ith the new school year kicking off on September 2nd, the Smithtown Central School District held its new teacher orientation from August 25th through 27th at High School West. More than two-dozen members of the teaching staff were welcomed to the district at a breakfast hosted by Superintendent Dr. James Grossane and members of central administration. Oil paintings and ceramic works are her media of expression. “With a strong belief that everything that is born, grows and withers away to be yet born again incessant change from one to another proceeds in an evolutionary cycle - clay has proved to be

an ideal medium for her expressions. Her love for color and textures in nature - internal and external, has proved to be an unlimited resource for the blank canvas” Pamela Waldroup - “A digital photographer/ printmaker on a lifelong search to find order in chaos through observation of the accidental series of commonalities that occur around us everyday, in every moment. Her Interactions series of photographs engages the viewer, the subject, and the surroundings caught in those moments.” Pamela received her BFA from Ohio University and her MA in drawing and printmaking from LIU, CW Post Center. Her work has been exhibited in national and local galleries and museums on Long Island. Constance Sloggatt Wolf - Constance is both an artist and educator. She trained in the Fine Arts at Pratt Institute

in Brooklyn (BFA) and Long Island University (MFA).” I study Nature first, searching for primary, universal forms and ideas, symbols that all human beings may relate to. Inspired by the visceral beauty of my materials, I approach the work openly tapping into this understanding of the natural world and allowing the act of painting to transform

Edward Brady, who retired last month after serving almost six years as commanding officer of the Second Precinct, which covers Huntington. Insp. Brady’s Suffolk County Police Department police career spanned 36 years, 14 of which were spent in various Second Precinct assignments. Also being honored from the SCPD is Officer Mark Collins. In March, Collins, a 12-year veteran of the force, was shot in the neck and hip a while chasing a suspected gang member who had fled after a traffic stop in Huntington Station. The suspect accused of shooting Collins is awaiting trial. Collins, who in 2008 was named

Second Precinct officer of the year and who previously had received a medal for helping save a man’s life during a house fire, has recovered from his injuries. The other honorees include: Sophie Sarro, a 101-year-old Huntington Station native who while trained as a seamstress worked during World War II helping to manufacture airplanes for Grumman Aircraft. She later worked in the machine shop at Republic Aviation, where she met her husband, Sal. A mother and grandmother, she is still active in Town senior clubs and in sewing robes and other items she donates to charitable organizations. Frank LaBarbara, a Korean War veteran and retired owner of an engineering and manufacturing company. He has volunteered for many years as a Eucharistic minister at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Northport. He

has also co-chaired the employment network program at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs church for more than 20 years. The Harris family, whose patriarch, Rufus Harris, an accomplished mechanic, overcame segregation in South Carolina, moved to Huntington and founded an automobile repair shop, Rufus & Sons, which was one of the first African-American owned businesses in Huntington. The shop included two generations of the Harris family and was in business for 40 years. The Sorrentino family, who have been fixtures on the Huntington business scene for many years. Andrea Sorrentino has operated a shoe repair shop in Huntington village for 35 years. His sons, Pasquale and Andre, own an auto body shop. The have been active in civic and charitable affairs, as well as in the Huntington Fire Department, where Andre Sorrentino is a commissioner. For each of the past five

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Student Spotlight IT ALL STARTS WITH A SEED SUBMITTED BY: PHILIP LANZARONE, AGE 15, WEST ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

Family Health Challenge It’s that time of the year when parents get ready for September, shop for back-to-school supplies, and consider how it’s possible that their children’s feet grew that much in just a year. All this careful planning and preparation helps to ensure a happy return to school. The American Heart Association (AHA) wants families to remember to also include healthy choices in their back-toschool plans, making sure that the healthy choice

becomes the default choice at back-to-school time, and year-round. To help raise awareness and make parents and caregivers more conscious of their lifestyle choices during Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, the AHA is launching the Life is Why Family Health Challenge™. The goal is to help parents take back the “controls” when it comes to meals and healthy activities, and help them feel empowered to make small moderations in their

lifestyle that will lead to bigger, heart-healthy changes down the road. Today, about one in three American kids is considered overweight or obese, and there has been a sharp rise in obesity-related problems in children like type 2 diabetes, which is usually seen only in adults. “When we look at heart disease statistics, the one that gets our attention is that 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes

like eating healthy and exercising more,” said AHA Long Island Board President, Scott L. Schubach, MD, Chairman, Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Winthrop - University Hospital, “The Life is Why Family Health Challenge was crafted to give families simple, quick, and fun weekly strategies to get healthier and prevent heart disease from a young age. These four categories will make a big impact on family health.”

The Challenge is broken down into four themed weeks on the American Heart Association Facebook page, listed as an event, and offers free tools and resources throughout the week in the forum. This online group also allows parents and caregivers to support and connect during the challenge.
