PEDIATRIC URGENT CARE

Four East Islip High School student-musicians – Kurte Eide, Richard Hughes, Michael Krebs and Evan Mauner – were awarded All-State honors by the New York State School Music Association, and participated in at the NYSSMA Winter Conference at the Eastman Theater in Rochester.

At the All-State concert, held on December 4th, Eide (jazz trombone) and Mauner (trumpet) performed with the All-State Instrumental Jazz Ensemble, Hughes (trumpet) played with the All-State Wind Ensemble, and Krebs (bass) sang in the All-State Mixed Chorus.

Additionally, 18 students from East Islip were named All-County musicians, and participated in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education’s All-County Festival concerts, held on November 18th at Northport High School.

Zachary Schurman played alto saxophone with the All-County Band under the direction of Dr. James Tapia.

Representing East Islip in the two choral ensembles were Brittney Berke, Kendra Canavan and Sabrina Firneno in the All-County Women’s Chorus and Roy Anderson, Amanda Baranek, Sarah Bloom, Krebs, Vincenzo Mediate and Sara Rapuzzi in the All-County Mixed Chorus.

Selections included original compositions by Women’s Chorus Director Joan Szymko as well as a mix of contemporary and classical pieces.

It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really.

I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has.

Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for.

From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I

delighted in broadening my horizons.

College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them.

Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me.

Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few

months back.

As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved.

Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo.

I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point.

And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Shore has been the best Cross-Country program in Suffolk County since girls started running Cross-Country in the late 1970’s. She has a 5K best of 18:08.43. Bridget has a GPA of 93, is involved with Athletes Helping Athletes, has been a two year captain and led Bay Shore Girls Cross-Country to the League 3 Championship and Division 2 Championship.

Bridget is an outstanding young lady, who will move on and compete at Elon University in North Carolina on a track scholarship.

Sydney Carpenter is only a freshman, but has made a huge impact on the running scene, not only at Bay Shore but also on Long Island. Sydney has been All-League and All-Division in 2015 and 2016, in addition to AllCounty, USA Track & Field All-Long Island and AllNortheast in 2016. She was the Individual Champ in the Freshman CrossCountry Championships in 2015 and broke the Bay Shore eighth grade school record (Laura Cummings, 15:50.0) for the 2.5 mile course at Van Cortlandt Park, with a blazing 15:48.6. Since Sydney has been on the team, they have won two League and Division Championships, and posted an 11-0 record.

The team was also ranked number 2 on Long Island, number 2 in Suffolk County and number 10 in New York State, with Sydney as itsr second best runner. Her best 5k time is 19:07.38.

Holiday Sing-a-long Students and staff at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School joined together for a holiday sing-along on December 23rd, with various students called up to the microphone to help lead

the rest of the school in singing each holiday tune.

Staff members entertained the students during “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” dancing and holding up a poster for each day, while some staff

members surprised the whole school by picking up instruments and playing “Feliz Navidad.”

Two “elves” came to visit during the sing-along, giving a little gift to the students.

A TOUCHDOWN FOR BAY SHORE - On December 17th, 2016, the New York Jets, the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program and the National Dairy Council recognized Bay Shore Middle School. During an on-field ceremony, the school was presented with a check for $10,000 to help expand the availability of grab-and-go breakfast kiosks in the school. Board of Education President Andrew A. Arcuri, Vice President Guy Leggio, Executive Director of Human Resources Lisa Giacoia and Food Service Director Jeanine Quicker represented the district.

SUBURBAN DIVERSITY - Bay Shore High School junior Kayla Dixon was awarded 3rd place in the Celebration of Suburban Diversity 2016 Student Essay Contest. Senior Mattea Gravina was recognized with an Honorable Mention. The contest, created by the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, looks for students to demonstrate a knowledge and keen interpretation of diversity issues facing Long Island for future generations. The award is accompanied by a college scholarship.

Baking on Display

The smell of baking cookies emanated throughout many households in the Bay Shore community this week as members of the National Junior Honor Society from Bay Shore Middle School prepared a variety of the delicious treats.

Their efforts were on display at the

annual Historical Society Snowflake Bake sale in early December.

Students toted boxes, bags and carefully wrapped trays of goodies into the Middle School to help an organization that does so much for the community.

Member John West Jr. carried a box of beautifully wrapped cookies into the

building, fresh off his bus.

“I can bring the cookies right into the office?” he asked, his face beaming with pride.

The baking event is another example of the many ways our Middle School students have been giving back to their school and community.

GRANT APPRECIATION - Recently, students from Bay Shore High School met with Senator Phil Boyle to thank him for providing a grant that allowed the students to study composite materials. The students used the grant to attend a program through Vaughn College. The program consisted of 2 full-day sessions and shorter after school sessions held at the Composite Prototyping Center. Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions.

The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the

holiday celebrations as imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience.

“Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner.

“Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time

to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.”

During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens.

Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in

countless preservation projects. The dinner also featured a presentation by guest speaker Michael Devonshire, a renowned architectural conservator with more than 25 years of experience in the field of historic preservation.

“The holiday season is a magical time at the Old Westbury Gardens, and we were proud to host such an illustrious group this year for our Annual December Dinner,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. “This year’s event

was incredibly successful, as we were able to raise enough funds to help support several exciting preservation initiatives for 2017. We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces and some new ones at our premier fundraising event.”

Through the incredible generosity of distinguished guests, Old Westbury Gardens was successfully able to raise enough funds to support significant renovation projects to preserve the Westbury House’s unique

STEAMy Snowball Fight On the first day of the winter season, students in Jennifer Giordano’s firstgrade class at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School worked on a STEM project with “snowballs.”

The task entailed designing, building and attempting to knock down snow forts built from

marshmallows. Students were given specific materials and then had to attempt the challenge.

Their goal was to build a structure that would protect its resident from a “snowball” assault by a neighboring group. They observed pictures of snow forts and then worked

together to plan and build their own successful structure.

“The children enjoyed the entire project, but their favorite part was getting to throw jumbosized marshmallows at the opposing group’s fort,” said Giordano.
