The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway.

So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult.

(Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.)

In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again.

Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or parttime in a horticulture program. In 2015, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each.

Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping to further the education of worthy students planning a career in the field.

RECYCLE RUSHSM is a recycling-themed game played by two Alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season.

held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally.

SBPLI representatives, team mentors, volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program.

Coding Celebration The Middle Country Central School District students recently completed an “Hour of Code” as part of a nationwide initiative to involve millions of students in computer programming education.

“Hour of Code” aims to encourage students to explore computer science career opportunities and stress the need to integrate computer programming lessons into everyday school instruction.

Students districtwide participated and completed hands-

on activities that taught coding basics including simple algorithms, conditional statements, or coding language. The students also learned the fundamentals of repeatlooping, which allows a student to repeat a code.

“Computer literacy has become vital for completing daily tasks, let alone career readiness,” said Superintendent Roberta Gerold. “We must begin to provide computer science lessons to students in order to encourage critical thinking and prepare our students for

the ever growing digital world.”

During the 2015 season, 50 teams from Long Island, New York City, and the surrounding areas; Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Israel; and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional

FRC on March 26th-28th, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 22nd-25th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.

“The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Winter. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.”

CYO Schedule The second half of the 2014-2015 St. Joseph’s Church of Ronkonkoma, CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) basketball season got underway on Friday, January 9th.

CYO Chairman Henry Melchiona welcomed the children, volunteer coaches and parents as these eager 3rd & 4th graders put their basketballs down to listen to the chairman.

Afterwards the youngsters got back to

where they left off in December, with games scheduled for 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Players began running, dribbling and shooting their way into the new basketball season.

This CYO basketball program, according to the chairman, has grown from an initial 30 youngsters, to this year’s enrollment of over 300 – boys and girls.

Volunteer coaches teach these energetic youngsters basketball skills and

sportsmanship, while providing an opportunity to make new friends, and just have fun. Games are played at local Connetquot and Sachem schools, as well as St. Joseph’s Elementary School gym/ auditorium.

Parents, along with siblings and grandparents, are on hand to cheer their teams on.

Everyone is looking forward to another exciting year of St. Joseph’s CYO Clinic Division basketball.

Digging Pink Islip Middle School’s girls volleyball team held a Dig Pink game on January 9th, raising $500 for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

The fundraiser included sales of Dig Pink T-shirts as well as baked goods made by the students and their families. The team

members also created colorful posters during the holiday break, which were displayed around the school to advertise the event.

Parents and members of Islip High School’s varsity and JV volleyball teams volunteered to man the booth.

East Islip Middle School eighth-grader Victoria Keenan triumphed in the annual school wide spelling bee for the second year in a row, beating fellow eight-grade student Julia Desiderio with the word “nebula” after numerous nail-biting final rounds.

The 26-round event, which included 42 participants, was the qualifying round for the local edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with students competing to represent East Islip at the local edition of the national bee, to be held on Feb. 8 at

Hofstra University.

“The spelling bee was action-packed this year,” said English teacher Ann Mingione. “Our classroom winners successfully spelled a multitude of challenging words and we congratulate all of the participants.”

Sarah Powell, a sophomore at East Islip High School, has been selected as the school’s winner of this year’s Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership award, sponsored by the Lions Club of the Islips.

As part of her recognition, Powell will represent East Islip while attending the HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar, a three-day conference held at Adelphi University in Garden City from June 19th to 21st.

Founded in 1958 by civic-minded actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY’s mission is to inspire a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

Programs like the Adelphi seminar provide selected students with unique leadership training and motivation-building experiences.

HOBY’s Leadership award competition is open only to students in 10th grade and rewards students who exhibit outstanding leadership skills and participation in community service.

Powell’s essay discussed the rewards and challenges of being a leader in the school community, focusing on her experience as a student-teacher, guiding young children at

an event at Lori’s School of Dance in East Islip.

School Receives Grant St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that it has won a $25,000 award from the Celebrate My Drive Grant program powered by State Farm®.

This grant is the result of St. John’s finishing among the top 100 out of 3,283 registered high schools in an online competition in which students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members made commitments to drive safely.

The effort was led by the St. John the Baptist S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club and was embraced by the entire school community.

A portion of the grant money will be used to fund a program that will bring awareness of the dangers of texting while driving to the school community.

“This award is a testament to the magnificent school community here at St. John’s.” said Assistant Principal Darius Penikas.
