Powderpuff Event Raises Money For Cancer Research

High School East Leadership raised $750 for the Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund on Thursday, November 4 while having fun sponsoring a series of powderpuff football games.

Teams were divided by class--seniors, juniors and sophomores and competed in 6-on-6 football while classmates served as coaches and officials.

The teams paid an entry fee which served as a

donation to support breast cancer research.

High School East Leadership advisor Morgan Tavis said this is an annual event full of school spirit.

Holiday Harmonies From Festive Flutes!

The Long Island Flute Club is pleased to continue its tradition of presenting its annual Holiday Concerts. Once again the Flute Club will be presenting two concerts, one at each end of the Long Island community. Both concerts will feature a variety of seasonal classics that are guaranteed to put you in the spirit of the season. The sixteenmember flute ensemble will feature all members of the flute family from piccolo to bass flute. The ensemble, directed by Lauren Osnato will play a variety of festive classics such as “The Nutcracker Suite” and “Let it Snow” to “Sleigh Ride” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It is a holiday celebration for children of all ages!

The Suffolk County Concert will be Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the United

Methodist Church of Lake Ronkonkoma. This will be the thirteenth time the Long Island Flute Club will present a holiday concert at this charming church in Lake Ronkonkoma.

The picturesque church is located at 792 Hawkins Avenue, in Lake Grove. The concert is free of charge. In the spirit of the holiday season, they will be taking up a collection to donate to the ALS Association.

The Nassau County Concert will be Sunday, December 11, 2022, at 2:00 pm in the Red Ballroom of Old Westbury Gardens.

The Gold Coast-era Mansion will be decorated for the holidays, and there will even be an appearance from Santa Claus himself. The concert is free with admission to Old Westbury Gardens.

The Holiday Flute Choir is made up of members of the Long Island Flute Club. The group is a mixture of

players of all ages who play at an advanced level. They are professional players, teachers, and students who all love the flute and enjoy sharing music. On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”

Those were the words of Ukrainian screenwriter and teacher, Oksana Artemenko as she spoke to Great Hollow Middle School seventh and eighth graders on Wednesday Nov, 23rd.

Ms. Artemenko was able to speak to Ms. Fisk’s social studies classes via google meet, just hours after she

said missiles struck Ukraine causing her home to lose electricity.

Ms. Artemenko discussed a variety of topics about Ukrainian culture and society and shared her experiences navigating life during the ongoing war.

Ms. Fisk began a friendship with Ms. Artemenko this past summer when she began teaching her the

English language as part of the ENGin volunteer organization.

Ms. Artemenko and other Ukrainian citizens had been unable to attend language classes in Ukraine due to the ongoing war.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta Holds Winter Coat Drive With SMM Advertising And RSVP

For several years, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has been working with Smithtown based SMM Advertising and the Retired Senior Volunteer Programs (RSVP) to conduct a winter coat drive to benefit the residents of Suffolk County who are in need of warm winter clothing. They are collecting gently used or new coats, jackets, hats, gloves,

mittens and new socks for infants, children, teens and adult men and women.

“As people prepare for the winter and clean out their closets or plan to give a new coat as a holiday gift, it is important for all of us to help our fellow neighbors who need warm coats by contributing to this event,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Donations of coats and other outerwear may be dropped off at Legislator Trotta’s district office, located at 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, (Blue Door) in Smithtown from 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday. Shopping is foremost on the minds of many people come the holiday season. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making holiday shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. However, experiential gifts also merit consideration. Experiential

gifts are those that focus on experiences rather than items. These can include anything from a horseback riding adventure to a spa day to concert tickets to getting behind the wheel of a race car. Experiential gifts can be tailored to people’s interests. A study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed people tend to realize greater well-

being from life experiences and consider them to be a better way to spend their money. Overall satisfaction tends to be greater with gifted experiences than with material things. Furthermore, the Harris Group found that 72 percent of millennials actually want to spend more money on experiences rather than things.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County’s Annual Holiday Lightshow

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and County Executive Steve Bellone are excited to announce the Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be returning to Smith Point County Park in Shirley for the 19th consecutive year. This year, the drive-thru event which features more than a mile of illuminated holidaythemed displays, will take place through December 30th. In addition to the

annual drive-thru holiday attraction, new to this year’s event, GSSC will also create an incredible walk-through Enchanted Forest and Holiday Village featuring 200ft light displays, photos with Santa, a picnic area for s’mores, music, and games at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long

Island, the seasonal event serves as an important fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering Girl Scout experience.

“The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show is an event we look forward to every year, and we are delighted to bring it back for families across Long Island to enjoy this holiday season,”

added 5 exhibits that were conceptualized by local, award-winning Girl Scouts.

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

Children & Youth: Their Children & Youth services work deeply with children who are victims of child abuse and neglect or who are involved in the foster care system or child trafficking. They provide supervised visitation between noncustodial parents and their children, promote child passenger safety and offer mentors for at-risk youth.

Family & Community: EAC Network’s Family and Community programs help individuals pay bills, resolve family and business conflicts and navigate through obstacles that hinder selfsufficiency.

Senior & Nutrition Services: EAC Network is a provider of Meals on Wheels. They act as guardians for seniors, as well as mentally and/or physically incapacitated individuals, who are unable to manage aspects of daily life on their own. Their senior centers provide warm meals, exercise and social interaction to local seniors. They also offer technology classes as well as trained companions to relieve caregivers.

Vocational Services: Their Vocational Services offer a variety of programs that provide participants with skills to obtain and retain employment, particularly with at-risk populations.

Behavioral Health & Criminal Justice Services: They offer Behavioral Health programs that work in tandem with the criminal justice system to help

individuals

issues obtain treatment. They also offer programs for Anger Management, Community Service and educational intervention for domestic violence offenders, and more.

Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they serve over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County!

Benefits Long Island Food Banks

Stop & Shop donated 2,000 Thanksgiving turkeys to Island Harvest and Long Island Cares during the first intermission when the New York Islanders host the Calgary Flames at UBS Arena in Elmont. The Food Bank Presidents participated in the Stop & Shop Shoot-Out –attempting a center ice shot to secure their donations.

The donation of turkeys is part of Stop & Shop’s annual Turkey Express program which provides

more than 25,000 turkeys to hunger relief organizations across the supermarket’s footprint.

As the official supermarket of the Islanders, Stop & Shop’s donation spotlights the increased need the Food Banks are facing going into the holiday season: Island Harvest Food Bank expects to collect and distribute 14,500 turkeys and tens of thousands of pounds of trimmings necessary to complete a holiday-style meal for Long

Islanders coping with food insecurity.

Island Harvest Food Bank serves approximately 300,000 families at various times during the year.

Last year the food bank supplemented 18 million meals for Long Islanders struggling with food insecurity.

Across Long Island, more than 148,000 students are qualified to receive free or reduced-price school meals.

Annual Holiday Lightshow

Bayport, in 2016, the fundraising event has been held at Smith Point County Park. The light displays are assembled and built-in part, by GSSC staff and dedicated volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association.

Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs as well as provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program.

Lights On A Christmas Tree

Lights on a Christmas tree may seem like a relatively recent phenomenon, but people who can’t wait to deck the halls each December may be surprised to learn that this beloved tradition dates all the way back to the late nineteenth century.

Edward Johnson, a friend and colleague of Thomas Edison, introduced

holiday light bulbs in 1882. Prior to that, candles were lit on trees and families would briefly gaze at this awe-inspiring bit of holiday decor before the candles were quickly extinguished.

Johnson is credited with being the first to suggest light bulbs, which were invented by his friend Edison, be used to light trees in place of candles.

While many were impressed by Johnson’s eight-bulb holiday display, it remained a novelty until the 1920s, when preassembled lights became more accessible. Since then, Christmas tree lights have taken hold as a must-have piece of holiday decor in households across the globe.
