This recognition will stay with you for the rest of your life and can never be taken from you,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. “What you have done is very impressive and we will expect great things from you in the future,” added Legislator Trotta.

following a series of local storms in 2018 that actually forced Town of Smithtown officials to close the boardwalk at the Kings Park Bluff. The purpose of this local Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club initiative is to support Town of Smithtown repair and maintenance efforts along the shoreline to protect our bluffs, which residents visit and enjoy regularly. Specific projects would include supporting those efforts and strategies suggested by the Town’s Department of Environment & Waterways, which have proven effective in slowing erosion. This event will also serve to bring community

awareness to the issue of shoreline erosion and the Commack- Kings Park Rotary’s other local and international initiatives. Come and learn about the Rotary and its motto; “Service Above Self.” The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau will be assisting in the coordination of the Protect the Bluffs Initiative. Visit c o m m a c k r o t a r y. o r g ASAP to register for this fun event, supporting a wonderful local cause! Contact Stephanie Dunaieff, Rotary Club Secretary at sdunaieff@ commackrotary.org for further information about the Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club and this local initiative kick-off event.

MESSAGES OF POSITIVITY AND INSPIRATION - Seventh and eighth grade members of Girl Scout Troop 814 at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District used their Silver Award project as an opportunity to beautify and spread positivity in their school. Madelyn Law, Fabiana Gorre, Grace Viola, Adira Pizzaro, Ayla Gannon, Morgan Matejka, Jennah Ahmed, Madison Dominger, Victoria Starkey, Mya DeClue, Kylie Muir and Jillian Donnelly created, designed and added their artistic touches to signs that are now on display throughout the school. The signs feature messages of empowerment and positivity and can be found in the girls restrooms, locker rooms, main office and guidance office. “We wanted to brighten up our school, inspire our classmates and leave a legacy for the next set of students who come here,” the girls said. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

nominated for the award by Smithtown High School West Assistant Principal Christopher Elsesser. “She is always looking for opportunities to share how she incorporates technology in her classroom with her peers,” he said. “Smithtown Central School District is very fortunate to have Dr. DiGregorio working to

empower teachers in learning new strategies and instructional tools to promote long term growth and capacity.” Last school year, Dr. DiGregorio instituted a new program called Triple T (Teaching Technological Tools) to offer instructional technology professional development to a small group of teachers during

faculty meetings, after school or during prep periods. “Technology has always been my passion,” DiGregorio said. “I think the program has been so successful here in Smithtown Central School District because the teachers really have someone to support them.” The Fred Podolski

Award is presented to educators who have demonstrated outstanding technology initiatives. The award will

Biggest Paper Shredding Event

SUFFOLK ZONE 2 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

On Saturday, September 21st, over 300 households dropped by Town Hall to safely shred over six tons of sensitive documents. Ten minutes before the official start, a line of cars formed, eagerly anticipating the bi-annual shredding event, held courtesy of the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, and the Department of Public Safety. “The turnout this time around was significantly higher than previous events and I expect its popularity to continue to grow next year. This free service gives us an opportunity to educate the public about the environmental and social benefits of safely disposing sensitive

documents while providing a much needed service to our residents that they truly appreciate.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Once the last of the paper was shredded by the industrial strength “Shreddersaurus,” there were approximately 30 cubic yards, or 12,580 pounds in paper collected and securely disposed of. There was a steady stream of residents coming throughout the day to have their personal papers safely destroyed. “This free service to our residents continues to grow in popularity… I want to thank DEW, MSF, and Public Safety personnel, who devoted their Saturdays to ensuring that our residents had little to no wait time. They were

courteous and polite and I think that makes all the difference.” - Councilman Tom McCarthy The first Paper Shredding event of the year was held on April 6th, with 203 households participating. In 2018, there were a total of 341 households who participated in safely disposing 10.1 tons of paper in the Summer and Fall combined. The September event took place at Town Hall on Main Street in Smithtown from 9:00AM through 3:00PM. The Paper Shredding service was provided by Data Shredding Service, Inc. of Corporate Drive in Hauppauge. The final total of shredded paper weighed in at 12,580 pounds, or 6.3 tons.

AMERICA’S VETDOGS OF SMITHTOWN Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) joined America’s Vet Dogs of Smithtown, to thank them for their critical work and address the importance of supporting our nation’s veterans and programs like America’s VetDogs that assist veterans in transitioning back into civilian life. America’s VetDogs is dedicated to providing enhanced mobility and renewed independence for first responders, active-duty service members and veterans with disabilities through their service dog program. Congressman Zeldin is pictured above with America’s VetDogs President & CEO John Miller and Sully H.W. Bush, who was trained at America’s VetDogs in NY-1, served as President George H.W. Bush’s service dog and now works at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.

During the Smithtown Central School District’s Sept. 24 Board of Education meeting, the trustees paused to recognize several Smithtown High School West students’ contributions to the arts. The board recognized Zachary Ketchum for being named a MeritAward Winner by the Long Island Arts Alliance in the category of theater. Sponsored by the New York Community Bank Foundation and produced by Newsday, the LIAA annually recognizes students who excel in both academics and the arts in the areas of music, visual arts, dance, theater HOCKEY TEAM HONORS TEACHER - On Sept. 26, Smithtown High School and media arts. Ketchum West’s field hockey team held the 10th annual “Play 4 The Cure” game honoring the memory of Sara Long Harte. Each year, Smithtown High School West dedicates a game to the former St. James Elementary School teacher who lost her battle with breast cancer. Harte taught at St. James for eight years, the same elementary school she attended. In her honor and memory, there is a scholarship fund in Smithtown, a memorial garden and a hand-crafted picket fence in front of the St. James Elementary School. Her dedication to her students, work with the Sunrise Fund for Childhood Cancer and her love for the community will never be forgotten. Photo courtesy of Smithtown Central School District

was sponsored by English teacher James Brannigan, who also coached his monologue performance. Music teacher James Brosnan also coached and accompanied Ketchum on piano during his vocal performance. Smithtown High School West’s Thespian Troupe 2035 submitted an original short play titled “The Sweater” to the Stage the Change: Arts as a Social Voice Conference, being held on Nov. 1 at LIU Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The submission about bodyshaming in high school received the distinction of honorable mention, and the troupe members have

been invited to perform the piece for students and educators as part of the conference’s “Discover the Work” session. Under the direction of thespian adviser James Brannigan, the following students authored and performed the piece: Kathleen Alexander, Kyra Drannbaur, Kristina Erwin, Annabella Hernandez, Erika Hinneman, Jessica Hymowitz, Erika Loer, Keeley O’Malley, Sarah Russo, Natalie Ryan, Amanda Sinclair and Jason Suris. The district congratulates the students on these outstanding accomplishments.

PUZZLE ANSWERS: TACKAN STUDENT ‘STANDS’ UP TO CHILDHOOD CANCER - At the Sept. 10 board of education meeting, Smithtown Central School District recognized 7-yearold Dominick Chiuchiolo, a student at Tackan Elementary School, for his fundraising efforts.
