Apple picking, pumpkin picking, Robin Hood interactive corn maze and spooky mazes highlight the activities every weekend at the Harbes Family Farm Orchard (http:// www.harbesfamilyfarm. com/farm-orchard/) at 5698 Sound Avenue in Riverhead. Also at the Harbes u-pick farm are Hayrides, the Honey Crisp Café featuring Harbes famous Cider Doughnuts, wine tastings for adults,

music, pony rides and pedal karts for kids.

To celebrate the Fall season, the orchard will hold its Apple Festival on Saturday September 14 and Sunday September 15 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Live music, activities, games and specialty foods based on apples will fill the festival weekend calendar.

There will be a special appearance by “Johnny Appleseed” to emcee the activities for children.

As a volunteer, you would provide haircuts for people in the community who are facing life limiting illnesses. This is an invaluable service for our clients and one which is in high demand!

Volunteers are asked to provide 2-4 haircuts per month. Hospice provides orientation sessions to our organization as well as ongoing support and mentorship.

Dolphins are becoming an ever-present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks

ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature.

Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. In order to successfully maintain a healthy biome for all of our descendants, we must first monitor and protect our wildlife.

Dose of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group.

So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans.

In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,

newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia.

Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense.

Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited.

We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become.

Cruisin’ For Kids The second annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) Cruisin’ For Kids’ Sake Motorcycle Run will take place at 10 a.m., on Saturday September 21st, with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd. Summer Concert Series Suffolk County Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce completed their 2013 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with Minute By Minute rocking the final show this season.

This year in an expanded schedule, the Series featured seven musical acts such as That 70’s Band, Dec8dia, 45RPM, The Fast Lane, Just Groovin and Songs In The Attic who kicked off this year’s wonderful series.

In addition, Legislator Kennedy had the honor and privilege of recognizing several Hometown Heroes who are wonderful role models for our young people and our entire community. Last night, Legislator Kennedy and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored three contestants from the Miss Long Island Contest. Amanda Luisi, a junior at Smithtown High School East, was the Second Runnerup in the Miss Long Island Teen Beauty Pageant and the Fourth Runner-up for the Teen Spirit Award. She is also captain of the Junior Varsity Cheerleading Team and volunteered feeding the hungry after Hurricane Sandy.

Danielle Cinone, who is graduating with a Masters in

Communication from Adephi, was the Third Runner-up in the Miss Long Island contest and won the Pageantry Spirit Award. In addition, Danielle competes in pageants to raise awareness and help fight multiple sclerosis.

Finally, we hosted Dana Wachter, who was also a finalist for Miss Long Island and has taught at the preschool and elementary school levels. Dana has a Masters in Special Education with a concentration in autism from Long Island University.

Earlier this summer, we all had the privilege to hear Miss Rachel Hankers, our local contestant featured on American Idol, sing the National Anthem and then I Will Survive with That 70’s Band.

Furthermore, Legislator Kennedy, in conjunction with Long Island Cares, was able to raise a recordsetting amount of nearly $6,000.00 and pounds upon pounds of food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, for stocking local food pantries, through the generosity of the entire community. The series could not have been the safe family event it was without Ron Schneider and his men and women from the Auxiliary Police and the Nesconset Fire Department. Of course, the Concert Series could not have been the phenomenal event it was week after week without the tireless effort of the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce led by Gina Coletti, Norma Dispenza and Jim Delahanty.

Going Back In Time

Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce continued their 2013 Free Summer Concert Series recently with That 70s Band playing a wide variety of 70s music ranging from disco to classic rock.

The audience had a special treat when Rachel Hankers, from American Idol fame, joined the band to sing the disco hit I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

This concert attracted the largest crowd of the summer, which had already seen such musical acts

as 45 RPM, Dec8dia, Just Groovin’ and Songs In The Attic, who kicked off this year’s wonderful series.

Throughout the evening, community service groups circulated amongst the crowd in order to take in monetary and food donations for Long Island Cares, founded by the late Harry Chapin, to help feed residents in need as well as Operation Care Package who collected personal items to send to U.S. Armed Forces overseas.

To date, concertgoers at the Nesconset Concert Series have given over $5,500 in donations to Long Island Cares and with

one more concert to go, a new record of giving is in sight.

Legislator Kennedy again would like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly to make this a safe and exciting concert series. The series would not be successful without the efforts of Ron Schneider and his men and women from the Auxiliary Police and the Nesconset Fire Department.

Legislator Kennedy would also like to thank the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce led by Gina Coletti, Norma Dispenza and Jim Delahanty.

Roundtable Meeting The Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America) will hold its monthly Roundtable meeting on Thursday, September 12th at the John Glenn H.S. (Elwood Road, Elwood/East Northport).

Fellowship/gathering is at 7:30 p.m. followed by break-out sessions starting at 8:15 p.m Roundtable is designed to help Cub Scout and Boy

Scout volunteer leaders do a better job working with our youth. The Matinecock District serves youth living in the Town of Huntington, as well as the Commack, Hauppauge, and Kings Park school districts in western Smithtown Township.

Playing For Peace

Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the 5th Annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 10th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford.

Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams — eight men’s teams and four women’s teams — participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, PBA was the Division 1 Winner.

PMCT (also known as the North Bellport Athletic Association Blasters) won

Division 2, then went on to defeat PBA in the championship match. The winner in the Women’s Division went to Port Jeff Sporting Goods.

The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was organized by the office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco.

We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through sports,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.

Boating Course Offered Smithtown Bay Power Squadron (a unit of the non-profit United States Power Squadrons) is presenting a Safe Boating Course at Hauppauge High School, 500 Lincoln Blvd., Room 212, beginning Tuesday September 17th, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Inperson registration takes place the first evening for students 10 years or older.

The course consists of four sessions and the final examination,

meeting September 17th, September 24th, October 8th, October 15th and October 22nd. Successful completion of the course provides NYS approved safety, personal watercraft operation certificates and fulfills the requirements of Suffolk Safer Waterway Act which becomes effective November 6th.

Additionally, a six-month free trial membership in the Smithtown Bay Power Squadron is offered to

course members.

Now is a good time to learn skills that will enhance your boating experience and fulfill your boater education requirements. Instruction is free with a nominal cost of $60 for course materials.
