tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind ~ Smithtown

www.GuideDog.org This organization exists to improve the quality of life for people that are blind, have low vision or have other special needs. They are currently in need of volunteer puppy raisers! Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. To be approved for this program, you must undergo a home visit by a staff member or an approved volunteer. Mardi Gras Dinner Dance The Marty Lyon’s Foundation – Long Island Chapter will host its 5th annual Marty Gras Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 17th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Captain Bill’s Restaurant; 122 Ocean Ave. in Bay Shore.

Proceeds will benefit the Foundation’s mission to grant wishes to children diagnosed with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses.

“The annual Chapter dinner dance at Captain Bill’s is an event that provides an opportunity for our generous supporters to come together to enjoy the festive New Orleans experience here on Long island.

The evening includes cocktails, buffet dinner and dessert with a hint of Nawlins flavor and lively music

The Marty Gras fund raiser is a reminder of the important mission of the Marty Lyons Foundation started over 35 years ago.

When we have a successful fundraising event like this, we are able to continue to make plans to grant more boys and girls with serious medical conditions their dream wishes. Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.”

And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form.

Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time.

To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them.

As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor.

“Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?”

We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!”

As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures.

As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling.

Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed.

“Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???”

Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement.

“That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.”

Beauty. It’s everywhere.

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

Forms for submission may be downloaded from the Town’s website at www. islipny.gov. Click the link “Veterans Affairs” then click the sentence that says “Councilman Cochrane’s office to lead New Editions of Islip’s “Journals of War Veterans.” Forms can also be obtained by visiting the Councilman’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip, first floor, west wing.

Obtaining Important Documents – Any veterans, or family members of veterans, hoping to access military benefits must have their service records in order and readily available.

The most important of these documents is their DD214/Honorable Discharge papers.

If any veteran or family member of a veteran is having trouble obtaining this document, contact Councilman Cochrane’s office at 631.224.5559.

Councilman Cochrane also strongly encourages veterans to register their DD214 with the Suffolk County Clerk to ensure that a backup document is on file.

Recognition for Cold War Service – Veterans who wish to receive a Cold War Recognition Certificate can visit Councilman Cochrane’s office (655 Main Street, Islip) to fill out the application form.

To be eligible, an applicant must have been a veteran serving at least one day during the Cold War era, (September 2nd, 1945 to December, 1991) and did not receive a less than honorable discharge.

Councilman Cochrane’s office will assist any veteran with obtaining a copy of their DD214 for proof of service. Just bring any military information you have to the Councilman’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip.

Islip Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., wishes to remind local veterans of the many services that the Town of Islip can provide to those who have served our country. Councilman Cochrane - a Navy veteran - has spearheaded the Town’s efforts to better serve those who have protected our nation. One of the programs is the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program, which began in 2012, has met with success and praise by the veteran community.

“PTSD impacts many veterans returning from overseas deployments and can have a serious and detrimental effect on their lives,” said Councilman Cochrane. “This is a unique program that can make a real difference and provide support to those who have sacrificed so much.”

Suffolk Zone Winners Islip High School seniors Vincent Capolongo and Kayla Multer were named winners at the 2017-2018 Suffolk Zone Awards dinner, held on December 6th at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge.

The Suffolk Zone awards are presented annually by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance

to the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class.

Capolongo, who serves as captain of the soccer, winter track and spring track teams, is an AllConference soccer winner and participates in Athletes Helping Athletes. He plans to attend Stony Brook University and major in mechanical engineering

Multer, Islip’s soccer team captain, basketball team member and is an All-County soccer recipient and participates in Mathletes. She plans to attend New York Institute of Technology and major in biology.

“Kayla and Vincent serve as true physical fitness role models and examples for success,” said Athletic Director John Sparacio.

In an annual early winter tradition, the Embers Coffee House variety show at East Islip High School entertained student audiences throughout the day while giving technology education teacher James Connell’s video production and broadcast television classes the chance to put their studies into practice and produce and film a live TV program.

Alexa Benitez, John Camlet, Stone Locke, Andrew Johnson and Stephanie Milito served as

genial hosts for the event, held in the broadcast room, while creative student talents Mal Brewster-Holland, Jess Chirpita, Micheal Gengo, Julia Lambert, Evan Mauner, Isaiah Robertson, Alicia Rodriguez and Katie Spina performed an array of music and comedy.

Producers Emily Baio, Kathryn Bingham and Jenna Donnelly; technical directors Kimberly Halliday and Michael Soloman; audio technician Bailey Nelson; and stage

crew members Robert Heller IV, Eddie Sallie and Zach Wenksus ensured that Embers ran smoothly, while baristas John DiOrio, Rob Iadanza and Kim Villano served up hot coffee and snacks to the more than 500 students who attended this year’s show.

“This was my third year being a part of the event,” said Camlet. “I feel like I can safely say that this was my favorite year by far.

I love being a part of this crew.”

Islip High School’s School to Careers Partnership recently hosted a Sophomore Career Exploration Workshop event for the sophomore class, following last winter’s similar event for freshmen.

The workshop was

attended by approximately 40 professionals from the community from a variety of professions and career fields, including welding, glass design, general contracting, project management, medicine, dentistry, nursing, radiology, physical therapy,

lab technology, plumbing, electrical work, law, finance and community relations. Groups of eight students were paired with a presenter for eightminute breakout sessions, conversing about the professional’s job, skills and education.

“Both Jenna and Evan contribute to the overall positive tone of the physical education class as well as the school,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. “They continue to make an outstanding effort to be cooperative, honest and enthusiastic in class, and Jenna and Evan have made East Islip proud once again for their accomplishments.”

Accompanied by teachers Jean Flood, Linda Leach and Carene Mahoney, 42 East Islip High School English students visited New York City in December, including viewings of Macy’s decorated windows, Bryant Park’s Christmas tree and Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree

and ice rink.

“The best part of the field trip was the tour of NBC Studios,” said Leach.

During this segment, the students got to see the stages used for “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” while

soaking up behind-thescenes information and gossip from their tour guides, the NBC pages.

The tour ended with an interactive video where the students were able to participate in an Olympic broadcast production.

Educational Interlude Sixth-graders at Islip Middle School recently “traveled” to Egypt via Skype as part of their study of ancient civilizations, communicating with an Egyptian educator about topics like the Nile River,

Egyptian monuments ,and habitat and wildlife in Egypt and asking her questions about life in Egypt, past and present. The activity was coordinated by technology specialist Tim Brush.

“Advances in technology now afford us opportunities for exciting authentic learning experiences that truly bring history to life, such as this,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Miltenberg.

HONORING A LIFE - Congressman Pete King recently attended a ceremony held at the First Baptist Church in Bay Shore to honor NYPD Detective Tommy Merriweather - an American hero who died five years ago (1/21/13) of cancer resulting from his tireless work at Ground Zero following the horrific attacks of 9/11. Since Det. Merriweather’s death, Congressman King has worked with his widow Jackie to ensure that his legacy and memory are acknowledged and remembered, including having a EDUCATIONAL INTERLUDE - Sixth-graders at Islip Middle School recently Bay Shore street renamed in his honor. Informing on Addiction Dr. Stephen L. Dewey, a research professor at NYU School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry, gave a hard-hitting presentation to East Islip High School students

in grades 8, 9 and 10 on January 16th regarding his research on the disease of addiction and the effects of addictive drugs on the human brain. He spoke about the substances that

can lead to addiction, and answered student questions throughout and after the presentation.

Dr. Dewey also held a second, in-depth assembly that evening in the

high school auditorium for students, parents and other community members, regarding the problems with drugs facing Long Island schools and communities.

“This presentation was absolutely amazing and so informative for parents and students,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “Substance abuse is an epidemic in the

United States and everyone must work together in order to find a way to control these substances from entering our country and even our homes.”
