thrilled to welcome back the United States Air Force Thunderbirds to Long Island for their fourth headlining appearance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach,” said George Gorman, Deputy Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The United States Air Force Thunderbirds last headlined the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach in 2009 and were scheduled to appear again in 2013, but were forced to cancel due to government sequester budget cuts. “We welcome the team back to Long Island with great enthusiasm,” continued Gorman.

“Over 360,000 spectators chose the Bethpage Air Show as their Memorial Day holiday weekend destination in 2009, when the Thunderbirds last visited. We are confident that their return to Long

Island in 2015 will draw in a sizeable crowd as well,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Bethpage.

“Memorial Day weekend is an important time to honor the men and women of our country’s military, which is exactly what the Thunderbirds demonstration squadron is all about – to honor and share the story of our nation’s military who have served and currently serve at locations around the world,” Armyn continued.

The Thunderbirds were formed in 1953, and since have been charged with demonstrating the professionalism of Airmen and the capabilities of modern airpower. Their performance at the Bethpage Air Show will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines.

A holiday wish came true for Olabisi, Otega and Tobor Ogunnoiki when the family recently celebrated the wall raising of their dream home in Connetquot with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk on December 18th.

Habitat staff, volunteers and students from Connetquot High School, which marks the school’s 14th year of participation with Habitat Suffolk’s Student Build program, along with representatives from house sponsors Optimum and Thrivent Financial, their 12th house sponsorship through the Thrivent Builds partnership, as well as local leaders, worked feverishly constructing the first walls of the Ogunnoiki’s new home.

Olabisi, a single mother of the two boys, originally hails from West Africa and has dedicated her life to working with people with

developmental disabilities.

She has completed nursing school and is preparing for the board exams to continue her career in healthcare.

“Being a single working mother with limited income, as well as a student with no family members around to support or assist, we find ourselves moving from place to place,” Olabisi said. “From living in one room with two active boys to living in a tiny one-anda-half bedroom basement apartment we were grateful to have our own place.”

Otega, 18, is a freshman in college and Tobor, 15, is an honors student and a sophomore in high school.

They are active members and regular volunteers for the youth department in their church and in the community.

“The introduction to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk came just in time,

as God provided for our situation,” Olabisi added.

“The most exciting moment was being approved and hearing the news of where our house would be built, a place we could sit back and count our many blessings through the great vision and mission of Habitat for Humanity. This is overwhelming for us and we are so thankful.”

For 25 years, Habitat Suffolk has empowered over 165 families to achieve their dreams of homeownership through our affordable housing program. Habitat Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 12-15 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a simple, decent and affordable place to live and call home.

On The Horizon By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column.

In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be.

Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and

at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones.

GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa.

We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals.

The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS).

FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine.

I enjoyed this volunteer effort.

Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need.

I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations.

The East Islip Middle School Holiday Brass Ensemble has been busy spreading holiday cheer, starting on December 5th when they kicked off the season with a performance at the East Islip Fire Department’s tree lighting ceremony.

The Holiday Brass subsequently performed in the ballroom of the Islip Art Museum’s Brookwood Hall for the annual Orphan Tree Lighting.

John Peter D’Ambrosio successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on September 4th, 2014, officially making him the 56th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. John’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2015, starting at 12:00 Noon at Trinity Lutheran Church, 111 Nassau Avenue in Islip.

John D’Ambrosio was a member of Troop 151, under the direction of Scoutmasters Bob Sgroi and John’s Father, Peter D’Ambrosio and currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, with Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” John has served both troops as a

Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Den Chief for a Cub Scout Pack, Troop Guide and Senior Patrol Leader.

John is also a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. He has also earned the BSA World Conservation Award. He has also successfully completed the BSA National Youth Leadership Training.

John has had many unique Scouting experiences, including multiple Suffolk County Council and Sagtikos District Camporees, weekend campouts, and the 2013 National Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit Reserve in West Virginia.

To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community.John has actually earned a total of 35 merit badges. The Service Project that John conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the wheelchair accessible walkway and patio through a butterfly garden at the South Shore Nature Center in East Islip.

As John reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “I feel that my life has been molded by my many life experiences – especially Scouting. I am undecided about my future, but will include some type of leadership role.

My career choices are leading towards political science, homeland security, public relations, or the armed forces.

Computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science. We live in a world surrounded by technology.

We know that whatever field our students choose to pursue, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works.

That is why Gardiner Manor School joined the

largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code beginning on December 8th through December 14th. For this year’s Hour of Code Campaign, Mrs. Cox offered each student an opportunity to participate in a computer science programming class.

He has also been a member of student government since 6th grade and in the Board Game and Drama Clubs, and a member of the Chorus since 4th grade and in the Drama Club. He has also served on the Stage Crew in the 11th grade and ongoing with the class float committee.

He has also been on Islip Little League Teams, Suffolk Flag Football League, the Shaolin Self Defense Centers where he earned the rank of Brown Belt Second Degree and has run in several 5K races, including the Wounded Warrior Run. Community service has been important to John as he has worked at the St. Mark’s Church thrift shop, and Church spaghetti dinners and pancake fundraisers. John has also been involved with beach cleanup projects and the Islip Christmas Parades. He has also worked on many Eagle Service Projects within Troops 151 and 205.

John is also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip, where he was baptized and received his Holy Communion and Confirmation.

John is the son of Christine and Peter D’Ambrosio of Islip, and brother to Eric D’Ambrosio.

Making An Impact Islip High School seniors and physical education role models William Killeen and Juliana Williams have been chosen as the school’s 2014 recipients of the Suffolk Zone Award.

The students were selected by Islip’s physical education staff and recognized by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a dinner held at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge on December 3rd.

The Suffolk Zone Award is presented annually to the top male and female physical education students in that year’s graduating class, those who best contribute to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the

school. Criteria include earning an A average or above 90 in high school physical education classes, achieving an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year, demonstrating outstanding character and leadership qualities, and being a role model for good health and physical fitness.

A true leader in physical education class, Killeen is a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Athletes Helping Athletes and Habitat for Humanity.

He cited competing against his physical education teacher in badminton as his most memorable physical education experience.

Undecided in his choice of college, the senior plans on studying business next fall while continuing to play lacrosse or football.

Throughout her high school career, Williams has maintained a 100 average in physical education.

She is a member of the National Foreign Language Honor Society, Athletes Helping Athletes, Soul Club and Interact Club, and attended the National Youth Leadership forum in 2014. Her favorite physical education experience is including underclassmen in activities to assist them in becoming active members of the class.

She has not decided on a college yet, but plans to major in either biology or pre-med next fall.

“Juliana and William have both gone above and beyond in the area of physical education,” said Athletic Director Bob Panariello. “I thank both of them for their impact at Islip High School.”

Peace Light Distribution The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and concert featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 14th. Reverend Joseph Davanzo welcomed everyone.

Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Messiah portion featured a full orchestra and soloists. The service concluded with the Hallelujah Chorus.

Refreshments and fellowship followed.

The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need.

Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent

years it has also been brought to the United States.

The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities

Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and is even being brought to Mexico and South America.

In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings.
