Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think? Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt

and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere. Like I said, is it spring yet? So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?

Awesome, sign me up! Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel! Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes. Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week. Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

The 4th Annual East Islip SEPTA Snowflake fundraiser was held on January 31st at the local Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall on Champlin Avenue in East Islip. Featuring food preparation and service by high school and middle school students in the district’s Family and Consumer Science Club, it served to highlight the organization’s work on

behalf of special education in East Islip. “My thanks to all those who came out in support of our Snowflake event,” said SEPTA President Susan Kavanagh. “Our ongoing success is a direct effect of the phenomenal support that comes from our community, friends and many of our district’s administrators, teachers and staff.” Kavanagh explained that the funds generated by the

9

SEPTA Snowflakes festive event were sufficient to generate grant money for the first time. “We had a very nice turnout of applicants and are excited to be awarding grants to many of our wonderful special education teachers and staff this year, totaling more than $9,000,” she said. Lane of Greenlawn, both of whom have been received the honor of being selected to the NYSSMA All State Choir. As the singers exited, the dancers took their place and performed, Dare You To Move by the Vitamin String Quartet. This was a contemporary piece choreographed by students Natalie and Samantha Affenita, both of Bayport. The group’s directors, Mr. Jared Berry (Bel Canto Chorale) and Mrs. Renee Sussman (Dance Company) are very proud of their students and look forward to collaborating again for future events. “Opportunities such as this one continue my mission to give the students unique and professional performing experiences. Not many high school students can say they have performed at Carnegie Hall. I am so proud to be their director and look forward to our future performances.” stated Dance Company Director, Renee Susmann.

On Saturday, January 18th, Performing Arts students from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School performed at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s most famous performance venues. The World Voices In Motion was a dual choral and dance performance sponsored by the Performing Arts Educators, an organization that produces student performances in world class venues. Both SJB’s Bel Canto Chorale and Dance Company performed at this stellar event. The show opened with the seniors from Bel Canto Chorale singing the Star Spangled Banner later followed by a performance by the entire Bel Canto Chorale and finally the SJB Dance Company. The Chorale performed three pieces including Word Was God by Rosephanye Powell; Bring Me Little Water, Silvy arranged by Moira Smiley and Ave Maria by Franz Biebl. Cultivating Kindness By: Janice Calandrino, Levittown Living by the golden rule; Do unto others as you would have done to you. Accepting that we cannot change everyone, but we can change ourselves. Identifying our pet peeves and learn how to stop feeding into them. Making that extra effort to “put ourselves out there” without losing ourselves. Talking about our feelings, good and bad, without putting the responsibility of them on others.

No Room For Animosity

“Covered Bridge” Photo by: Nancy E. Hassel

By: Sanford H. Weinberg, Plainview Fill your day with warmth and joy; Greet all you meet with a smile and a chuckle, And there will be little or no breadth for greed or sadness. Engage your heart and soul with love and happiness; It will surely be met with similitude from those persons with whom you gather, And there will be little expanse for complaints or grudges. Enliven your spirit with wonderful interests and activities; Think positive thoughts, be optimistic in your views, Share a kind word with a friend or colleague; Present a firm grip and strong handshake, And there will be little measure for misery and enmity. Complete your surroundings with an aura of thankfulness and serenity; An embrace, a hug, or perchance a welcome kiss will do, And be well assured there will never be room for animosity.

Many hazards come with winter driving, but the possibility of being stranded may be one of the worst. If you get stranded while driving, here are some tips geared at helping you survive: Plan Your Route: Don’t use back roads to avoid traffic or save time. Take heavily traveled routes where more people can spot you. Also, main roads are the first areas that rescue workers will reach in emergencies. If you must drive, travel during the day and don’t travel alone. Tell family or friends where you are

going, the route you will take and when you expect to arrive. Stay With Your Vehicle: While it will get cold, your vehicle is your best protection against wind and exposure. Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Abandon your car only as a last resort. A single person walking through the snow is much harder to find than a stranded vehicle. Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is winterized and in good driving condition. Keep your gas tank full. This

arms, hands, legs, feet and toes to improve circulation and keep warm. Important: Don’t exercise enough to get hot or sweaty. Wet clothes lose insulation value, making you susceptible to hypothermia. Also, avoid use of cigarettes or alcohol as these will reduce your ability to stay warm. Stay Hydrated: The keys to winter survival are to stay dry, hydrated and warm. Drink fluids sparingly over time to avoid dehydration. Don’t put snow in your mouth as a source of liquid, always melt it first. “Eating” snow will lower your body temperature, increasing your risk of hypothermia. Make Your Vehicle Easy To Find: Tie a piece of brightly colored cloth or plastic to your antenna or hang it out of a window. When running the engine at night, turn on interior lights if you hear rescuers nearby. Rescuers can see a small glow at a

considerable distance. To reduce battery drain, use emergency flashers only if you hear approaching vehicles. If the snow has stopped falling, open the hood of the car as a distress signal. Keep the roof of your car free of snow so it’s visible from the air. Communicate: Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged. Call 911 and describe your location

as precisely as possible. Keep calls brief to save your battery. Sending text messages for help has the best chance of getting through while minimizing battery loss. Don’t Expect To Be Comfortable: The goal is to endure until you’re found. Remember that the keys to survival are to remain calm and patient, and to be prepared.

will keep the fuel line from freezing and allow you to run the engine for heat for a longer time. Pack A Winter Survival Kit: The kit should contain non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, blankets, tea light candles (for warmth), waterproof matches, flares, tools or a multi-function knife, a small mirror (for signaling), brightly colored cloth/plastic (for visibility), tow chain/strap and a small pot for melting snow (to drink). Use The Heater Sparingly: Running your engine and heater for ten minutes every hour is enough to keep you warm while also conserving fuel. While the engine is running, slightly open a downwind window for fresh air. Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. There is, however, no such thing as perfection when it comes to humanity. As demonstrated by these two stars, even professionals are mortal. When we do succeed, it is essential to recognize that we may have gotten lucky. There will always be someone just a little bit faster or a few inches taller. Nothing is certain, and we must earn what comes our way. It is all part of the master plan, and sometimes things work out. There is no such thing as a guarantee. Even Gold Medalists don’t get perfect scores. With this being said, it is perfectly understandable that we may fail in our

everyday lives. There is no guarantee that practice will lead to greatness. We can still fall short of our goals. I try to implement this mindset into every facet of my persona. With college decisions steadily flowing in, I realize that I am not perfect. It would be irrational to think that I would be accepted to all of the colleges that I applied to. Rejection is an essential part of life, as losing is a key element of the Olympics. Much like the Olympians, I know that every failure occurs for a reason. Although on a much smaller scale, my futile pursuit of excellence is a model of their determination, perseverance and trial.

Book Fair Fun

There was a great deal of excitement in the library at Connetquot Elementary School when the most recent book fair came to town. Children in all grades had the opportunity to purchase books, including old favorites and current titles from the Scholastic Book Company. Best-sellers this year included Minecraft guides

and entries in the longrunning Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series, according to PTA volunteer Suki Donohue. Many parents and relatives came to assist students with their book selections, which they could read at home during the school’s Parents as Reading Partners Program from January 27th through

February 7th. “It was so fantastic to see how happy the children were about reading,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “They have learned to love books, and we all believe in the motto, ‘You Must Read to Achieve.” Photo by: East Islip School District

Islip Town Board members continued the Town’s long-standing tradition of observing National Black History Month at a recent Black History celebration held in the Islip Town Board meeting room, where board members paid special tribute to five individuals, who either live or work in Islip Town, who have made great strides in

the advancement of African Americans. The ceremony was led by Councilman Anthony J. Senft, Jr., who was joined by fellow board members in acknowledging the many achievements of each honoree. From professional musicians to dedicated educators to outstanding athletic leaders, this year’s honorees were all deserving of the prestigious

award, and were presented with a customary crystal statue to celebrate their accomplishments. Honored were: Reynard Burns for his contributions in the area of arts and education; Lisette Lors for Education; Mike Brown for Education; Judith JacksonFogah for Community Service; and Horace J. Mickle for Community Service.
