The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council’s Trailblazer District will be holding an exciting event open to the public hosted by our very own Scout units (Packs, Troops, and Crews) on Saturday, March 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sun-Vet Mall in Holbrook.

The event will celebrate the spirit of Scouting which continues to thrive in Suffolk County.

The Trailblazer Mall Show will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. with an opening parade showcasing each units flags and banners. Planned activities include a district-wide Pinewood Derby runoff, booths by the district’s units with awards for creativity of the activity, adherence to the theme, and proper identification of the unit, chartered organization, and hometown. People are requested to bring

non-perishable food items which will be donated to a local food pantry.

Participants will include the Town of Brookhaven Recycling team, the Protestant Scouting Committee, Jewish Scouting Committee, members of the Holtsville Ecology Center, and Electronic Waste Recycling Inc. who will conduct an on-site e-waste collection.

People are invited to bring unwanted computers and other electronics to be properly disposed of at the event.

Additional participants will be Scouter’s Reserve

showcasing Scouting memorabilia, a local robotics team, and a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser will be held.

Serving nearly 26,000 young people between 7 and 21 years of age, the Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is the foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Trailblazer District, one of four Scouting districts serving Suffolk County, serves the communities on the South Shore from Connetquot to Montauk.

Suffolk County Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30.

Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall 400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title.

Additionally, Foley’s teams have won one national and 11 regional sportsmanship awards and more than 41 of his former players have continued their intercollegiate athletic careers at fouryear Division II and Division III schools.

“Athletic Director Foley is wholeheartedly a Shark. He is an excellent teacher, first and then an awesome coach, second,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, adding, “he is not only a great, winning coach, but just as importantly Coach Foley leads by example with his upbeat attitude, the first ingredient of success in basketball and in life.”

Foley graduated from Seton Hall High School in 1965, where he averaged 30 points per game as a senior and was coached by the legendary Frank Layden (president/head coach of the Utah Jazz) and held the Suffolk County and Long Island high school basketball career-scoring records for many years. Foley went on to Seton Hall University on a scholarship and was the university’s basketball team captain in 1968-1969 and averaged more than

Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you?

As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it.

This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process.

Easier said than done.

After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular.

And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway.

Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate.

Immediately.

I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day?

Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above.

In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Data Collection

Students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Retail Store Services, a special career education program, learned about the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a standard used by agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and

publishing statistical data related to the United States business economy.

On their recent trip to the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore, they used the mall directory to properly categorize stores using NAICS. Business Education Teacher Virginia Rios said, “Students apply what they learn in the classroom

during field trips. Here at the mall, they learn how to navigate by using the mall directory. They observe window displays and take note of how stores advertise. These are all things they learn in the classroom and a follow-up lesson will take place about what they learned at the mall.”

All-State Selections Seven East Islip High School student-musicians were selected for All-State honors this year by the New York State School Music Association.

Senior flutist Valli Mani and junior clarinetist Harrison Gieraltowski were both selected for the All-State Symphonic Band, with senior trombonist Doug Keller chosen as an alternate.

Seniors Joseph Janover (tenor II), Samantha Sampollo (alto I), Sam Sharkey (tenor II) and Alyssa Stephens (soprano II) were all selected to sing with the All-State Mixed Chorus.

While participating in December at the NYSSMA Winter Conference’s AllState concerts, held at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, Gieraltowski and Mani both performed in the All-State Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Stephen Peterson. The ensemble rehearsed up to eight hours a day for three

days, performing extremely challenging works such as Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide.”

Mani, the co-valedictorian for East Islip’s Class of 2015, was seated as second chair flute, ranking her as one of the top flutists in New York State.

“Valli, Harrison and Doug are all extremely talented students, but what sets them apart from the rest and led them to be All-State musicians is their hard work, discipline and dedication,” said band director Christopher Neske. “I am so proud and humbled to be their teacher.”

The four chorus students, who likewise participated at the Winter Conference, all boast impressive resumes.

Janover serves as president of East Islip’s honors choir, with Stephens as vice-president; both are enrolled in AP music theory and the new Acting

for Musical Theatre class.

Sampollo, the alto section leader in the honors choir, also serves as president of the school’s women’s choir and is enrolled in Acting for Musical Theatre.

Sharkey serves as tenor section leader of the honors choir, and plays trumpet in East Islip’s honors wind ensemble and honors symphony orchestra.

Janover, Sampollo and Stephens will all be featured in the high school’s March musical production of “West Side Story.”

“All four students have not only displayed excellence in their musicianship and leadership skills but a genuine love and appreciation for music,” said Bethany Affelt, the high school’s choral and theater director. “To have four students chosen from one high school to sing with the All-State choir is truly a remarkable feat.”

Seal Of Approval Families and students from David Kennedy’s kindergarten class at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School attended the Riverhead Foundation’s first seal release of the new year on January 24th, near the Ponquogue Bridge on Dune Road in Hampton Bays.

The foundation rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured marine mammals

found in Long Island waters with the hope of reintroducing them to the wild.

Kennedy’s students participated in the Riverhead Foundation’s seal adoption program as a class-learning project. They adopted a yearling harbor seal named Ivy that was found near Montauk Point, suffering from a serious respiratory infection. The students read books and

stories about seals and other marine mammals, and created a bulletin board featuring their own writings and illustrations about what they learned.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the students waved goodbye to Ivy and wished her good luck as they watched her swim out into the chilly waters of Shinnecock Bay.

Taking On Kindness Students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School kicked off two weeks of the annual Kindness and Justice Challenge with a special assembly presented by the student council on January 16th.

The school wide event in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day serves to promote acts of kindness and justice

within the school and the wider community, with the assembly providing examples in the form of student-acted skits showing different acts of kindness.

During the challenge, each child at RCK sets a goal of how many acts of kindness and justice they think they will be able to complete between January 16th and January 30th.

Then every day they will log the acts of kindness they have performed by writing the date and description.

“The Kindness and Justice Challenge is designed to review the life and work of Dr. King and the civil rights movement,” said teacher Heather Johnson. “We want to encourage our school to perform good deeds for others.”

Researching Substance Abuse

Students in seventh and eighth grades, for example, selected an artist of their choice from various periods in Art History. They then studied this artist’s works in more depth and emulated one of his or her works using acrylic on canvas to depict their own version of the artist’s style and techniques.

This Spring, the young artists will perform their “Living Museum”, in which each student will dress up as their artist of choice, and ”become” a living exhibit next to their own work of art. Think ”wax museum” come to life! Guests will have the opportunity to stroll through this Living Museum and ”interact” with the ”exhibits” by pressing a button at each display.

The student-artist will Come to Life and immediately begin delivering a pre-planned

specific terminology, the reasons why young adults choose to experiment with drugs and how drugs enter the bloodstream, the students spent time at the school’s library media center. Under the direction of librarian Valerie Ware, they researched their topics, exploring physical and psychological effects, common street names, how drugs enters the body, history, statistics, state and federal laws, and means of getting help for persons who are addicted.

their findings to their classmates, using a wide range of media including posters, movies, PowerPoint presentations, puppet shows, game show skits, song parodies and computer animations.

“As each group presented, the audience filled in a drug chart to use as a resource so they have information about all of the most dangerous chemicals that young adults experiment, which have deadly consequences,” said Padgur.

At Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, Art Teacher Vincent Montella nurtures the students’ artistic abilities while educating them on the arts, both classic and modern, in the most hands-on ways possible.

Since the start of the school year, SSCM students in all grades have been studying various artists, their works, understanding their particular styles and favorite medium - each working on age-appropriate projects to showcase their newly acquired skills and learning.

Supporting the East Islip school community’s increased focus on drug awareness, East Islip Middle School seventh- and eighth-graders conducted research on substance abuse, working both solo and in small groups and presented their findings to their peers and health teacher Chris Padgur.

Sixth through eighth grade students at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park came away with a lot more than a Playbill with their name in it last weekend, as the curtain came down on their final performance of Twelve Angry Men. The dedicated group of youngsters have been in rehearsals since September and played to a pretty full house in the Father Behan Auditorium all weekend long.

Together with a small stage crew, the group worked tirelessly at not only memorizing lines, but learning a surprising amount about our legal system, group process and communication, peer pressure and more. Terms such as “due process” and concepts such as “reasonable doubt” had never taken on such true meaning as the group worked to understand the challenge that each of the jurors they were playing was up against. (If you’ve never seen the play, teleplay, or either of the movies based on the play, they come highly recommended and the movies are both available streaming on Amazon.com.)

The level of attention to detail was evident from the simple, but well-planned set design to the character development of some of the most outspoken jury members and the meekest alike. Clearly, an impressive amount of preparation and comprehension went into the planning of SSCM’s production from start to finish.

they had never realized that sometimes, it just takes one voice...one person in a crowd, to have the courage to stand up for another human being. It occurred to them after reading through the play and then acting it out, that this kind of courage is possible and if we have the strength to be that one voice, one solitary person can make a difference. Others shared that the whole experience was very meaningful to them on a personal level, some of them having to stand up to friends who may have been less than supportive when they’d mentioned signing up for the play early on. While another few mentioned that the thought of public speaking had always scared the daylights out of them, which is why they had decided to challenge themselves and go for it!

It was clear that the students took away a whole lot more than a playbill and a flash new hat from wardrobe. Getting involved in theater arts is a valuable outlet for students of any age, and particularly on-stage time. With nearly 75% of the population experiencing glossophobia or fear of public speaking, getting accustomed to stage-time early in life can be so key in developing the skills to overcome such anxiety. After all, as Shakespeare wrote, ”All the world’s a stage” - is it not?

Heartfelt congratulations to all of the performers, stage crew, faculty, staff and those who volunteered their time to make SSCM’s performance such a success!

Perhaps most fitting of all, since this was performed by a group of 11-14 year-olds dramatically discussing the serious topic of a man on trial for the murder of his own father, it was ingenious that the Director of the school play took time after each performance to bring the group of tweens and teens back onto the stage for

a bit of discussion time with the audience. They shared with the audience, almost James Lipton-style, a bit about their acting process, about what they’d learned and what they’d taken away that might have been completely unexpected from their theater experience.

From the mouths of babes, as they say, eh? Some of the youngest performers, quite maturely, shared that

company to manufacture and distribute valentines.

Keeping Cards Although there are no rules governing just how long to keep and display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days. Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity.

However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient.

Etiquette Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection.

Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. If you do so regularly, it’s easier to send cards when the time comes.

Ensure greeting cards will arrive on time by mailing them out a week or two before the special day. Few things are worse than a card arriving late and seeming like an afterthought.

Address cards by hand and sign them personally.

Although desktop printers can make fast work of card mailings, writing things out by hand is a special touch that indicates you care.

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card.

The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year.

The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations.

Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this time-tested tradition.

Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing.

Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card
