The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting.

Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers.

On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension.

There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture.

This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called.

If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right?

So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes.

It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on.

Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately.

Angel Ball Honoree The Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) announced the 28th Anniversary Angel Ball Honoree Humanitarian Award is Tara E. Conner, former Miss USA. Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate.

Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with

audiences throughout the United States. Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. She has since celebrated 8 years of sobriety.

She especially wants educators, families and professionals to know that sobriety at an early age is achievable and that it greatly enhances life’s possibilities. Miss Conner states, “It’s so important to understand that addiction is a family disease,” said Conner. “I experienced this firsthand within my own family.

But I’ve also learned that through treatment and recovery you can break the cycle.”

LICADD is working feverishly to put a stop to the increase in addiction and the tragedies that result from it. Children and families are being devastated and LICADD offers a solution with preventive education and support services to help break the cycle.

and Principal at Cold Spring Harbor Junior/ Senior High School.

Jay has spent over three decades working in our public schools as both a teacher and building leader. For the last nine years he has served as the Principal of the nationally ranked Cold Spring Harbor Junior/ Senior High School in Suffolk County. Mr. Matuk has presented at several statewide and national educational annual conventions and has facilitated workshops for Hofstra University and Queens College. Mr. Matuk is also an adjunct professor at the C.W. Post Graduate School of Education.

GUEST SPEAKER - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt recently addressed members of the Long Island Business Development Council (LIBDC) at a monthly dinner meeting held at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. Councilwoman Bergin Weichbrodt took the opportunity to emphasize the Town’s continued commitment to bringing new businesses to the area, as well as aiding existing businesses looking to expand, citing the assistance and support provided by the Islip Industrial Development Agency, that in 2014 alone, induced a record 27 new projects, which helped to create 1700 jobs, while retaining 669.

Trio Of Top Athletes Three outstanding student-athletes from Islip High School – football player Cobie Rose and soccer players Brooke Skahan and Frankie Wolf – signed National Letters of Intent on February 4th to play for colleges next fall.

Star lineman Rose will play Division I football next year for the Tigers of Towson University in Maryland.

“I’m so excited,” said Rose. “It’s a big accomplishment and my family is very happy for me.”

A three-year varsity starter for the Bucs, Rose was dominant at his position last fall, earning him All-County, All-Long Island, All-State and AllMetropolitan honors. He had verbally committed to Bryant University earlier in the year, but when Towson showed interest, he knew it was the place for him.

“I loved the whole atmosphere in Baltimore, and the great facilities,”

he said. “I’m a city type of guy.”

He hasn’t yet decided on a major but is leaning toward physical education or business.

For Rose, playing in the Suffolk Division III championship game against Sayville last Nov. 20 was the highlight of his Islip career.

“It was a big thing for our team, even though we lost,” he said.

For now, he’s just looking ahead, saying, “I’m happy to be done with the recruiting process and looking forward to starting college life.”

Skahan will join the New York Institute of Technology’s Bears squad while majoring in nursing.

Skahan, who plays defense, was named AllState in 2013 and 2014, All-County in 2012 and All-League as a freshman in 2011.

The strength of NYIT’s nursing program led her to choose the school.

Skahan enjoyed touring its Old Westbury campus and said, “I am really looking forward to playing with the team.”

Fellow Bucs defenseman Wolf, who played with her teammate on the school’s 2011 and 2012 county champions, signed with the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

“I always wanted to be away at college, and be down South,” she explained about her choice. The fact that the university’s Patriots soccer program has struggled a bit was actually a selling point for Wolf. “I didn’t want to join a legacy,” she said. “I wanted to create a legacy of my own, and help create a winning team.”

Wolf will major in political science with a dual minor in business administration and psychology. Her future plans also include law school and a career as a corporate lawyer.

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists over 600 medically fragile children on Long Island.

Angela’s House offers programs and supports to families who need care for their medically frail children. Angela’s house will coordinate services needed to safely care for these children at home.

For children who cannot be cared for at home, Angela’s House I, II and III are specially designed homes that provide a warm environment with 24-hour nursing care to accommodate the children’s Complex medical and physical needs.

The Gala celebration will be held at The Watermill in Smithtown, on March 19th. There will be a cocktail hour, a reception and a formal dinner. There will also be various items up for silent auction and raffles.

Angela’s House will be honoring Ron and Rob Brigati of White Post Farms. The past two years they have donated a summer party to the Angela’s House children, parents and siblings.

Medical staff also attends to care for the children.

This fun filled day lets the children feed the animals, go on rides and enjoy a fun filled day.

Rob said it best, “The smiles and joy that they see as a result, makes it very special.”

Pocket Patriotism The Islip High School Junior Chamber of Commerce Club recently participated in a Pocket Flag project with the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion RusyBohm Post 411 in Islip.

The initiative was organized by business teacher Renee DeCrescenzo-Clock, who also serves as the chairwoman of youth and children for the Ladies Auxiliary.

Students joined local

inception of integration and the ongoing work she does through the “Ruby Bridges Foundation” to promote the values of tolerance, respect and appreciation of differences, further deepened their understanding of all that she has come to represent.

Other activities included learning about Jackie Robinson and using Smart Boards to catch videos of his historic moments at bat. Their favorite new vocabulary word of the week was “persevere” – the idea of continuing to try at something, even when it seems the hardest, really seemed to appeal to the youngsters. They took part in an exercise writing and drawing pictures about a time they have had to persevere while learning or doing something and the surprising answers that came from the these young minds were inspiring

indeed.

Fifth graders studied the Civil Rights Movement and integral figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. They particularly focused on all of the positive themes that Dr. King stressed, promoting that peace and love will conquer all negativity and violence.

The students wrote about their own dreams for their futures…for themselves, their family, their school and the world. They also did mini-projects on what the word “peace” means to them and ways that they feel they can promote it in their own environment.

Projects, essays and artwork are on display for all students and visitors at SSCM and students came home to their families with prayers of peace for the month, something we could all use a little more of every month of the year!

Marlene Johnston, the legislative aide to Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane Jr. both visited to commend the community for coming together for this worthy cause.

“What a great opportunity this was for our community members to learn about citizenship and the U.S. flag, while developing pride in our country,” said DeCrescenzo-Clock.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Students in every grade at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park kicked off the start of the month by doing just that.

Second graders read stories on the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., then wrote up passages about how each of them can help to make the world a more peaceful place. Thoughts from these 7 and 8 year-olds included everything from not being afraid to take the first step to make a new friend to ending violence.

Learning about Ruby Bridges, the obstacles she had to overcome in childhood during the

Boy Scout Troop 370, Girl Scout Troops 1968 and 128, parents and other Ladies Auxiliary members for the project, in which a total of 300 miniature American flags were folded and packaged with a supportive patriotic message. Each of the 50 participants included a personal note with each flag, which will be sent to service members stationed overseas in active war zones.

Exploring Advocacy The entire East Islip School District community came together on the morning of February 6th to share ideas and advocacy initiatives at the second annual East Islip Advocacy Breakfast & Community Workshop, held at the district office board room in Islip Terrace.

A breakfast reception was skillfully prepared and served by students from the East Islip High School Culinary Arts & Hospitality Career Academy, who were introduced by their teacher, Patricia Emmons-Fritz.

More than a dozen performers from the cast of this year’s East Islip Middle School musical, “Once on This Island,” sang “We Dance” for the attendees, who included district administrators, directors and building principals as well as State Sen. Phil Boyle, State Assemblyman Andrew R. Garbarino, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Board President Steven Behan.

The Town of Islip recently observed National Black History Month during its annual Black History Celebration held at Islip Town Hall, where board members paid special tribute to Islip Town residents who have made significant contributions and accomplishments that have helped to improve the lives of those around them.

Honored in the category of Visual and Performing Arts was Brentwood resident Paul Little, music teacher and professional musician.

Mr. Little received his undergraduate degree from the Crane School of Music and a Master’s of Music Degree in Music Technology from Five Towns College. He

teaches music in the North Babylon and Valley Stream Central School Districts and is also a member of the West Islip Symphony Orchestra, the Northport Symphony Orchestra, the Island Symphony Orchestra, the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra, as well as a member of the board of the West Islip and Northport Symphonies.

In addition, Mr. Little has performed in pit orchestras and as technical director for many Long Island theater productions.

STAR Deadline Angie Carpenter, Suffolk County Treasurer, reminds all new property owners that the deadline to apply for your BASIC School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption is March 1st, 2015, but because the first is a Sunday, it is extended to Monday, March 2nd, 2015.

“If you previously had the exemption on a prior

residence, you must apply for this exemption with your assessor on your new property,” cautions Treasurer Carpenter.

“However, all residents who currently still reside in their same place of residence as prior years and have reapplied with the State Department of Taxation and Finance do not need to

do anything at this time,” states Carpenter.

Applications must be submitted to the town assessor where your primary residence is located. BASIC STAR is available to all New York residents whose combined total adjusted gross income does not exceed $500,000 regardless of age. This exemption may

only be applied to your primary residence.

Any senior receiving or now eligible for the ENHANCED STAR exemption must also submit their completed applications to your local assessor by March 2nd, 2015. To be eligible for the ENHANCED STAR exemption, the property

must be your primary residence, you must turn 65 in the year that the exemption will apply and have an income of $81,900 or less. If the property is jointly owned, only one resident must be 65 by the indicated time.

Deadline Extended In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York.

FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester.

“FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville.

“HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state.

We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program

before the February 20th deadline.”

Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis.

Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College.

FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they

complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options.

Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community.

The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th.

FASNY HELP is made possible by a $4.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant awarded to FASNY. For more information on the FASNY HELP program, visit http://www.fasny.com/ resources/fasny-help/

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected over 52 boxes of pharmaceutical medications during the first DEC Long Island Pharmaceutical Take Back Day at healthcare facilities, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today.

Twenty-five long-term healthcare facilities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the program, which collects and responsibly destroys unused or expired pharmaceuticals.

“Health care facilities can produce large amounts of expired or unused medications and many have few options for disposal,” said Commissioner Martens. “The success of this collection by DEC is a positive step that will help to protect the environment by preventing medications from entering waterways. We are grateful to all the facilities that enthusiastically agreed to participate in this event.”

DEC received funding through the Environmental Fund for $150,000 to expand the program, which already exists in the New York City Watershed. The program is designed to reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are “flushed” by facilities and can end up in Long Island’s groundwater,

bays and estuaries.

Pharmaceuticals have been detected at low levels in New York State waterways and Long Island’s shallow groundwater.

Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said, “We are thrilled that DEC was able to provide this critical service, which benefits all Long Islanders and goes a long way toward protecting Long Island’s drinking and surface waters from pharmaceutical contaminants.

Giving health care facilities a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications, and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.”

Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products.

Prescription drug take back efforts began in the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater.

Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways.

Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water.

Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested.

Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and other support services.

They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship

and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. Volunteers should be able to drive to various locations within Nassau County and commit to one hour per week of socialization with their senior.

According to Family & Children’s Association President/CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “The Friendly Visitor program will add a much-needed socialization component to our cadre of services devoted to Long Island’s seniors. We assist many

seniors’ goals of living independently in their homes and this program will support them in that effort.”

Basketball Tournament Set Students - more than 50 in all - from Suffolk County Community College’s Radio and Television Production program are gearing up and practicing for what amounts to their Super Bowl Sunday of broadcast production, the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XV Basketball Tournament that will be hosted for the second consecutive year at the college’s Ammerman Campus in Selden and livestreamed via SharksTV on the College’s website to hoops-hungry fans.

Student camera operators, stage managers, switchers, audio and video technicians are preparing and practicing for the Friday, February 27th to Sunday, March 1st tournament when they will present eight live games over the three days from five camera positions throughout the Brookhaven Gymnasium;

including four instant replay angles.

Alan Bernstein, Assistant Academic Chair, Department of Communications said the experience garnered by the students is invaluable.

“This is an all hands on deck production and tremendous opportunity for our students to acquire real life production experience,” Bernstein said.

Bernstein said that alumni of his program will also be involved. Among those alumni will be Eric Abram and Rich Ballato, who regularly work on professional sports telecasts in the New York area. Prior to tournament weekend, the students will lay cable, check lighting, conduct sound checks and create graphics and introductions for each of the tournament’s 16 participating teams.

Suffolk County Community College has equipped student-based

teams with the skills and systems needed to produce professional, top-quality webcasts, streamed over its website.

The college’s remote production van is equipped with state-of the-art Newtek Tricaster 860 production systems and a Newtek 3Play 425 video record and playback system.

The student tournament webcast was watched last year by an international audience and by viewers state-wide. This year’s broadcast will be available from the Suffolk County Community College homepage at www. sunysuffolk.edu during the tournament weekend.

Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number.

• Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name.

Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts.

• Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

retrieve them.

• Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know.

Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address.

• Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement.

If you see any problems, immediately report them to your financial institution. The Federal Trade Commission offers guidance on immediate steps to take to limit the harm.
