Buses replace trains between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma February 10-11 The construction of a second track related to the Long Island Rail Road's Double Track Project will shut down LIRR train service between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma over the weekend of February 10-11.

If you are planning to travel on the Ronkonkoma Branch this weekend, please make note • Westbound customers from Ronkonkoma will board buses departing up to 44 minutes earlier than normal train times in order to connect with trains at Hicksville.

• Eastbound customers will board buses at Hicksville for travel to Ronkonkoma and can expect 44 minutes of additional travel time.

Twelve dedicated and talented Central Islip High School Cheerleaders will be heading to the National Cheerleading Championship at Disney World in Orlando Florida.

The squad of twenty girls has qualified for Nationals for the second year in a row. Unfortunately, they were unable to attend last year due to a lack of funds to finance the trip.

The girls held several fundraisers again this year to help fund the trip to Orlando but fell short of their goal.

When Suffolk County Legislator Steven Flotteron learned of the girl’s dilemma, he looked for funding opportunities in order to fulfill their dream of competing. As in the past, The John C. Dunphy Foundation was more than willing to help such a well deserving cause. They generously donated $7,500 to the

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days.

Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information.

Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time.

Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between.

We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited.

We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration.

But that was where the academic connection ceased.

Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned.

Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed.

Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection.

But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago.

Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage.

Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills.

They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage!

Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

(NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around.

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

Tax Filing Assistance Bethpage Federal Credit Union will help low-to-moderate income households on Long Island prepare their tax returns at no cost by offering the IRS’ free tax preparation service, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

Now in its 15th year, the Bethpage VITA program, the largest across Long Island, is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including non-Bethpage members.

Starting February 3rd, 2018 through April 7th, 2018, trained and bilingual tax preparers will be available at Bethpage’s Bay Shore, Farmingdale, Hempstead, and Massapequa branches to meet with eligible taxpayers with 2017 incomes of $55,000 and below. VITA services will be available on Saturday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. No appointments are necessary.

Additional mobile sites will be available to Long Islanders beginning February 1st, 2018.

These sites include the Brentwood Public Library, Freeport Public Library, the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury, the Mastics, Moriches, Shirley Community Library, the United Healthcare Community Plan in Hempstead, Wyandanch Public Library, Copiague Public Library, and the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach.

“For 15 years, Bethpage has helped the Long Island community file their tax returns for free, something we are very proud of.

Tax filing assistance can be costly so it has been our great pleasure to spearhead this important initiative,” said Robert Suarez, Assistance Vice President of Community Development for Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

This year, over 200 trained volunteers from local colleges and universities will be working one-on-one with taxpayers.

Partnering schools include Adelphi University, Farmingdale State College, Hofstra University, LIU Post, Molloy College, St. Joseph’s College, Stony Brook University, SUNY Old Westbury, Touro Law School, Nassau Community College, and Suffolk Community College.

Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households, which can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits.

In 2017, Bethpage completed 2,266 VITA tax returns and helped secure

IRS total refunds of over $2.6 million. Bethpage also helped secure $261,929 in child tax credits in 2017, and $677,343 in Earned Income Tax Credits. Since the program’s inception in 2004, over 17,435 individuals have filed their tax returns through Bethpage, resulting in nearly $20,177,039 million returned to the Long Island community.

Qualifying taxpayers planning to take advantage of Bethpage’s VITA program need to bring the following materials with them for review: photo identification, social security cards for you, your spouse and dependents, current year’s tax package if you received one, wage and earnings statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099R from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s Federal and State returns if available, bank routing and account numbers for tax refund direct deposit, total paid for daycare, and provider’s tax ID. To file taxes electronically for a joint tax return, both spouses must be present.

by Town Board members John C. Cochrane, Jr. and Mary Kate Mullen, in welcoming 39 Charles A. Mulligan Middle School students to Town Hall on Tuesday, January 30th.

The students were recognized for their participation and contributions to the middle school’s “I Matter” Project - a youth empowerment program designed to transform students, teachers, schools and communities by

encouraging authentic communication, selfrealization, and empathy through art.

The interdisciplinary program ignites dialogue on anxiety, depression, suicide, social media addiction, gang violence, and substance abuse critical issues that modernday students are often confronted with - while giving adolescents and young adults a platform to be seen and heard in the community.

Throughout the month of January, the student’s

artwork appeared on display at Town Hall, lining the halls outside the Town Board room.

“We are so proud to host this powerful exhibit.

Through their expressive work, these talented young student artists have shown themselves to be kind, caring and sensitive individuals. I am confident they will go on to be successful in life, and we wish them the very best,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
