The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Long Island Region, is accepting applications for ice cream truck opportunities at Belmont Lake, Heckscher, Hempstead Lake and Valley Stream State Parks for May 1st thru October 31st, 2022.

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets.

“The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break.

The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.”

The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves.

Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs.

“We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.”

Community and rescue organizations participating in the show include Tylers Rescue, Chippy’s Angels to the Rescue, Haven Animal Foundation, Last Chance Animal Rescue, Pet Partners, LI Golden Retriever Rescue, and more The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Admission is Adults $15, Kids 3-11 are $6, and those under three years old are always free.

Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School students recently pondered how, like snowflakes, no two people are alike. The “Snow Unique” activity was sponsored by the school’s Lighthouse Committee, which tailors lessons based on Stephen Covey’s teachings about leadership and helping students become productive and kind individuals.

During a lesson given by school counselor Sara Comisky, the students

described snowflakes and analyzed snowflake photos, coming to the conclusion that snowflakes have different shapes, sizes and designs. They were then asked how snowflakes and people are alike and discussed how people have unique characteristics, just like snowflakes.

“I explained how all of us are special in our own unique way, and our strengths and differences are what make Commack Road Elementary School

such as special place,” Ms. Comisky said.

The students were then given a snowflake with the phrase, “I am unique because… .” During the month, students have been completing their snowflake with words and pictures describing what makes each of them unique. The snowflakes are currently being hung on the bulletin board located in the school’s main hallway for the entire learning community to read.

The Reboli Center for Art & History in Stony Brook will for the first time feature the photographs of the late artist Joseph Reboli and several wellknown Long Island and New York based photographers such as: Donna Crinnian; Jeremy Dennis; Vanessa Fischer; Daniel Jones; Jacques LeBlanc; Timothy McCarthy; Jessica Neilson; Patricia Paladines; Matthew Raynor, Paul Scala; Leonid Shishov; Corinne Tousey; Marlene Weinstein; and Jo-Anne Wilson.

The exhibit is titled Through the Lens and can be viewed through March 27, 2022.

In conjunction with this exhibit, a companion show is in the History Room focusing on the life and work of nature photographer, Howard Eskin, a patron of the arts and dear friend of Joseph Reboli, who also collected many of his paintings. The Reboli Center is grateful to Lisa Eskin for lending items and for providing background information. JEREMY DENNIS PHOTOGPRAHER Eskin concentrated on photographing nature, and many of his pictures were published by the Audubon Society. In addition, there will be a slideshow depicting the evolution of photography from when the first recorded photograph was taken in the early 1800s.

“Just as Joe’s paintings glowed with illuminous light, so do his photographs. Joe was not widely known for his photography, but he really enjoyed it and I am happy to share that side of him. I have known the Eskin family for a longtime, and am very proud to document Howard’s life and work as part of this new exhibit,” said Lois Reboli, a founder and president of the Reboli Center for Art & History.

DODENHOFF SIGNS TO PLAY LACROSSE FOR SUNY ONEONTA - East Islip High School senior Chelsea Dodenhoff signed a national letter of intent on Jan. 10 to play lacrosse for SUNY Oneonta, where she plans to major in psychology.

Dodenhoff, a four-year Scholar-Athlete who plays attack, is a starter for the Long Island Empire travel lacrosse team. As a goalie for three years on East Islip’s varsity field hockey team, she serves as co-captain, earned AllCounty and All-County Honorable Mention accolades, and was named to Newsday’s Top 50 Field Hockey Players to Watch.

Dodenhoff also is a threeyear member of East Islip’s varsity winter track team.

The Reboli Center Presents Through The Lens, Showcasing The Photography Of Joseph Reboli And Many Prominent Photographers

East Islip High School social studies teacher and mock trial team coach Patsy Lester appeared as a contestant on the “Jeopardy!” game show on Jan. 7, finishing in second place and winning $2,000.

Lester lost to the superchampion Amy Schneider, who at that time had won 28 times and earned over $1 million dollars.

“I first tried out by taking the online contestant test back in March 2020 when we were on lockdown,” Lester said. “I took the test for fun. I’ve always been a ‘Jeopardy!’ fan but never expected to actually get on the show.”

After she took the test, Lester was told she had a qualifying score. “I had watched the champion Amy plow through eight other contestants in four shows before mine filmed, so I was definitely feeling nervous,” she said. “The show itself goes so fast. I felt like I blinked my eyes and it was over. The hardest thing about ‘Jeopardy!’ is the buzzer timing. When the host reads the clue, a person on set enables the signaling devices and big lights flash to let the contestants know they can ring in. If you hit the
