Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, Smithtown High School West students celebrated with an outdoor carnival.

Community members gathered for games, popcorn, cotton candy, a bounce house and slide, and plenty of entertainment prior to the big game.

The Bulls scored quickly in the first quarter and went on to dominate the game by a final score of 48-14. The band and cheerleaders – including the junior varsity squad and the middle school

teams from Accompsett and Great Hollow middle schools – kept the crowd entertained throughout the game.

The halftime celebration began with an introduction of the Smithtown Athletic Hall of Fame inductees.

The Smithtown High School West varsity cheerleaders kicked off the show and were followed by the award-winning Whisperettes. The newly crowned homecoming king and queen were escorted to the field to be recognized by the crowd.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Smithtown High School West in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated its homecoming on Oct. 12 with a community-centered celebration.

The festivities kicked off with a pep rally in the school’s gymnasium on Friday afternoon. The homecoming court was introduced and Steven Heimerle, along with his service dog Duke, and Meghan Deery were named the 2019 homecoming king and queen.

Smithtown Earns $50,000 Cybersecurity Grant The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) has awarded the Town of Smithtown $50,000 in grant funding for Cyber Security. This is the second year in a row that the town has received this award, intended to enhance and sustain the town’s approach to securing confidential data and personal information.

“With the many threats out there making news headlines, from hacked emails to ransomware and malware, we have an obligation to defend the sensitive information our community entrusts us to secure. The funding from this grant will serve as a great assistance in our efforts to update our digital infrastructure and modernize equipment.”

Smithtown Recreation Department’s Annual Ghost and Goblins Event will be held on Saturday, October 26th, 2019, at Brady Park on Maple Avenue in Smithtown from 10am to Noon.

During the event there will be a costume parade and raffle prizes awarded every half hour. There is no charge for the event. Helping to do their part in “kicking” cancer to the curb, Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held its eighth annual Coaches vs. Cancer event on Oct. 4. Both on and off the athletic fields, Great Hollow Middle School’s students, faculty, coaches and spectators joined

together in the fight against cancer.

Throughout the day, students and faculty dressed in yellow to show their awareness of childhood cancer. As part of the fundraising event, students could purchase a t-shirt or a wristband for an entrance on one of several games taking

Helping To ‘Kick’ Cancer place that afternoon. The field hockey, football, and boys and girls soccer took to the field to support the cause. Great Hollow’s kick line and cheerleaders performed during halftime.

The school and community raised about $2,400 and the money collected was donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Smithtown Gets $500,000 Jumpstart

Town Officials and Kings Park Community Leaders joined Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone at Park Bake Shop in Kings Park to celebrate $500,000 in Jumpstart Funds. which has been awarded to the town. On October 3rd, the County Executive signed the bill that awarded the Town of Smithtown $500,000 to support economic development in the Kings Park downtown district.

The funding will build a municipal parking lot in downtown Kings Park located just off Pulaski and Main Street. This improvement in infrastructure will expand efforts to create a more pedestrian friendly downtown that supports local business.

“Successful business owners like Gabe and Lucy at Park Bake Shop have had to make due with losing

business because of a lack of parking. By creating off-street parking, we are giving our downtown shops the opportunity to grow, while doing away with traffic congestion as drivers slow down to find on street parking. ” - Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim The proposal calls for the creation of 23 parking spaces for businesses like Relish, Park Bake Shop, Shipping Center, The Reel Kitchen, and Dragon House. It will also assist in the leasing of long-time vacant shops, as the lack of parking has prevented small business owners from choosing Kings Park as it’s future home. Providing off-street parking options has a proven record in improving foot traffic while creating a walkable, centralized sense of place.

In 2017, a Downtown

Market Analysis and Action Plan was completed by Larisa Ortiz Associates. In this study, it was determined that the businesses along “Restaurant Row” were suffering due to a lack of sufficient parking. The Analysis was backed up by public polling from both residents and business owners.

About the Jumpstart Program: Suffolk County’s Jumpstart Program is part of a comprehensive economic development plan designed to encourage, foster, and enhance the planning and development of regionally significant developments in and around Suffolk’s downtowns.

Suffolk County has awarded $11.3 million in Jumpstart funding since 2013.

Twenty nine 11th and 12th grade students from the Smithtown Central School District have been selected to represent their schools in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education All-County Festival. In addition, six student-musicians have also been chosen for the New York State School Music Association’s AllState Ensembles.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is hosting an informational fair for seniors at Kings Park Manor, 300 Ardito Avenue, The Clubhouse, in Kings Park. The event is Thursday, October 24, from 11am – 1pm. It is free and open to the public. Seniors should bring their ID card or license with them.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will be taking photos and residents will complete an application to receive an “In Case of Emergency ID Card” that will have their photo and pertinent medical data, as well as their emergency contact information on it.

p.m. at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts, 720 Northern Blvd in Brookville.

“This concert, which is the first of its kind for the Foundation, promises to be a fun-filled evening of musical entertainment and laughter. As all of us at the Foundation look forward to granting the wishes of as many children diagnosed with life-threatening

illnesses as possible in the months ahead; we thank our friends for supporting this event and our mission of over 37 years,” said Marty Lyons, Founder of the Marty Lyons Foundation.

Marty Lyons, founder of the Marty Lyons Foundation, is a former NFL star for the New York Jets and a member of the legendary New York Sack Exchange.

Marty experienced three life-changing events that led him to establish the nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children suffering terminal or life-threatening illnesses, ages 3 to 17. It is unique among wishgranting organizations in that it provides a first wish and will consider a second wish for children

who fall out of remission or are facing more battles with their illnesses. The Foundation has granted the special wishes of over 7,600 children since its inception in 1982.
