Giving Back to the Community

S

tudents attending Mulligan Middle School enrolled in the Academy for Visual/Media Arts and the Academy for Forensics & Legal Sciences in Central Islip District wanted to “give back” to their community recently. They elected to hold a fundraiser throughout the holiday season, in which they collected $710 for presentation to the March of Dimes. Students hope to help find a cure for diseases that debilitate newborns.

Builder’s Breakfast Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is hosting the second annual Builder’s Breakfast on Thursday, April 21st, at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in Smithtown.

Partner families will be in attendance to inspire the audience with their challenges and success stories, and Habitat will premiere its new “Partnership” video.

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days.

I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself.

There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels.

Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring.

Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. Mentoring Partnership Expands

Now in its 22nd year of helping develop and support mentoring programs for over 57,000 young people, the Mentoring Partnerships of New York City and Long Island announce they will combine their organizations and expand their footprint to include most of New York State.

The newly formed, Mentor New York, will grow to support an additional 400 new programs and 8,000 young people over the course of 2016, with regions including Albany, Rockland County, Buffalo and Rochester as initial key target regions.

“Countless youth across New York are in need of additional caring and attentive adult role models in their lives to help them succeed in life, supporting the parents, grandparents and relatives already trying their best,” said Jean Cohen, Executive

Director, Mentor New York. “Mentor New York is very excited to now offer its free support and technical assistance to organizations and communities across the State, to assist in establishing and strengthening quality mentoring programs.”

Mentor New York will work closely with new target regions to help corporations, institutions, local associations, government agencies and other organizations from different sectors identify appropriate regional mentoring opportunities with established area mentoring partners. It will also work to deliver training programs to individuals through on-site workshops and webinars and expand its leadership to incorporate new representatives from other New York regions in all areas of community life – schools,

higher education, business, government, youth agencies, religious organizations and more.

“Studies show that youth involved in an effective mentoring program go on to graduate high school, form healthier, stronger relationships with parents, their teachers and peers, and experience an overall increase in their self-esteem,” continued Cohen. “It’s vital to engage and support those neighborhoods where we can make a difference in a youth’s life, and help eliminate chronic absenteeism – the number one cause of high school dropout occurrences.” According to the America’s Promise Alliance, more than 20% of high school students do not graduate on time and 5.8 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24, are neither in school or employed.

“After three years, it is estimated that Mentor New York will be providing mentoring support, education and tools to communities across most of New York State, covering 80% of the atrisk youths in the state,” said Linda Armyn, CoChair of the Leadership Council for Mentor New York and Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “I am very proud to be working with Mentor New York, a trusted, winning resource for quality mentoring programs, as it expands across the state.

Its proven, positive results will make a great impact for many.”

Mentor New York is the 2016 recipient of the America’s Promise Alliance GradNation grant, naming this year’s upcoming 2016 Mentor New York Conference

as the host to the 2016 GradNation Community Summit, with U.S. Senator Steve Israel as the Honorable Chair. The GradNation campaign was created by the America’s Promise Alliance to help increase graduation rates for youths. The 2016 GradNation Community Summit organized by Mentor New York, will be held in March on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, and will include a day of discussion on high school dropout rates and what steps need to be taken to increase graduation rates for young people. The America’s Promise Alliance was formed in 1997 and headed up by General & Mrs. Colin Powell, to help create successful conditions for all young people to succeed in school and life.

Island, now Mentor New York (MNY), is an affiliate of MENTOR, Inc. MNY helps individuals and groups from different sectors become involved in mentoring opportunities for youth.

She was born and raised in Nesconset, Long Island, and studied Creative Writing at Princeton University.

PEAK Performers music students gives young musicians a chance to demonstrate their skills, experience high-level musicianship and interact with other talented musicians, as preparation for the All-County ensemble performances that begin in fifth grade and continue through high school.

workshops, which explored African drumming, ukulele, folk dance, chorus, singing games, improvisation and musical theater.

“I loved this festival and came out of it with a big smile on my face,” said Jantz. “It made me feel special because I got to Representatives from 26 sing with kids from all over Suffolk County,” added colleges and universities across the country recently Johnson. visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and were impressed with what they saw. More than 100 teen artists met with the reps at this year’s College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression.

“After the event, a number of college representatives called and emailed saying how impressed they were by our students’ talent and professionalism,” explained LIHSA Guidance Counselor Melissa Stencel.

“They were equally impressed by how well prepared the students were for the college application process.”

“Hosting the annual College Fair provides our students with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the programs of more than 25 colleges, universities and conservatories,” said Jack Lenson, Interim Principal of LIHSA. “This helps students to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications. The Fair also gives college representatives an opportunity to see our students perform and to affirm that our students will make substantial contributions to their programs.”

At LIHSA, college prep is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They

are guided through the process step-by-step by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings.

Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” Ms. Stencel said of the Fair. “They are able to network with colleges on their home turf, allowing the representatives to see where they perfect their craft. It can be overwhelming at first, but our artists rose to the challenge. Student response was fantastic they really impressed the representatives.”

The costumed elf in question, played by PTA President Cheryl Pepe,

provided each student with a special T-shirt emblazoned with the school’s new logo, “Do the Right Thing,” designed by third-grader Gianna Trager.

The students then

enjoyed a holiday singalong led by Principal Aileen O’Rourke and music teachers Jaime DiMaria, Ron Fox and James Santoro.

Christmas Magic East Islip High School’s varsity softball team and coach Jason McGowan met up at a local Target store before the holidays to participate in the team’s annual shopping extravaganza for the nonprofit Christmas Magic program, coordinated

by Hauppauge attorney Charlie Russo.

In conjunction with the Amityville High School WAC PAC, a student leadership program coordinated by McGowan, teens shopped for 84 underprivileged children who attend a daycare center in Middle Island.

Each athlete, shopping for two to three children, was given a $100 bill and a

handwritten “Dear Santa” list filled with clothing, toys and electronics.

“I loved shopping for my little girl,” said student Ashley Benvengo.

“It felt good knowing that she woke up Christmas morning and had a bunch of toys.”

Seniors Alexa Mattera and William Reed were recently named as East Islip High School winners of the 2015-2016 Suffolk Zone Awards, presented annually to the top male and female physical education students in each high school’s graduating class.

Mattera and Reed were honored by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and

Dance at a December 2nd awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge.

This school year, 58 high schools in the county were represented at the Suffolk Zone awards and 116 award recipients were chosen.

The students were selected for contributing strongly to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the school. Among the criteria for the award are earning an A average or

Setting the Tone above 90 in high school physical education classes, achieving an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year, demonstrating outstanding character and leadership qualities and being a role model for good health and physical fitness.

“Alexa and Will are true leaders in their class and have made an impact,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.

McKenna and Reilly were recognized by Kania School of Management Associate Dean Murli Rajan at a December 2nd ceremony at the university’s Weinberg Memorial Library, hosted by the school’s highest ranking professors.

McKenna spoke about being inspired by Reilly and presented him with the award on behalf of the university.

“It was truly a moving moment for me after Shannon finished her speech about how I have impacted her both in the classroom and in life,” said Reilly. “This is a great honor and one that I will cherish always. I received this award for inspiring Shannon, but I believe it

is the other way around.

It is the students – and certainly a student-athlete like Shannon – who inspire me.”

McKenna, an accounting major with a minor in mathematics, serves as the vice president of Scranton’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee, as well as participates in the Business Club and the Society of Accounting Students. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta (the freshman honor society) and Omega Beta Sigma (the women’s business honor society). In 2014, she received Scranton’s Frank O’Hara medal, awarded to the first, second and third-year students with the highest grade point averages in each Scranton undergraduate college.

Islip High School graduate and current University of Scranton student Shannon McKenna and Islip teacher Mike Reilly were recently honored with the Rose Kelly Award from the university’s Kania School of Management.

The award was established by Scranton alumnus Joseph Wineburgh to link the efforts of educators to the achievements of college students. It is presented jointly to a student in each of the three Scranton undergraduate colleges who has demonstrated exemplary achievement in both academics and general campus involvement, and to the teacher who the student recognizes as having had a great impact

2014 preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Dymek and Saperstein finished among the top 5 percent nationwide of the more than 1.5 million students who took part in

the competition as juniors.

“We are very proud of Larry and Mackenzie’s accomplishments and wish them nothing but success in the future,” said counselor Kerri Friend.

Honoring the Memory The East Islip Middle School eighth-grade Leaders Club held its second annual pet toy drive last month, honoring the memory of teacher Wendy Rauh and successfully providing for the Islip Animal Shelter and Adopta-Pet Center.

“Our beloved teacher,

colleague and friend, Wendy Rauh, had two dogs she loved dearly,” said Leaders Club adviser Diane Wahrenburg regarding the genesis of the drive. “The school community really stepped up again this year by donating pet food, toys and money to the pets in need at the shelter.”

Leaders Club members, their families and several teachers met at the shelter on December 12th to pay tribute to Rauh, donate the items and visit the animals. Capping off the ceremony, eighth-grader Faith Henderson shared a heartwarming story about Rauh with the group.

Elective Expo East Islip High School recently held its first “Elective Expo” in the school cafeteria, providing students in grades 8-12 an opportunity to learn about the different elective classes offered by the high school.

Teachers and students manned tables, and video production students, under the supervision of teacher James Connell, created a video to showcase each of the electives and demonstrate what students learn and do in these courses.

The school’s vaunted Career Academy program

was also featured, and parents and students who were interested in learning more about the program were able to speak with Career Academy teachers and students who are currently enrolled in the academies.

The Elective Expo evening was the culmination of meetings held throughout the current school year by the newly formed Career Academy Committee, led by Principal William Brennen and Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. The committee was created

by Alise Becker-Santa,

the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel, for the purpose of bringing East Islip’s elective courses and the Career Academies to the forefront.

“Parents and students walked around and were able to make better educational decisions as to what classes the students would like to enroll in for the next school year,” said Malinowitzer. “The teachers were delighted to take part in the event and are already looking forward to planning next year’s Elective Expo.”

Finding Neverland East Islip High School seniors from Linda Leach’s English 12 and Carene Mahoney’s AP English classes took a recent field trip to New York City to see “Finding Neverland” on Broadway.

Based on the Academy Award-winning film of the same name, the musical

was brought to life by the team behind “Shakespeare in Love,” “Chicago” and “Pippin. ” “The play reveals the inspiration behind J.M. Barrie’s classic story of ‘Peter Pan,’ depicting the struggle of the writing, editing and staging of the play through both story

and song,” said Mahoney.

While visiting Manhattan, the students were also able to take in some of the city’s holiday sights, from the Macy’s “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus” display to Christmas trees at Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center.

40 Under 40 Selected Stony Brook University has named the members of its second annual 40 Under Forty alumni recognition program. The University will celebrate these early career high achievers at an awards event on Tuesday, January 26th, at The Edison Ballroom in New York City.

Selected from a diverse nominee pool of Stony Brook graduates, the honorees represent the University’s most creative and bold young professionals in science, technology, engineering, and medicine, as well as business, sports, and the arts, from groundbreaking researchers and tech innovators, to healthcare advocates and civic heroes.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that grant applications for local organizations serving Suffolk County veterans are now available. The approximately $160,000 of net proceeds generated from the Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon will be disbursed to local not-for-profit organizations through a grant application process directed by the Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee.

“I am extremely proud of what the inaugural event accomplished as we will be able to make a significant impact to veterans in our local communities,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

“I encourage all eligible nonprofit organizations

to apply for grant funding through this program so we will be able to continue to assist our heroes who live in Suffolk County.”

The Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon attracted more than 3,500 runners from 25 states and four countries. The event was one of six races that was part of the Suffolk County Veterans Running Series that took place throughout the region in 2015.
