During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority.

Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Together they will be handing out gourmet to-go meals for free to anyone who stops by the Angels’ Patchogue store when the meals are available (please visit the Angels of Long Island Facebook page for meal arrival updates). Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!”

While Orville and Wilbur Wright, otherwise known as the Wright Brothers, may be the most widely recognized brothers associated with aeronautics, a pair of French brothers’ accomplishments in the 18th century should not be overlooked. According to Brittanica.com, in 1782, nearly a century before the Wright Brothers were even born, Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier discovered that heated air, when collected inside a large lightweight paper or fabric bag, caused the bag to rise into the air. Various successful experiments preceded the Montgolfiers’ flight on November 21, 1783. That flight, a 5.5 mile journey over Paris that lasted roughly 25 minutes, was the first manned untethered flight in history, firmly establishing the Montgolfier brothers as true pioneers in the field of aeronautics.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo.

They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need.

Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you.

All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them.

Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

Consumers who want to support local businesses should know that positive product reviews can be a great and effective way to do just that. According to Business2Community.com, 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.

In addition, customers are likely to spend 31 percent more on a business with “excellent” reviews, while 72 percent of consumers say that positive reviews make them trust local businesses more.

The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings the most. The good news for consumers is that product reviews need not be long to be effective.

ReviewTrackers notes that the average review is now roughly the size of a tweet and has gotten 65 percent shorter since 2010. That means it’s simple, quick and effective to support local businesses via online reviews of their products.

Dr. Shaikh has been honored with many awards including the ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation Merit Award, ASTRO Annual Meeting Travel Award, and ESMO European Lung Cancer Conference Travel Award.

He has been invited to give oral presentations at various international

conferences and has served as a co-author in numerous publications including research published in JAMA, JAMA Oncology, European Urology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics, and Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

Dr. Shaikh is a highly regarded leader in radiation oncology with eight years of practice including specialty training.

The directors of several food pantries in Suffolk County stated that the number of food insecure clients depending on their services has doubled over the past year, due to the pandemic.

“People are struggling because of unemployment, because of underemployment, because of the effects of COVID on the economy, “ said Marc Soto Executive Director of Pronto, a non-

profit organization located in Brentwood. “As of March, we have cut down on our intake services, and focused strictly on food distribution. We have fed close to anywhere between 9-14,000 clients on a monthly basis.”

Maidaya Maldonado, Operation Director for Adelante in Brentwood, said the non-profit community center’s food pantry usually serves about 200 food insecure people a

month, but over the past seven months that number has doubled. Maldonado added that there is a fear in the mostly Hispanic community to receive government assistance, so people rely more heavily on the food pantry.

“It’s not easy trying to find food or trying to find funds to cover all the needs that we have in our community,” she said.

“We are looking for some partnerships or grants that

can help our organization to try and meet our needs.”

New York City philanthropist and patron of the Heart of the Hamptons Food Pantry Jean Shafiroff agreed that Feeding America, a nonprofit organization that is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, estimated that in 2020, 50 million individuals in the United States would be food insecure and 17 millions of those are children.

“We’re looking for grant opportunities, donations, partnerships and all the things necessary to continue to meet the demand that we are experiencing.,” said Soto.

“This is a very challenging time.”
