the fall months. The newly hatched larval ticks will cluster in hundreds or sometimes even thousands which is why people will often get bitten many times, usually on the ankle’s, legs and waist. The Lone Star tick larva are microscopic, hard to see and while they don’t transmit tick borne diseases, can give you the meat allergy Alpha Gal. With warmer winters over the past several years ticks have become a year-round problem on the east end. Rep. Zeldin Announces Expansion of Military Child Care Assistance Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), an Army veteran who continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, announced the United States Air Force has designated Long Island a high cost area, allowing active duty Air Force service members to receive child care tuition assistance from the Department of Defense (DOD) for use at approved local child care providers. Earlier this year, Congressman Zeldin’s ofﬁce initiated an inquiry

with the Air Force through the Department of Defense to reassess its cost of living determination for New York’s First Congressional District, home of Gabreski Air National Guard Base. This review resulted in all of Long Island being designated as a high cost area, making active duty Air Force service members eligible for child care tuition assistance. “Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in America to call home, but it also boasts

one of the highest costs of living in the country,” said Congressman Zeldin. “Long Island’s active duty service members, especially those serving at Gabreski Air National Guard Base, put their lives on the line to protect us. 11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference beneﬁtting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.

Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together,

have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making

donations of food or supplies to local ﬁrehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least

one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of ﬁrst responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of

and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11.
