Kicking Into High Gear Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work?

Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers.

The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for.

But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it.

Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection?

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County.

The purpose of the SOCAB will be to collaboratively establish and implement programs that seek to resolve conflict, concerns and issues regarding the Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further promote communication and understanding among

Competition Kickoff More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 4th for a local kickoff of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2014 robotics game called “Aerial AssistSM.” “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.”

The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match.

Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field.

In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally.

SBPLI representatives, team mentors ,volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC).

The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bicounty effort to help Long Islanders improve their health.

A key component of LIHC’s work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well.

Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event.

NSHC is the agency that

represents Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted that this ground-breaking endeavor is exactly what the state health department is calling for in its effort to promote population health and integrated, coordinated health care services throughout New York’s local communities.

Health commissioners for both Nassau and Suffolk counties - Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken respectively – echoed Dr. Zucker’s comments.

They agreed that the prevalence of chronic disease is widespread in both counties and a bi-county initiative like LIHC will help raise awareness and connect Long Islanders to the appropriate care and services.

Public health and public affairs experts from the region’s hospitals, as well as health department leaders and representatives from social service organizations and public health specialists from colleges, comprise the collaborative.

“Health care is a reactive industry . . . we respond to patients’ needs when they are sick and injured,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “What is invigorating about this effort is that it is proactive.”

The group initially formed in February 2013 in response to enhanced state and federal government regulations that require all health care providers, local health departments, and community-based service organizations to

work together to assure and improve health in communities they serve.

It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities.

More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, community-based organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities.

LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a result, LIHC’s efforts will focus on these priorities.

LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well.

Health care providers hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types work together to provide coordinated health care.

The website – http://nshc. org/long-island-healthcollaborative/ - is just the first step in achieving this goal. A bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and built-environment policy changes at the local level.

The Bond Of Brotherly Lover I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong.

My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration.

For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family.

My little brother is the reason why I strive for

greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness.

My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine.

There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in

us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed.

I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

The website is a component of their work. The userfriendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well.

The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties

At the East Islip Board of Education’s monthly business meeting on January 9th, students were honored for their exceptional communityminded spirit, and a pair of generous donations were accepted.

East Islip Middle School student-musician Alexandra Stewart was recognized for her charitable flute and piano recital performance at St.

Mark’s Church in Islip, which raised close to $1,400 for cancer research, while six students from East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School – Dylan Baranek, Emily Blair, Caleigh DiBeneditto, Robert Finn, Joy Petersen and Joseph Zimmitti – were honored for their Rainbow Looms of Love project, which raised $1,250 in donated funds for the EJ Autism Foundation.

A check for $60,000 was donated by the For the Kids Foundation of East Islip to support numerous valuable programs at all six of the district’s schools, and eiMAPS provided $2,000 to the district’s arts and music department for art display boards.

Islip High School students Kieran Mullins and Vanessa Juengerkes were honored as Suffolk Zone award recipients at a dinner sponsored by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, held at the Hyatt Regency on December 4th.

The criteria for achieving this award are: exceptional physical performance, scholastic ability, and outstanding character and leadership qualities in both physical education and other school-based activities. These students contribute to the overall

positive outcomes of their physical education classes as well as the school.

Kieran excels in physical education and as a threesport athlete in varsity football, basketball and lacrosse. “He is a true leader in physical education and serves as a role model in class,” said Bob Panariello, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. Kieran is a member of the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society and will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Throughout her high

school career, Vanessa has maintained a 99 average while serving as captain of the varsity volleyball, basketball and softball teams. “Vanessa excels in both physical education and athletics, and her teachers describe her as a leader and highly motivated student,” said Mr. Panariello. Vanessa is a member of the National Honor Society, Athletes Helping Athletes, SADD and Habitat for Humanity.

She plans to attend Dowling College in the fall, where she will continue her softball career.

SHELTER COLLECTION - At Bay Shore South Country School, Mrs. Danielle Cristando’s class collected dog toys, treats, food and blankets to be donated to a nearby animal shelter. As a class, students read numerous stories about the many ways dogs help people and how important it is for us to help our canine friends, not only during the holiday season but every day. Mrs. Cristando’s class hopes their donations gave some dogs a “paw-fect” holiday.

The Town of Islip Youth Bureau and their youth service agency, South Shore Community Organization have joined forces with local School Districts, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Keep Islip Clean to collect jeans for the national Teens for Jeans Program. With tough economic times, more families have less to spend on everything, including basic necessities like clothing.

The Islip Youth Bureau is encouraging residents, community and school groups, and businesses to support the efforts of the Islip Youth Bureau and the Teens for Jeans program by donating new or used, jeans in good condition (any size) at one of the local drop-off sites before February 14th, 2014.

Currently, the locations of the drop off sites are: The Islip Youth Bureau, 401 Main Street, room 312, Islip; Legislator Tom Cilmi’s Office, 96 E. On November 23rd, eight fourth-grade students at Commack Road Elementary School in Islip, along with their music teacher Michael Baur, represented the district at the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s annual PEAK (Parents,

Winter Concerts Held East Islip High School’s Rydzeski Hall was aglow with the sights and sounds of inspiring musical performances as the school held its annual winter concerts on December 17th and 18th.

The first concert featured the honors symphony orchestra, directed by Susan Rydzeski. After opening with the overture from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” the orchestra played the theme from “The Polar Express” and Tchaikovsky’s “Marche Slave.”

Under the direction of Bethany Affelt, the East Islip High School Honors Choir sang traditional Zulu dowry song “Amavolovolo,” a selection of five Hebrew love songs accompanied by a string quartet, and a medley of “Carol of the Bells” and “Deck the Halls.” The singers closed with Kurt Bestor’s “Prayer of the Children,” dedicated to the families and communities of Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Ending the first night, the school’s wind ensemble, led by director Christopher Neske, played Samuel Barber’s “Commando March”; Newell Long’s “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” narrated by Peter McDermott; and Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy.”

At the second of the pair of concerts, the evening kicked

off with the string orchestra, directed by Alyssa Sciarrino, who performed the finale of Mozart’s Divertimento No. 13, the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Affelt then led the women’s choir and concert choir.

The former began with “African Processional,” featuring

Erin Fitzgerald and Katie Ginty, sophomore Ashley Karlin, and juniors Samantha Sampollo and Alyssa Stephens – while “Kol Han’shamah” was sung in Hebrew and incorporated rhythmic hand claps. They closed with upbeat holiday classic “Jingle Bell Rock.”

The concert choir opened with the Puerto Rican carol “Saludo, Saludo” before moving on to “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical “Rent,” featuring vocal solos from sophomore Catherine Graber and junior Edward Yankus. Next up was “The Little Drummer Boy,” followed by “Tikkun Olam,” sung in Hebrew as well as English and featuring freshman Vinny Altman and sophomore Veronica Saager.

Ending the night and the winter concert series, the East Islip High School Concert Band and director Neske performed Claude T. Smith’s “Emperata Overture,” “Chorale and Bell Carol” arranged by John Moss and G.K. Walth’s Symphonic Dance No. 3 “Fiesta.”

Brentwood UFSD students Ashley Paez, Kayla Diaz, and Jennifer Luna enrolled in the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology Animal Science Program felt so strongly about advocating for animals and making a difference that they decided to reach out to their home school principal to see if they could create a club.

The administration was very supportive and a Brentwood UFSD English teacher who does animal volunteer work offered to help facilitate their efforts.

Animal Science Teacher Lisa Mongiello said, “The students were excited to start the club Lend a Paw and advertised it through the school. To their surprise so many of

their peers showed up to join to participate that the meeting had to be moved from a classroom into the cafeteria!”

These are motivated students!

Both the administration and the students realized how people can make a difference and make the world a better place.

Writers’ Block Honored

Bay Shore High School’s Literary-Art magazine, The Writers’ Block, has received a rating of “First Place with Special Merit” from the American Scholastic Press Association, making it the only scholastic publication in New York, and one of only 17 publications nation-wide, to do so.

ASPA’s 2013 Magazine Judge wrote, “The Writers’ Block is an

amazing publication! You have mastered not only the elements of a good publication (staffbox, table of contents, etc...) but have also published excellent works from your school population.

The Writers’ Block is a model for those upand-coming magazines and inspiration for those magazines that haven’t quite acquired

the necessary skills.”

Congratulations go out to High School English teacher and Writers’ Block adviser Matt Pasca and his two student editors, Allison Hedemark ‘13 and Danielle Helf ‘13.

On November 9th, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Police Hispanic Society of Suffolk County (P.H.S.S.C) teamed up with the Peanut Butter Gangs Hospitality Too soup kitchen at St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood.

Boy Scouts from Troop 343 (Hauppauge) participated that day, assisting with serving food to the poor and needy as well as joining the P.H.S.S.C. in donating food and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Coordinated by Boy Scout Troop 343 Committee Member and P.H.S.S.C. Officer Gerry Frielingsdorf, 22 Boy Scouts were able to help that day as well as to prepare more than one hundred wash-up kits (which included tooth paste, soap, shampoo, tooth brushes, razors and washcloths and were packed in individual ziplock bags) were assembled by the scouts for those who came to lunch

that day.

The wash kit items were donated by the P.H.S.S.C. Scouting volunteer/Officer Gerry Frielingsdorf, who said, “The Scouts were awesome! So were the parents and leaders and who drove someone there. This was a great opportunity for the boys to earn community service but more importantly to give back to those less fortunate than ourselves.”

On December 12th, Boy Scouts of Troop 343 assisted the gift wrapping marathon that was again hosted by the Police Hispanic Society of Suffolk County Inc., a not-for-profit organization comprised of Suffolk County Police Officers. School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) along with Farmingdale State College Foundation will present its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!”

All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship.

The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college.

It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for students when he was alive. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to

further the education of the youth on Long Island.

SUNY are built-in supports for students and faculty, such as 24/7 assistance for students, whether they need technical help, tutoring, financial planning, or academic advisement services; and a Center for Online Teaching Excellence where faculty can opt-in to training programs and online forums to broaden their knowledge about developing effective online courses or share best practices and learn directly from colleagues across SUNY. Flowering Trees For Arbor Day Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014.

By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American

redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods.

“These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.”

The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1st and

May 31st, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch tall trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

Virtually every Catholic elementary school student goes on to one of Long Island’s elite Catholic high Schools upon graduation, and 99% of those students go on to college. So it should be no surprise that preparing students to excel in that atmosphere is an academic, spiritual and social goal beginning in the elementary schools. That degree of awareness, integration and cooperation is not an accident, however. Did you know that there is an active program to create a Catholic education network from Nursery through higher education? Its goal is to provide students and families with a greater return on their investment in choosing Catholic schools, and its effect is to provide a continuum of Catholic education.

The ‘continuum effort’ manifests itself in a variety of ways that benefit students directly, help faculty members grow their skills, and help the schools groom their next generation of skilled administrators. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department and the elementary schools are currently working with St John’s University, Fordham University and Molloy College on

initiatives to advance Catholic education.

St. John’s University announced the establishment of the St. John’s Catholic School Scholarship in November of 2011 that provides any graduate of a Catholic high school a minimum of $10,000 over four years, with a maximum potential scholarship of $20,000, based on financial need. The scholarship will benefit many of our students, will help to strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education.

The relationship with St John’s also helps with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators), St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on Math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program, CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams), involves meetings at the university and on-site at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices.

The Diocese has also worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future Administrators. Teachers

Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach.

They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach.

Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand.

Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more.

As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends.

Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean...
