festive Christmas carols and Hanukkah/Kwanzaathemed traditional material. At the secondary concerts, music from the popular film “Frozen” was a common theme.

“I am very proud of the musical growth of our students during the first part of the school year,” said Judith Fischer, an orchestra director at East Islip Middle School. “The eighth-grade orchestra

played a challenging and demanding series of pieces with varying styles and genres, while the seventhgrade orchestra made tremendous progress in technical ability as well as musicianship.”

“These young musicians worked hard to prepare for the concert and their performances were beautiful,” said band director Lynda Maniscalco of RCK’s event.

Each year the Bay Shore Middle School participates in the Macy’s Believe letter writing campaign.

For the past seven years, Macy’s has donated $1 to the Make-A-Wish foundation for each letter received, up to $1,000,000.

included trips to Disney, meetings with celebrities, and attending sports events.

The middle school students wrote their own letters to Santa, and even involved their friends and family members. After three weeks of writing, the students submitted 1,855 letters! Their act of kindness helped to raise almost $2,000 for the Make-A-Wish foundation.

The students in Mrs. Claudia Leon’s advisory were treated to a special holiday cookie party since they contributed 973 letters on their own.

During this holiday season, this event was a wonderful way to build teamwork, develop letter writing skills, and offer students the opportunity to help others.

This December, the annual All-State festival, attended by the top music students in New York, was held in Rochester. Ethan Day and Kristina Cockerill’s

compositions were selected as winners of the NYSSMA Electronic Music Composition Competition.

They participated in composer workshops and had their pieces played at a special concert. Kordell Hammond and Lindsey Tierney were both selected to participate in the NYSSMA All-State Mixed Chorus. Kordell received

the ultimate honor of being selected to sing a solo with the chorus.

Congratulations to these fine young musicians and their outstanding music teachers, Christopher Bilella and Edward Schaefer. Kudos to all the members of our music faculty who contributed to the success of these students.

Student Spotlight OBESITY IN AMERICA Something that many people argue and converse over has become a major issue in the United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic?

Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it?

Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you?

Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem?

Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix?

It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow.

This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning

about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through.

We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better.

According to a report released in January, 2014, by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), students graduating from Catholic high schools were nearly twice as likely as their public school counterparts to receive their college degree. In turn, degree recipients were ultimately more successful in securing a job and realizing higher earnings.

A National Center For Educational Statistics Study The study, reported on in the February issue of the CAPE Outlook newsletter from the Council for American Public Education, identified 10th grade students from public, private and Catholic high schools in 2002 to participate in the study. Ten years later, in 2012, the study re-visited with those same students.

By 2012 the students were in their midtwenties. The percentage of degree-recipients varied significantly by the type of high school attended, with 31.1 percent of

public school sophomores reaching a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 61.9 percent of sophomores from Catholic high schools and 57.1 percent of those from other private high schools.

The College Degree Is Just The Start Of The Advantages The survey went on to document subsequent advantages of higher salaries and lower unemployment. Students who didn’t seek or attain a degree in the 10 years of the survey faced an unemployment rate of 17 percent in 2012, with an additional 10 percent saying they were out of the labor force entirely (i.e., not looking for work). By contrast, only 4 percent of students who were able to attain a bachelor’s degree said they were unemployed.

The students who completed their degree programs also had higher incomes. One-third of the students with degrees reported salaries of $40,000 or more in 2011, compared with 21% of those who earned an Associate’s

Degree, and only 14% of the students who had not earned a degree.

The Catholic School Difference Although not part of the survey, the dramatically different results are cause for some speculation about ‘why’? Why would almost twice as many students from Catholic schools achieve their degree? While national Catholic school academic results regularly exceed their public counterparts by enough to claim some academic advantages…

Catholic schools don’t have twice-as-much information to impart to their students. That pretty much leaves character development, study habits and self-confidence, all intended by-products of a Catholic education, as the likely causes.

In Catholic school, from elementary school forward, the goal is to educate the whole child, in mind, in body and in spirit. If the results of this study are any gauge… It’s working!

Programming Trial

During the week of December 8th-12th, students at Bay Shore Middle School tried their hand at computer programming through the Hour of Code program.

The Hour of Code organized by Code.org is a non-profit organization including partners such as Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and the College Board. During the event, sixth-grade seminar, writing workshop, and ESL students joined more than 75,784,254 students, during 77,439 events in

more than 180 countries to develop logic, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills.

Following directions and learning from tutorials in their choice of language, the students worked together and learned how to use combine blocks of information to write programs, thus creating skating paths for Anna and Elsa of Disney’s Frozen.

They created snowflakes and other patterns as their learned about repeat and loop statements, pixels, and degrees of direction.

(Un)Deck The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over.

Just like that.

As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree

to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store.

‘Tis the season, indeed.

I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking.

And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did

when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space.

Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now.

Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

“This life drawing technique and process is challenging, but essential for further collegiate study in fine arts,” said Figliozzi.

“I honestly really loved it,” Dondero said. “The institute itself was amazing in person and the contest turned out to be a lot less nerve-racking then I initially thought it would be. I learned a lot about how I draw, how others draw and how unique and diverse everyone could be when creating art.”

Dondero plans on continuing to broaden his practice by taking courses such as AP art, electronic illustration and Drawing 2 in the coming years at East Islip. He plans to use the scholarship money to take drawing and painting classes at Huntington Fine Arts.

A fresh start to celebrate the New Year, the JaramilloMarquez family joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk to celebrate the beginning of construction on their future home in Bellport.

Demolition crews led the efforts, removing the previous abandoned, uninhabitable structure and preparing the land for the affordable home build.

“It is extremely gratifying to see another derelict property removed from the North Bellport community,” stated Legislator Kate Browning.

“Working in conjunction with the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity we have

kept dozens of properties from being auctioned off to speculators, and instead have helped families to become homeowners.”

The property was transferred to Habitat Suffolk by way of legislation from Suffolk County to the Town of Brookhaven and through a partnership and support of Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward P. Romaine.

“This blighted property will soon be transformed into a new home for the Jaramillo Marquez family thanks to the Town’s partnership with the County, Habitat for Humanity and Island Outreach,” Romaine said. “We will continue to

work together so home ownership can be a reality for working families, while at the same time improving the quality of life for the neighbors who have had to live near these eyesores for many years.”

For 25 years, Habitat Suffolk has empowered over 165 families to achieve their dreams of homeownership through our affordable housing program. Habitat Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 12-15 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a simple, decent and affordable place to live and call home.

On December 11th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC), held its annual holiday luncheon at The Milleridge Inn in Jericho to recognize the sponsors and top fundraisers for this year’s Walks to End Alzheimer’s. Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., announced that they raised more than $300,000 from these three Walks.

The luncheon also recognized the top individual fundraisers, top fundraising teams and top mini-Walk teams. Check-in for campers is at 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries.

Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend. During those weekends, the camp will be staffed by Camp PaQua-Tuck’s counselors and the camp nurse.
