seven hours per night had less calcium in their arteries (a sign of early heart disease), compared to those who slept five hours or less, or those who slept nine hours or more. Your heart craves a level of homeostasis to stay healthy.

Adopt healthy eating habits. Changes to your diet, including eating more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, can help you lose and maintain a healthy body weight, improve your cholesterol levels and reduce blood your pressure — leading to a healthier heart.

Embrace physical activity. Regular, moderate exercise is great for the heart. It can occur at the gym, playing with the kids outdoors, taking the dog on long walks or hikes, or even taking the stairs at work.

Any way you slice it, your heart craves a minimum of 20-30 minutes of physical activity per day.

A healthy heart begins with daily habits that promote long-term heart health, and the sooner you begin a heart healthy lifestyle, the greater your chances of staving off heart disease.

East Islip High School’s boys and girls varsity bowling teams were both named 2019 Suffolk County champions, winning at the Section XI Championship tournament held on

February 2nd at Bowlero Lanes in Sayville.

The boys team, led by Aaron Rice and Joseph Zagari, finished with a perfect 14-0 season and won the county title for the

third year in a row. The girls team likewise ended with an impeccable 10-0 record, with Julia Bocamazo and Julianna Spina earning second and third place in Long Island girls bowling

average, respectively, for the regular season.

Both teams will move on to compete in the state bowling championships in Syracuse on the weekend of March 8-10.
