And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse.

As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us.

May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward.

That, in itself, is a resolution everyone can get behind.

More than 40 students from East Islip High School’s Career Academies recently participated in another Driven to Give fundraiser, partnering with teachers and Bright Bay Lincoln dealership of Bay Shore to provide parents, friends and community members with a chance to test-drive a brand-new Lincoln automobile in East Islip’s Early Childhood Center parking lot. For every person 18 years

of age or older with a valid driver’s license who stopped to take a test drive, Bright Bay Lincoln donated $20 to the Career Academy program.

“The students once again did an excellent job working together and making sure that every car had a driver, and throughout the four hours, people from all over stopped by to test a vehicle,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the school’s director of careers and

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children.

This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more.

The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food.

This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers.

They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children.

During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless.

BUILDING CELLS - Recently, scholars in Miss Daoud’s 4th grade class at Gardiner Manor School created 3-D animal cell models as part of their “Cells” unit in science.

Each cell was made using plastic plates, frosting and different kinds of candy to represent the different parts of the cell, which the scholars labeled. The students had so much fun creating the models! “This is the only time I’ve been allowed to play with my food, but it’s okay because I’m learning,” said scholar Eric.

If you worked on-site at the lab for 250 workdays between 1947 and 1993 for Associated Universities, the AEC/DOE, or a subcontractor, or were a researcher living on-site at Brookhaven National Lab, and were later diagnosed with one of 23 specified types of cancer, I will help you, or direct survivors, get a six figure entitlement award. Awards range from $150,000 to $400,000, and include worker medical benefits, including home health care. This is a taxpayer funded entitlement for DOE workers/survivors. It involves no liability to any employer and is not a lawsuit.

Since 2007 I’ve done this nationally for 3,000 sick DOE workers or their survivors. I have helped more than half of the 928 paid BNL families receive their cancer awards.
