After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014.

In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001.

Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood.

According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

might be behind them. Such discussions can help youngsters develop their critical thinking skills. 4. Newspapers bring ideas and current events to life. Many children are aware of major world events, even if they don’t know or understand the details. Newspaper articles about world events can be used as avenues to discussions about what’s going on in the world. 5. Newspapers build global awareness. Customized newsfeeds funneled through social media outlets can make it hard for young people to recognize and understand the world beyond their own communities and interests. Each days, newspapers include local, national and international stories that can illustrate to kids that there’s a world beyond their own. 6. Newspapers promote social consciousness. Without newspapers, young people may never be exposed to the social issues facing their own communities or those issues that are affecting people across the country and the world. Newspapers provide unbiased exposure to such issues, potentially leading youngsters to further explore topics that are shaping their world and even encouraging them to form their own opinions. 7. Newspapers make learning fun. According to a 2017 report from Common Sense Media, kids younger than eight spend an average of two

Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to single-room schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever. Newspapers might not be as glamorous as tablets or other gadgets, but they are still an invaluable resource to educators and students. The following are seven ways in which newspapers in the classroom can benefit students. 1. Newspapers build vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary. Each day, newspapers are filled with fresh stories that can introduce kids to new words, helping them to strengthen their vocabularies and make them more effective communicators. 2. Newspapers improve reading skills. Like the old adage says, “Practice makes perfect.” Reading newspapers each day can help kids develop their reading and comprehension skills. 3. Newspapers promote critical thinking. Newspaper reporters are trained to objectively report the news, sharing facts without allowing their own opinions to influence their stories. Educators can choose stories from the newspaper to serve as catalysts for discussions that focus not just on the facts listed in the story, but what

Free Smoking Cessation Classes Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible.

“Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign

up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to

be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a seven-week course that uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment

PSEG Employee Helps Local Kids Start School Year Off Right

Hundreds of area school children are heading back to class in style thanks to the generosity of PSEG Long Island employees. Throughout the summer, employees in all PSEG Long Island offices donated school supplies for an annual employee-initiated school supply drive. Thousands of boxes of crayons, pencils and pens, notebooks and binders, rulers, scissors, and other essentials were collected by the company’s Employee Outreach Council (EOC). Then, in assembly line fashion, the various backto-school items were packed into nearly 400 PSEG Long Island logoed backpacks and distributed by employee volunteers to a variety of grassroots agencies and organizations across Long Island and the Rockaways for area school children to enjoy.

The PSEG Long Island Employee Outreach Council’s mission is to coordinate support for the specific needs of the communities it serves in order to build and strengthen connections between PSEG Long Island, its employees and its neighbors. Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees also helped several local organizations distribute donated school supplies to children at various events throughout Long Island and the Rockaways hosted by Family Service League, LIADV (Long Island Against Domestic Violence), New Hour, Salvation Army and the United Way. “So many of our employees raise their hand for these back-toschool events and it’s so heartwarming,” said Suzanne Brienza, PSEG

Long Island director of customer experience and utility marketing. “Supporting children in the communities we serve is another way we give back to our customers.” PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. Last year, PSEG Long Island employees logged 26,000 service hours, volunteering at 1,145 fundraising and community events to support more than 400 organizations. For more information on how PSEG Long Island supports the communities it serves, visit https://www.psegliny. com/community.

PSEG EMPLOYEE HELPS LOCAL KIDS - PSEG Long Island employee volunteer William Pannullo of Smithtown helps Long Island Against Domestic Violence in Central Islip organize and pack school supplies for area children. PSEG Long Island employees participated in several school supply drives to help children in the community start the school year off right.

THIRTY TEACHERS WELCOMED - Thirty new teachers were welcomed into the Smithtown Central School District during new teacher orientation from Aug. 2729. To kick off the first-day activities, new teachers were introduced to members of central administration and Smithtown’s board of education. The new hires also met with departmental administrators and learned about some of the district’s technology initiatives. Day two included DASA training and visits to their respective schools to meet with principals and assistant principals. The final day of orientation focused on building relationships, lesson planning, professional development and social emotional learning. Photo courtesy of Smithtown Central School District They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area. If you believe you are eligible to be a recipient, please contact James Ciervo at 631.793.1065 to submit your wish application today! Also, the organization is looking for Twilight Wish Sponsors that are willing to make an “Impact Investment” in our community by being a Twilight Wish Sponsor. They offer 6 different Sponsorship Levels on a one-time basis for a full year with optional annual renewal. Each level comes with a host of benefits. If you are interested in becoming a Twilight Wish Sponsor, please contact Cass Forkin, Chief Visionary Officer, at 215.534.0402. Please visit www.twilightwish.org for more information.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered
