Local officials, community leaders, colleagues, family and neighbors of John E. Baker recently came together to officially dedicate Laurel Drive Park, in memory of local builder, decorated Vietnam War hero and community philanthropist John Edward Baker. On Tuesday, September 20th, 2022 Supervisor Ed Wehrheim led the ceremony together with fellow town officials, members of the Planning, Building, Parks & Public Safety departments, together with the Baker family, the Cosentino family, John’s neighbors, and the Hauppauge Recreation Development Association. The ceremony included a ribbon cutting and sign unveiling at the newly renovated “John E. Baker Memorial Park” formerly known as Laurel Drive Park.

would not build something without giving something back to the community. John was also famous for his visits to Town… where he would spend hours sharing great stories with us. Most of his war stories are still classified so we won’t be sharing any of them with you today. We lost John way too soon. We miss him greatly. And this park dedication today, is just one small way we can ensure his legacy remains a constant for generations to come.” -

As part of the 2021-2022 capital improvements budget, the Town of Smithtown approved the funding and execution of a total renovation at Laurel Drive Park. The overhaul included a brand new playground, basketball, tennis & handball courts, fencing, walkways and all new surfacing. Additionally, for safety reasons, the park was extended and leveled towards the back of the property. This reconstruction was inspired as a the result

of a working relationship with Hauppauge Recreation Development Association (HRDA) a community based group working with the Town to increase and improve access to local parks and facilities. The work was completed in the mid Spring 2022. Upon receiving the news of John Baker’s passing in June, the Smithtown Town Board agreed that the new park should be dedicated in his honor.

But he’s also responsible for preservation of over 40 acres of sensitive land, most notably the 24

acre scam property located just north of the bull and the 8 acre Harned Sawmill property in Commack, among others. To this day, we often say how we miss John and how he was the guy to go to if we needed to get something done. About John Baker: Smithtown resident and builder John Baker, moved to the township in 1973 where he married his wife Joanne. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 19651967. Before Baker began his career with PJ Venture, he worked as a heavy machinery operator for the Local 138 Engineers Union.

John Baker’s close working relationship with the Town of Smithtown has had an enormous impact, benefiting both the community and the environment equally. Over the years Baker preserved properties such as the Hauppauge Springs, the

historic Harned Sawmill in Commack and the Saam property. His efforts resulted in the preservation of historic and environmentally sensitive properties which the Town of Smithtown would not have been able to acquire without a significant cost to the taxpayer.

During Baker’s career with PJ Venture (Cosentino Realty) for over 35 years, he oversaw and managed the construction of over 1.5 million square feet of commercial retail in the Town of Smithtown. Notable projects include Cosentino Commerce Center (Commack South Shopping Center,) Crooked Hill Commons, Café Corner and the second Chick-fil-a on Long Island. Before his passing, Baker was in the process of constructing Floor and Décor’s in Commack South Shopping Center and the new Geico headquarters located in Commack’s Café Corner.

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities;

deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Ghosts & Goblins Due To Invade Smithtown!!

Smithtown Recreation Department’s Annual Ghosts and Goblins Event will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, 2022, at Browns Road Park in Nesconset from 10am to Noon. There will be games and prizes, as well as pony rides and amazing balloon sculptures – a Spooktacular morning for

all! During the event there will be raffle prizes awarded every half hour. There is no charge for the event however, the Recreation Department requests a free-will donation of a nonperishable food item for the Smithtown Food Pantry. Free raffle tickets are given to those who participate in the donation. Due to the

generosity of Smithtown residents who have enjoyed this day in the past, the Recreation Department has been able to make large food donations to the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry. For upcoming events, call the Recreation Department office at 631-360-7644.

Red Ribbon Week Virtual Art Gallery

The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center is teaming up with the Smithtown Youth Bureau to encourage Smithtown township K-12 students to participate in a creative and fun initiative.

Students are invited to create their own artwork using this year’s Red Ribbon theme, Celebrate Life - Live Drug Free. Artwork should illustrate the ways you personally celebrate life naturally without drugs. Students can draw, color, paint, or even use computer graphics to artistically edit a photo. Participants should put their initials, age and school on their piece of artwork. Town Certificates of Community Service for 1 hour of service will be provided for students in

grades 6-12. Students in grades K-5 will receive a Certificate of Participation.

“We are excited to once again celebrate Red Ribbon Week and showcase all of the artwork that the young people in the community create. There are so many ways to experience life in a fun and healthy way without the use of drugs and alcohol. It is important to highlight this information because too many teens think they must use a substance in order to fit in. We need to educate our community that most kids are not using drugs and alcohol.” - Kelly DeVito, Horizons Youth Services Coordinator

their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those whose parents do not. Yet, only a quarter of teens surveyed report having these types of conversations. Alcohol and drug use has reached near epidemic levels, and it is important to be open and honest about these issues so that the stigma of addiction is taken away.

An online gallery will be posted on the official Town of Smithtown website showcasing all student artwork. Red Ribbon coloring sheet templates are also available on the Horizons Counseling and Education Center website for younger participants. Volunteer Drivers Needed For Meals On Wheels

The Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department is in need of Volunteer Drivers for its Meals on Wheels Program. Drivers deliver hot meals to the homebound elderly in Smithtown Township Mondays through Fridays. Mileage reimbursement is available.

We are currently experiencing a steep reduction in the availability of our dear volunteer drivers. Our

Home Delivered Meal Program relies heavily on our volunteer drivers and their ability to deliver a hot meal to each of our clients.

The Nutrition Program currently serves 105 homebound seniors throughout the community. Without our volunteers’ help and generosity of time, these seniors may not receive a meal and will endure continued social isolation.

Volunteers may give an hour or two of their time to help us deliver these meals. Options for daily, weekly and substitute drivers are available to any who choose to help.

Smithtown Shreds 7.76 Tons Of Paper

On Saturday, September 17th, over 250 residents delivered more than 7.76 tons of paper documents at the Town of Smithtown Municipal Services Facility during the second shredding event of 2022. The bi-annual event is hosted free of charge for residents, courtesy of the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, and the Department of Public Safety.

Over the course of Saturday, a total of 256 vehicles pulled into Smithtown’s Municipal Services Facility to safely and securely dispose of 7.76 tons of sensitive documents. The record attendance and weight for this event was held in September of 2020, with 440 households and more than 16 tons of sensitive documents safely shredded. Due to the peak of the Coronavirus Pandemic in April of 2020, the Town only hosted one shredding event that year.

A steady stream of residents arrived at Smithtown’s Municipal Services Facility throughout the day to dispose of personal documents, which were then safely destroyed by the Data Shredding Service, Inc. “Shreddersaurus.”

The Department of Environment and Waterways and Municipal Services Facility provided additional support staff to assist with moving vehicles along. Residents were pleased with the service and no wait times. All of the paper material was safely shredded by Data Shredding Service, Inc. using the “Shreddersaurus.”

Shred Event was hosted at the Municipal Services Facility located at 85 Old Northport Road in Kings Park from 9:00AM through 3:00PM. Data Shredding Service, Inc. is a full-service confidential shredding service located on Corporate Drive in Hauppauge. The 2023 paper shredding events are being planned and will be announced in the 2023 refuse and recycling calendar.
