Applications open today for Camp Oasis’s 2016 summer sessions. Camp Oasis is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s (CCFA) summer camp program that enriches the lives of children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis by providing them with a safe and supportive camp community. CCFA runs 12 week-long camp sessions across the country, attracting not only campers but also hundreds of volunteer counselors and medical professionals.

CCFA underwrites 65 percent of the cost of camp attendance, and scholarships are available for campers-in-need.

New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine residents are invited to apply to attend Camp Oasis of New York, which will take place August 16th through August 21st, 2016 at Camp Scatico in Elizaville, New York.

Disney Channel Liv and Maddie actor Benjamin King, a Crohn’s disease patient, stresses the importance of having an outlet like Camp Oasis for children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis to come together.

“Dealing with Crohn’s as an adult, I know how difficult it can be to cope with this disease. I can’t imagine how hard it must be for children to live with the debilitating pain

and uncertainty Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis can cause,” King said. “As a father, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits that summer camp has on children.

The existence of Camp Oasis to give children with Crohn’s and colitis a safe environment to come together and bond over a shared experience is tremendous.”

Schlosser’s photograph “Abandoned Wonderland” and Tejada’s drawing “Skewed Self Portrait” will be shown at this juried exhibition at the Student Art League gallery, now located in the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library

at LIU Post. The exhibition began on December 15th and will run until January 27th, when Schlosser and Tejada will be honored at a Post artists’ reception.

“I am excited and proud of Kara,” said Dan Figliozzi, who teaches AP drawing at East Islip. “She has continually impressed me with her highly saturated portraits. I am happy to know that her work will reach a larger audience by being featured in this show. I’m also excited

to see how her work will evolve this year, through the development of her concentration section of the AP drawing exam.”

Heather Toomey, who teaches AP 2D design, said, “Kristianna has been a photography student for three years, and is talented and skilled with Photoshop manipulations. It is an honor to be exhibited in a gallery and I am so proud of her for her continued accomplishments in photography.”

Three customer service calls.

Five “live” online chats. No fewer than four individual “incident” numbers to reference. And still, nearly six weeks later, no resolution.

Allow me to back up and fill in the blanks. A few days after Black Friday, I decided to use a credit obtained through a retailer-whoshall-not-be-named, coupled with several other coupons and promotions, to purchase a pair of sneakers (and socks) online.

No problem. Order processed, confirmed, waiting for shipment.

Over a week later, an e-mail stating that a portion of my order (aforementioned sneakers) had been cancelled, as they were suddenly “out of stock.” The socks, however, arrived all by their lonesome several days later.

Annoying? Sure. But, more to the point, what became of my credit which, thanks to the delay in processing, was now expired, having not been applied to my

now-cancelled purchase? One would assume I would be entitled to some sort of refund/coupon/ gift card in order to make future use of this sum, now $2.99 less thanks to the socks. One would also think that a store’s customer service representatives would be well versed in how to handle such a scenario, seeing as I couldn’t have been the first person to ever encounter such a cancelled order/ credit issue.

And yet, here we are, approaching the close of January, and still no sign of that “customer is always right” mantra. No, all I’ve gotten is the runaround, everything from “your gift card is in the mail” to “we can only apply the credit to a future online order, but the time frame has already expired” to “we’ll make an exception and e-mail you a new coupon code to use in-store or online” … none of which has occurred.

The best part – and I do mean that in the most facetious way possible – is that each attempt to

contact customer service has been met with an equally incompetent representative who, despite my relaying of the entire situation and the latest “incident” number provided, have no clue what I’m talking about, why I was given such an array of inaccurate information, or, quite frankly, what to do to rectify the issue. And this is their profession. Inspires all sorts of confidence, doesn’t it?

As I write this, a confirmation e-mail has arrived in my inbox, detailing my “inquiry” (which one?) and providing not one, but two, completely different incident numbers, one in the subject line, the other in the body of the rather nondescript form letter. There is also a customer service number to contact which, upon dialing, takes you on a whirlwind tour of automated extensions before settling into hold music for a solid 15 minutes, followed by dead silence as the call disconnects.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to shop online.

Ever. Again.

Wide-eyed angels and sceptered shepherds from Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park gifted us with a special School Mass just before the Christmas break. The assembly was complete with donkeys, camels, sheep, the Three Wise Men, Joseph, Mother Mary, and Baby Jesus.

Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and other local officials at a groundbreaking ceremony for the future Islip Firefighters Museum and Education Center.

The Firefighters Museum will be dedicated to celebrating the heritage of local volunteer firefighters through the collection, restoration and exhibition of historic and contemporary fire service memorabilia and equipment. This will be the third such museum on Long Island and the second

in Suffolk County.

“The Town of Islip is proud to support our local fire and EMS personnel and we’re thrilled that the dream of this museum will finally become a reality,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“Hopefully this museum will inspire future generations of Islip residents to serve their community in this way, ” she said.

Town Councilman Steve Flotteron said, “Our volunteer first responders are part of the fabric of the Islip community and this museum will give them the recognition they deserve.”

To date, organizers have raised $600,000 for the museum’s construction and are dedicated to ensuring that the museum is completely funded by private sources. In addition, several local businesses have donated supplies and labor, including Giaquinto Masonry, Inc., Astro Masonry & Supply, Riverhead Building Supply and the John C. Dunphy Foundation.

The museum will be located at 4 Courthouse Drive in Central Islip, near other family attractions, such as Bethpage Ballpark.

Winter Exhibition The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce the exhibition Brecknock Hall and Whaling - an exhibit of historic whaling artifacts associated with Brecknock Hall, Greenport. The exhibit will be held in the Society’s Reichert Family Center’s Cosden Price Gallery. It will be on display through February 5th, 2016 in the

gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold.

Grandson of a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, David Gelston Floyd (1802-1893) built historic home Brecknock Hall in Greenport. One of the many business ventures he invested in was the high yield but risky business of whaling. His three whaling ships sailed out of Greenport

harbor (1845- 1861) during the Golden Age of Whaling.

The exhibition Brecknock Hall and Whaling will be on view Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m., with additional hours upon inquiry. The gallery is located at 54127 Main Road in Southold.

In just over a month, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $8.5 million in low-interest disaster loans for 242 businesses and residents in the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy. The SBA on December 2nd reopened the disaster loan filing period for businesses and residents recovering from Superstorm Sandy.

SBA Approves Loans SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet.

“More than $8.5 million in low interest SBA disaster loans have been approved over the past month. This is a great start and we look forward to helping more small businesses, homeowners and renters with their long-term disaster recovery needs regardless of whether they have an existing disaster loan, need more funds, or are applying for an SBA disaster loan for the first time.”

The Recovery Improvements for Small Entities (RISE) After Disaster Act of 2015 gives

the SBA Administrator the authority to make disaster loans for areas affected by Superstorm Sandy for a period of one year. SBA has revised the disaster deadline for Superstorm Sandy in Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico.

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private non-profit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate.

Homeowners and renters

are eligible up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed personal property.

Interest rates are as low as 4 percent for businesses, 3 percent for non-profit organizations and 1.688 percent for homeowners and renters, with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Businesses and residents may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https:// disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

the locations of recovery centers and the loan application process can be obtained by calling the SBA Customer Service Center at 800.659.2955 (800.877.8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@ sba.gov.

Dr. Walsh is a highly experienced educator.

She earned her doctorate in school administration and instructional leadership from Saint John’s University in 2001 and is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Fellowship.

She also possesses a master’s degree in Library Science from Saint John’s and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Training from Fordham University.

She earned her BA in Child Study and Speech from Saint Joseph’s College, Brooklyn and earned additional credits in special education from Brooklyn College.

In addition to serving as

assistant superintendent for curriculum and assistant superintendent for elementary schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Dr. Walsh has extensive experience as teacher and administrator including recent service as assistant superintendent for K-12 curriculum and instruction for the Wappingers Central School District. Previously, she served as principal of the Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School, Valley Stream, New York.

For Dr. Walsh, the position with the Diocese of Rockville Centre and her return to Catholic education is the completion of a full circle. “For me it was like coming home.”

Said Dr. Walsh. “I’m rooted in Catholic education, both as student and as teacher, and I look forward to leading this outstanding team and these beautiful schools into the future.”

New Superintendent

On September 17th of this past year, Dr. Kathleen Walsh Ed.D. was selected as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Dr. Walsh, who has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Elementary Schools in the Diocese for the past two years steps in to the

role following Sr. Joanne Callahan’s 23 years of service to the schools and students of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Sr. Joanne Callahan will continue to share her expertise in a new position as Secretary of Education within the newly formed Education Corporation.

Dr. Kathleen Walsh

comes to us from an educational background rooted in the richness of Catholic education. She attended both Catholic elementary and high school and each degree pursued and achieved was done so in a Catholic institution of higher learning. Her background in education has spanned both the public and private sectors and she has been selfless in her desire to make a difference in the lives of the students, families and professionals she serves.

During her years in the field of education she has acted as a catalyst for change, initiating programs and projects that reach out to many and address the needs and interests of all students.

She recognizes and respects parents’ role as the first teachers of their children. Through working with others she has learned the value of collaboration and cooperation in order to accomplish the mission of the organization.

Dr. Walsh has a deep faith and puts that faith into action in serving and helping people experience the rewards of an education that is academically rigorous and spiritually grounded.

Her own spiritual journey began at St. Michael Parish in the East New York where Dr. Walsh grew up and worshiped with her family. The importance of faith, education, and family were some of her first lessons, both at home and in school. Today, Dr. Walsh and her husband Dennis are parishioners of the Parish of Saint Raphael, East Meadow.

Dr. Walsh’s first job in education was as an elementary classroom teacher for the Diocese of Brooklyn, in a parish school where she spent eight years. After moving to the New York City public schools Dr. Walsh began to take on other roles in education. “In the public schools I worked as a classroom teacher, I was
