The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. the work of other artists, painting and sketching countless pictures. “While I respect forms of abstract art, representational art is my preference. My appreciation of classical art has inspired me to copy old masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Greuze and Vouet. These efforts have helped a great deal in my understanding of painting and applying it to my current work. I paint in oils on canvas or panel. My goals are to achieve realistic effects in portrait, landscape or still life and for the painting to engage the viewer.” Frank, born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, was educated at SUNY Farmingdale, N.Y. After serving as a U.S. Army Paratrooper in the 2 /509th Airborne Infantry, he pursued a career in the Aerospace industry for Grumman Aircraft and later Northrop Grumman. Working and raising a family did not leave much time for art. Frank, now retired has more time for art and paints for fun and relaxation. His current focus is on portrait and figurative work, but also enjoys landscape and plein air painting. He has worked in all mediums, but oil paint is his favorite and he prefers realism over all other styles. Frank has exhibited in juried and group shows across long Island. JAMES ELEMENTARY THANKS VETERANS - First grade students at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District learned all about the meaning of Veterans Day, the branches of the military and how the military keeps them safe. The students watched a video and brainstormed nonfiction writing ideas about Veterans Day. They also wrote handmade cards to the local veterans, thanking them for their service. PASSIONATE FOR PURPLE - Accompsett Middle School student Sophia Carpenter took the initiative to educate her classmates and raise awareness for epilepsy on Nov. 4, which is Epilepsy Awareness Day. Carpenter, who has lived with epilepsy since the age of 5, is a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club at the school, under the advisement of Valerie Gompers and Taylor Walsh. Working together, they created a short public service announcement for the students of Accompsett. Students and staff at Accompsett Middle School wore purple to raise awareness. CONNECTING WITH LOCAL VETERANS - As a way to thank local veterans for their service, the members of the National Junior Honor Society from Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held a veterans day reception in their cafeteria on Nov. 4. Students used the opportunity to connect with the veterans, some of whom were family members and friends. They spent the afternoon enjoying each other’s company, playing games and sharing stories. Homecoming Celebrations Smithtown High School East’s homecoming celebrations was a true community event with an old-school feel. Students, families, staff and community members turned out on a beautiful, sunny afternoon to watch the parade and cheer on the East football team as the Bulls faced off against the Centereach Cougars. The parade kicked off at St. James Elementary School and was led down Lake Avenue by the

marching band, followed by East junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders, the Great Hollow Middle School cheerleaders, the East Whisperettes kickline, and Smithtown East and West baton twirlers. Carloads of high school students rounded out the procession into the high school stadium. The football teams’ offense and defense were well-matched, with each leaving it all on the field. Centereach took an early

lead in the second quarter. The Smithtown East Bulls battled back in the fourth quarter but ultimately came up short. The halftime show was an early Halloween treat, with performances by the varsity cheerleaders, nationally recognized baton twirlers, and Whisperettes, 21-time national champions. Next, the homecoming court took the field to announce the 2019 king and queen – Ryan Dunstan and Olivia Salas.

A Real Treat! Commack Middle School students were treated to a unique experience when a Nao robot read a Halloween story to the sixth grade English Language Arts (ELA) classes. The Nao robot is a humanoid robot used in the robotics class electives offered at the school. One of the books in the sixth grade curriculum, Freak the Mighty, is about humanoid robots, so the technologyinfused lesson with “Leo” the robot tied in perfectly on

Halloween. Programming a robot is time consuming, and eighth grade students Carlos Karaptian, Jin Ko, Conor Spahn, and Mitchel Ghermezian spent many days during their lunch periods and after school meeting with teacher Shannon Dagastine to program the robot to prepare for Halloween. During the presentation, Leo introduced “himself” to the classes and let them

know about the things a Nao robot can do. Leo “read” the book, Froggy’s Halloween, and, for the finale, danced to the song Thriller. “The 6th grade students’ reaction was priceless,” said Mrs. Dagastine. “Our Robotics program continues to grow in popularity, and the boys’ motivation, strong work ethic and confidence in presenting was so impressive. I am beyond proud of them!”

KINDERGARTNERS CAST THEIR VOTE - Kindergartners at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently learned about the voting and election process prior to Election Day. The students read “The Three Little Pigs” and “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs,” which tells the story from the Big Bad Wolf’s perspective. The students made their own voter registration cards, filled out a voter application and then cast their vote in a ballot to see who they believed in the stories.
