East Islip High School’s varsity softball team continued its partnership with local nonprofit organization Christmas Magic in December, participating in a longstanding tradition of shopping for needy Long

Island children. This year, the students and softball coach Jason McGowan shopped at Target in Bay Shore for Long Island Against Domestic Violence, a shelter for children age 1-16 who suffered from domestic violence within

their residence. “I’ve been doing this every year since eighth grade,” said senior Lauren Crawford. “It feels great to know that I am making someone who is less fortunate than me have a better Christmas.”

in a section designated for black people. As a result of these incidents, King organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for more than a year but ultimately led to the end of racial segregation on all Montgomery public buses. Southern Christian Leadership Conference The Montgomery Bus Boycott made King a national figure, and he capitalized on that recognition to help establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC was a group of civil rights activists devoted to nonviolent protest. As SCLC president, a role he held until his death, King traveled the globe promoting nonviolent protest and civil rights. March on Washington King played an integral role in the organization and execution of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963. Estimates suggest as many as 300,000 people attended the march, which is considered a watershed moment for the civil rights movement that shone a light on the injustices faced by African Americans across the country. The march culminated with King delivering his most famous address, which is often referred to as his “‘I Have a Dream’ speech.” King delivered the speech while standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and shared his view of a future for the United States in which all people would have equal rights and opportunities. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a remarkable human being. Celebrations of his life can involve revisiting some of his more notable moments.

NO MORE GUTTER CLEANING, OR YOUR MONEY BACK – GUARANTEED

Each January, Americans honor the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929, King would grow up to become one of the most influential people of the 21st century. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in January each year. Taking time to learn about some of the many notable moments in King’s career is a great way to honor his legacy. Morehouse College After attending segregated public schools as a child, King was accepted into Morehouse College at the age of 15. Morehouse College was the alma mater of both King’s father, a pastor, and his maternal grandfather. While King studied medicine and law at Morehouse, perhaps the first major moment of his career in the ministry occurred while he was a college student. It was at Morehouse where King was mentored by the highly regarded theologian and racial equality advocate Dr. Benjamin Mays. Before his final year at Morehouse, King, now 18, chose to enter the ministry. Montgomery Bus Boycott Montgomery, Alabama, was a highly segregated city when King and his family relocated to Alabama in the 1950s. Shortly after the King family moved to Alabama, an incident involving a 15-yearold black schoolgirl in Montgomery who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man highlighted racial tensions in the city. Those tensions escalated further nine months later, when 42-year-old Rosa Parks rejected a bus driver’s plea that she give up her bus seat to a white passenger

MacArthur Airport Receives $1 Million Grant

MacArthur Airport will receive a $1 million grant as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) 2019 Awards. The grant funding will support continuing revitalization of Long Island MacArthur Airport’s Main Terminal. The grant supports improvements and modernization of the Main Terminal including the baggage claim area, as well as roof and vestibule repairs. “Upgrades to MacArthur Airport helps bring jobs and opportunity to the entire L.I. region,” said Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We will continue to grow and improve our airport, and work steadfastly with air carriers to provide more destinations and options for the local community,” she added. “Customers frequently evaluate their travel experience based upon airport amenities. Fast and efficient baggage claim is high on their list,” said Commissioner of Aviation Shelley LaRose-Arken. “In 2019, we upgraded runways, signage, the Fire Rescue Building, and the

overall travel experience at MacArthur Airport. We will be actively continuing this trend in the year ahead to provide an excellent customer experience and wellrun facility,” she added. “We are grateful to Governor Cuomo, and our Long Island leaders on the Regional Economic Development Council - Kevin Law, the President and CEO of the Long Island Association and Stuart Rabinowitz, the President of Hofstra University, for recognizing the value our airport provides to the region,” said Supervisor Carpenter. A panel of experts at USA Today’s 10Best Awards took notice of MacArthur Airport’s ease of use in nominating Long Island MacArthur Airport as one of the Best Small Airports in America. The Small Airport category includes airports under 10 million annual passengers. MacArthur Airport serves approximately 1.6 million passengers annually. “Our ongoing commitment to improving the airport helps us welcome visitors from outside the state looking to discover all Long Island has to offer.

This includes a hassle-free experience for business travelers and convenience for people taking holidays,” said Carpenter. “We are so grateful to serve our dynamic local community with service they’ve come to know and trust including American to Philadelphia; Southwest to Raleigh Durham, Baltimore/Washington and Florida, and Frontier to Florida, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, and Raleigh Durham, plus Miami coming in May, 2020,” she added. ABOUT LONG ISLAND MACARTHUR AIRPORT: Long Island MacArthur Airport customers enjoy flights on three major US domestic air carriers: American Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines. NEWEST EAGLE - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined with Islip Councilman John Cochrane, at the Eagle Court of Honor for the Councilman’s son, John C. Cochrane, V. The Eagle Scout project consisted of plantings around the submarine torpedo memorial at the Bay Shore Marina, a plaque honoring the USS Thresher and the USS Scorpion, and two benches, one dedicated to the memory of Daniel J. Kane and the other donated by the Bay Shore Lions Club. Daniel Kane was a long-time Bay Shore resident and owner of Bay Shore Beer and Soda. He was the beloved husband of Pearl Kane for over 40 years and a devoted father of 5. His eldest child, Marlene Johnston, is the aide to Councilman Cochrane. “This was a very proud moment for our family,” said Councilman Cochrane, a retired Navy Captain. “John MACARTHUR AIRPORT RECEIVES $1 MILLION GRANT - MacArthur Airport identified a project that enhances the community, and also pays tribute to the men will receive a $1 million grant as part of Governor Andrew M. The grant funding will support Phil Boyle; Assemblyman Andrew Raia; Suffolk County Legislator Steve Flotteron and continuing revitalization of Long Island MacArthur Airport’s Main Terminal. Councilman James O’Connor.

As December arrived in the East Islip School District, excited studentmusicians from the high school, middle school, and John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools demonstrated their skill in front of proud families in a scintillating

seasonal series of winter concert performances in the secondary school auditoriums. “Our winter concert series was filled with joy and jubilant cascades of sound, leaving us breathless from the hard work of our students and

Three Simple Tips (NAPSI)—Moving season is officially under way. The average person will move around 11 times, yet not many will rethink the moving process. Here are some tips to update your approach: • Restyle Your Move— Don’t repeat tired mistakes from your old home in your new one. Watch online moving makeover videos featuring TV designer and makeover expert Libby Langdon at CableMover.com. They demonstrate the right way

to pack household objects such as dishes, photos, rugs, books and plants and also explain how to arrange these objects in your new home to achieve a fresh designer look. • Free Online Guide— Since every move is unique, you should look for a guide like the CableMover guide that features timelines and checklists that can be customized to your needs. You can get information on moving supplies, design tips,

home security, phone and Internet service, moving with kids or pets or moving an elderly loved one. You can even get quotes from movers. • Moving Hacks—Staying connected is key to getting settled in. It’s easy to set up your Internet, TV and phone service in advance, with help from CableMover, so you’re already connected when you move in.

Three Easy Ways To Improve Your Life (NAPSI)—Your health, wealth and happiness may be improved if you heed these three helpful hints to ease and enhance your life: 1. Studies show money effectively motivates weight loss. So many individuals, couples, friends, families and employee

groups turn to HealthyWage.com—the leading provider of money-driven diet challenges. It provides cash prizes, social and expert support, tools, resources, and goal-setting and tracking technologies. Over 200,000 participants have collectively lost over 10 million

pounds, earning over $5 million in cash prizes for their pound-shedding success. 2. Those ready to retire can avoid financial strife with the Amazon. com-listed book “20 Retirement Decisions You Need to Make Right Now.” It covers key financial

decisions for the critical period transitioning from work to retirement. These decisions—many permanent—will affect your financial security for decades. 3. Excessive sweating—a serious medical condition called hyperhidrosis—affects approx-

imately 4.8 percent of the population and can lead to serious practical, social and emotional consequences. The International Hyperhidrosis Society provides support, resources and expert perspective to those struggling with this condition and others who hate to

sweat. Its website, www. SweatHelp.org, offers education; treatment, insurance, and clinical trial information; a physician finder; a useful award-winning blog; and sweat-management product discounts.
