2021 Long Island Sound Fresh Pond Festival at SWAN Park On Saturday, September 18th, 2021, Salonga Wetland Advocates Network, Inc. (SWAN), a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt environmental nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing and protecting wetlands in Fort Salonga, hosted its 2021 Long Island Sound Fresh Pond Festival at SWAN Park in Fort Salonga. The aim of the festival, which was funded by the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, was to educate Long Islanders on how they can protect the wetlands and the LI Sound in their own communities, and how to do so in fun and inspiring ways. SWAN President, Charlie Muller, stated, “My wife, Tia, and I are inspired by the show of support for Long Island Sound and Fresh Pond by Fort Salonga residents. Our community clearly recognizes how beautiful the wetlands and beaches

are and we are all grateful to live here.” The beach cleanup was a big highlight of the day, with participants collecting 140 pounds of debris along the Long Island sound, which can be harmful to native plants and animals. The event also engaged participants with boat rides, mural painting, kids’ yoga, a hands-on compost tutorial, and wildflower seed planting. Guests enjoyed dinner and beverages while observing educational and interactive presentations, along with live music. Presenters included the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area; Peter H. Linderoth, Director of Water Quality at Save the Sound; and Peter Janow, local River Otter expert. Also in attendance was Charlie Muller, President and Founder of SWAN, and

Darcy Lonsdale, Ph. D., professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. There were about 100 attendees in total, at least 20 of which were children. More about SWAN SWAN was founded in 2016 as an environmental nonprofit by Charlie Muller, Patty Neff Hodges and Steve Uzzo. The organization is involved in a number of projects dedicated to wetland protection, including over four years of participation in the Unified Water Study. Under this study, SWAN provides Save The Sound with hundreds of readings of critical water quality parameters from the Nissequogue River from May to October. SWAN Park was created for use by neighborhood residents to encourage community engagement and support for local

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most signiﬁcantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-proﬁt is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonproﬁts and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

Commack School District Hosts 9/11 Night of Reflection

The Commack School District recently hosted a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 20year anniversary of 9/11 and honor those who perished and those who support them still. This event continued the annual tradition that the Commack School District has of gathering the community together as one to remember those that were lost during the tragedy. A candlelight ceremony

was held at the Heroes Memorial Track at the Commack High School football field as the bleachers were filled with students, parents, alumni and faculty. The Commack School District recognized first responders, past and present, for their continued commitment in serving the community. Students read firsthand accounts of the experiences of Commack community members from September 11, 2001. Commack is one of a few

districts to receive a piece of World Trade Center steel, which was added to the district’s memorial in 2012 and features the names of Commack residents and district alumni who perished in the attacks. The ceremony incorporated adding another wreath to the steel piece in honor of another year of remembrance for the fallen and concluded with a helicopter fly over and 21-gun salute.

Smithtown Recreation Department’s Annual Ghosts and Goblins Event will be held on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, at Browns Road Park, 72 Browns Road in Nesconset from 10am to Noon. There will be games and prizes for all, as well as pony rides and a balloon artist who

will be making amazing balloon sculptures. During the event there will be games, raffle prizes and lots of fun for all. There is no charge for the event. The Recreation Department requests a free-will donation of a nonperishable food item for the Smithtown Food Pantry.

On Saturday, September 25th, approximately 40 Town of Smithtown Youth & Community Alliance studentvolunteers joined up with members of the National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, in conjunction with the Parks Department, to clean up harmful waste left along the shoreline. With the help of Sgt Carissa Siry and SSG Jessica Alese (National Guard) in addition to Youth & Community Alliance personnel, the students collected trash and recorded any evidence of drug, tobacco and alcohol related waste to help identify the areas where substance use is taking place. This initiative was conducted to help bring community awareness as a part of the Smithtown Youth & Community Alliance’s efforts to keep the community SAFE and clean. “This is an outstanding show of community service by our brightest future leaders of the community. I’d like to personally thank the National Guard team, Youth Bureau staff, Roseann Conforti, Youth Services Coordinator Janine MarcAnthony, Kelly DeVito, Alexa Stern, and Kristin Doran from Horizons Counseling & Education, Don Misuraca from our Parks Department, and most of all, the incredible

kids who gave up a sunny Saturday to help make our shoreline safer for both humans and wildlife.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim In total, the student volunteers collected three (3) 30 gallon bags filled with alcohol, tobacco/vape and drug related items, and approximately six (6) 30 gallon bags filled with waste which is environmentally harmful to the aquatic and wildlife living in the habitat. “We were lucky enough to have great weather on the day of the event. It was actually a PERFECT day for a beach cleanup. Alliance student volunteers were so enthusiastic and into the project. It was a very effective beach cleanup; an educational experience about substance use in that location, and a wonderful opportunity for

Three Smithtown Students Earn Silver Medal

Diego Bower Bonvino, a senior, and his brother Alejandro, a freshman, both attend Smithtown High School West, and each completed the necessary requirements to earn the Silver Medal in the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award Program. Established in 2017, this program is open to students who range in age from 13 to 18 years old. They meet with their respective legislator and develop a program of action to achieve various goals in such categories as personal development, physical fitness, exploration and volunteer service. Deigo and Alejandro visited and explored 15 parks, trails and preserves throughout Suffolk County. The brothers hiked together and trained for a half marathon. They both did a lot of walking in the neighborhood and on their treadmill for additional exercise. As he loves to travel, Diego hopes to visit Japan, which is on his “bucket list.” During the program, he studied the characters of the Japanese alphabet as a means to learn more about the country’s language. Diego has volunteered at the Sweetbriar Nature Center for several years.

He is involved with the Boy Scouts and is currently working on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Alejandro wanted to improve his artistic and musical skills so he took several on-line art classes and learned about different mediums and techniques. In his basement, he painted a mural of the characters from South Park. In addition, since he is a member of the school’s brass ensemble, he wanted to improve his ability to play the French horn so he increased his practice time for playing the instrument. Alejandro is also a member of the Boy Scouts and enjoys doing community service projects. Tara O’Reilly, also of Smithtown and a high school freshman, received her Silver Medal for participating in the physical fitness, exploration and personal development areas of the program. Tara also visited 15 parks with her family and learned that by exploring them, she enjoyed hiking and all that nature has to offer. She participates in gymnastics twice a week and wants to enhance her skills on the beam. This semester she joined the school’s Cross Country team to continue improving

her physical well-being. During the summer, she volunteered to weed, trim and water the garden in front of the Suffolk County Legislature’s building in Hauppauge. Tara is a Girl Scout and has been busy working on attaining her Girl Scout Silver Award. For that project, she is educating people about the negative effects that plastic has on marine life. In addition, Tara is in the school band and plays the flute. She was thrilled to be named first chair, but due to COVID, they were unable to play any concerts. “These youngsters did a great job, especially during the pandemic, and they accomplished their goals so I am very proud of them and am confident that they will be successful in anything they do. I look forward to seeing Tara and Diego when they get their respective scouting awards,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. Married and the mother of three sons, two who are twins, Betty is very active in her community and school district. She is treasurer of the Council of Schools and vice president of the Kings Park High School’s Parents Faculty Association. She also spearheads clothing and toiletry drives for homeless veterans. After being honorably discharged in 1989, Betty remained in the reserves until 1994. She worked at the VA Hospital in Manhattan and became a registered nurse. Later she joined the staff at Nassau University Medical Center and then became a senior nurse at Winthrop Hospital, now New York Langone, where she continues to work in the Critical Care Intensive Care Unit/Surgical Intensive Care unit caring for patients with medically complex cases.

Last year, the Suffolk County Legislature enacted legislation designating June 12 as “Women Veterans Appreciation Day” in Suffolk County. Each legislator selects one female veteran from his/ her district to recognize on that day at a ceremony. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Legislators and their honorees could not meet in person, but could participate via a Zoom meeting where they were acknowledged and thanked for their service. “Long Island Cars’’ Fall Harvest Car Show & Swap Meet On Sunday October 24th “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories

and literature, plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. You’ll experience live music, fun fair food and more. Pack up the family and plan a scenic autumn drive to Flowerfields Fairgrounds, North Country Rd. (Rte 25A) in Saint James. Dr. Kevin Simmons Appointed District’s Assistant Superintendent For Instruction And Administration

Dr. Kevin Simmons will soon have a new role within the Smithtown Central School District. The board of education approved Simmons as its new assistant superintendent for instruction and administration at

its meeting on Sept. 14, following the recommendation of Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Secaur. Simmons has served as High School East principal since July of 2016 and previously

had served as principal of Nesaquake Middle School. He will remain in his role at High School East during a brief transition period. A successor as principal will be sought immediately.
