The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, financial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.

This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.

The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are confidential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.

“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer

As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”

It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.

“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”

The Dwyer Project’s free, confidential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.

Celebrating Revitalization, & Community In St. James

Town Of Smithtown And Celebrate St. James Commemorate The Completion Of Celebrate Park With Ribbon Cutting Ceremony And Dedication

The Town of Smithtown in conjunction with Celebrate St. James; Past, Present & Future, hosted State, County & local officials, park donors, small businesses and community members, to cut a ribbon marking the official opening of Celebrate Park, on Lake Avenue in St. James. On Tuesday, October 17th, Supervisor Ed Wehrheim led the ceremony, in which the Town of Smithtown acknowledged the various departments, private citizens, and community organizations who collaborated together in a public-private partnership to build the new park and municipal parking lot.

“We’ve seen a full blown renaissance here in our quaint hamlet. People are strolling Lake Avenue again, kids are riding bikes to town again. And can you blame them? With a great park to sit and relax in, maybe take in a live performance… paired with some homemade old fashioned ice cream just across the street… it sounds like a Norman Rockwell, picture perfect day to me! Before I took office, I had once counted 33 empty storefronts on Lake Avenue. Now there’s maybe less than a handful. This is what revitalization looks like… Today we commemorate what can happen when a community, the good people who call it home and local levels of government can do when we all work together. Today we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor and officially welcome the people of this great town to Celebrate Park!” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

In 2020, the Town of Smithtown entered into an intergovernmental contract with Suffolk County, for the purchase of property, formerly known as the Irish Viking,

located on Lake Avenue in St. James, with a plan to construct a municipal parking lot and community park as the third phase of the St. James downtown revitalization initiative. Upon completion of the purchase of the centrally located land, the Town of Smithtown begun to coordinate design and construction efforts together with St. James residents; Natalie Weinstein of Natalie Weinstein Design Associates, Landscape Architect, Bob Retnauer of RDA and Architect, Michael Morbillo of Enspire Design Group, and in conjunction with the local arts organization, Celebrate St. James; Past, Present & Future. The park, which was partially funded through community donations and the construction of the municipal lot was completed in August.

Both are committed to progress and both attract the talent and cooperation of some pretty amazing people. The official unveiling of the Parks design was held in November of 2020, during a ceremonial groundbreaking event. Demolition of the building on the lot took place in the weeks afterwards. The Smithtown Planning department began to host a series of meetings together with Smithtown Highway Department, Traffic Safety, Parks, Buildings & Grounds, the Town Attorneys office, Landscape Architect, Bob Retnauer of RDA and Architect, Michael Morbillo of enspire design, Natalie Weinstein

and the the Celebrate St James organization to coordinate the building process. The municipal parking lot was completed in the Spring of 2021, and features 33 parking spaces, E.V. charging station, ornate street lighting and two entrances. Celebrate Park, which was completed in August of this year features a wrought iron custom gateway, a pavilion, a pergola, synthetic lawn, unique bench wall seating, personalized brick walkways which members of the community customized individually, a flag pole, benches, tables, dog fountain, and seasonally curated landscaping. Specialty string lighting frames the park and illuminates the space in the evening hours. Additionally, a donor wall serves as a backdrop to the pavilion and the pergola is coupled with original artwork (by Arline Goldstein) and a guide of

cultural and historic sites throughout the hamlet.

“Here we are in this magnificent park, located in the heart of the Lake Avenue Cultural Arts District with a pavilion, a pergola, seating, and more, among over 700 bricks with inscriptions that will be read for years to come, each one with its own story, whether it’s the name of a business, beloved family members and friends, there’s even a cow – Baby Face – who lived on the De Camp family farm in our town until the 1960s… I’d like to take a moment to offer a special thank you on behalf of Celebrate St. James to Supervisor Wehrheim and his administration, especially Peter Hans, Kelly Brown and Joseph Arico for building this beautiful park here in St. James! It has been my pleasure to work with all of you. I would also like to recognize and thank the Board of Directors of

Celebrate St. James for all their hard work and dedication to our mission.”

The Celebrate St. James organization acknowledged the major donors who contributed to the Park’s construction, which included the St. James Chamber of Commerce, The Community Association of Greater St. James, a number of local non-for-profit organizations, businesses, and families, presenting each donor with flowers, from Hither Brook Floral and Gift Boutique. State Senator Mario Mattera presented Celebrate St James, Natalie Weinstein and the Town of Smithtown with certificates for their collaborative efforts during the ceremony. The event ended with a ribbon cutting at the gateway entrance to Celebrate Park.

Captain Ann Marie Murray Of Kings Park Fire Department Recognized As The 2022 Healthcare Hero For The 13th Legislative District

The Suffolk County Legislature created an annual recognition program so that each legislator would designate a Healthcare Hero from his or her legislative district to acknowledge their work as a frontline healthcare worker and their service to the community.

Legislator Trotta names Captain Ann Marie Murray of Kings Park as his district’s Healthcare Hero for 2022. Captain Murray is married and the mother of three children. She works a s a surgical coordinator for a prosthetics company.

Since 2018, she has been involved with the Kings Park Fire Department Company 5. Murray became Captain in 2020. She also completed the University of NY-Suffolk County Fire Academy and EMS Officer and Leadership Training programs.

As a volunteer, Captain Ann Marie Murray responded to 668-amubulance requests last year during COVID-19 and this year to date, has had 240 calls. In 2020, she received the Department’s Chief’s Award. “Captain Ann Marie Murray has

been tireless in her efforts and performance. She has clearly demonstrated that she had dedicated herself to serving the emergency medical care needs of the community,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. “I have seen her in action at more than a half dozen ambulance calls – at my parent’s home, my neighbor’s house, my house and back to my parent’s home on multiple calls – I can’t think of a better and more deserving person,” added Trotta.

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during

World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary

vehicles along their families. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank

families to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary on Thursday, November 10th at 12 Noon, on the eve of Veterans Day 2022.

“Sadly, we recognize that many of the Sherman tank crews are gone but their legacy is lasting. The invitation is out to all surviving Sherman tankers but we are also asking the families of Sherman veterans to join us in ceremonies that mark the 80th anniversary of when this iconic tank was introduced into combat,” stated Kevin Carroll, the Armor Museum’s Community Affairs Director.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that

story and so we are asking tanker veterans or their survivors to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum.

“You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and

produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changes their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our Sherman veterans and their families as we pay tribute to a weapon that was manned by brave Americans nearly a century ago.”

The Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department is in need of Volunteer Drivers for its Meals on Wheels Program. Drivers deliver hot meals to the homebound elderly in Smithtown Township Mondays through Fridays. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Hauppauge Area Houses Of Worship To Host Zoom Annual Interfaith Pre-Thanksgiving Services

Following the traditions of an interfaith gathering of the local houses of worship for the past 30-plus years, the Hauppauge community will again celebrate the start of the Thanksgiving season. This year, we will be meeting in person at Temple Beth Chai at 870 Townline Road, Hauppauge, NY 11788 for the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. St. Thomas More R.C. Church, the Hauppauge United Methodist Church, Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, and Calvary Lutheran Church of Hauppauge, will be offering

a virtual gathering of the community. It will be hosted by Temple Beth Chai and led by Rabbi Stein, Cantor Stein, Fr. Antony Asir, Pastor Zachary Dean, and Rev. Barbara Whitlow at 7pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Temple Beth Chai. All are welcome. We will also broadcast on Zoom. Started in the 1980’s, the local Hauppauge houses of worship have shared the celebration of the season with each other by taking turns hosting an interfaith worship service. The religious leaders as well as congregation members

led prayers and joined in choir-led singing, in sharing A Capella hymns, as well as musical-instrumentations. A food collection of canned and boxed items (to assist with the local food pantries) as well as a monetary collection was always held. Fast forward a few decades, and the money collected became the basis for an annual scholarship to a Hauppauge High School senior from one of the participating houses of worship.

This year, we will resume with a food collection. Alternatively, donations may

Senator Mattera Working With EJ’S PJS To Collect Pajamas To Help Local Families

Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) has joined with EJ’S PJS to serve as a collection point for their annual pajama drive.

Senator Mattera’s office will be collecting pajamas for young children and teens to ensure that everyone has the supplies

they need to enjoy the holidays in comfort.

EJ’s PJs has made its mission over the past 11 years to collect and distribute pajamas to the children and teens who need them the most.

Started by Patricia Poggi, the effort is inspired by her three sons Edward,

Jeremy and Patrick and involves the entire family and the local community. It grew out of the family’s holiday tradition of “Poggi Plaid Pajamas” when they decided as a family that they wanted to share their warm and happy feeling with those in need.

Now an annual event,
