Rotary Guest Speaker
On Thursday, August 15th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Lisa G.Kropp, addressing the important issue of Early Literacy. Lisa’s presentation on Early Literacy referred to the skills that a young child needs to learn - before they can learn how to read and write. She mentioned that a strong foundation in early literacy skills such as reading, playing, writing, singing and drawing, help shape a child’s development and school readiness. Research has shown a clear connection between the lack of early literacy skills on both our economy and our educational systems. Also mentioned was the Card Your Baby Campaign,
a newly designed library program working with maternity wards in Suffolk County hospitals which will provide new parents the opportunity to: locate their public library; visit their library to apply for a library card (for themselves, their baby, or both) and to return the coupon they receive in the hospital to redeem it for the Card Your Baby Kit. The kit will contain a new rhyme book, a snack container, a bibliography of books, and any other promotional materials (newsletters, fliers) that a library would want to include to customize the kit for their patron. Lisa G. Kropp is the Youth Services Coordinator of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, where
she works closely with the children departments of Suffolk county libraries to help them deliver their best practices in library services for children, teens, and their families. She was previously the Head of Children’s Services at Half Hollow Hills Library and the Early Childhood Coordinator at Middle Country Public Library. Lisa is a regular contributor to the School Library Journal. The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise is a part of a diverse group of professional leaders working to address various community and international needs. Through community service and other means, their members help promote peace and understanding throughout the world. Generous Grant Received for their care. Last year, Catholic Health Services received a HEAL grant of 3.2 million dollars to begin development of a cross continuum of care. Catholic Health Services hopes to achieve a continuum of care for these special patients through collaboration between its members. A 10-bed pediatric rehabilitation unit at St. Charles Hospital will provide initial acute rehabilitation for children who recently experienced a catastrophic event with a goal of returning them home with support from a pediatric team of Catholic Home. Children unable to return home will be transferred to longterm care at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center (OLC). OLC’s pediatric ventilator unit will be a 22 bed pavilion built entirely for the pediatric population within the existing footprint of the nursing home. This
space will also include a child friendly outdoor recreation area. The educational, nutritional and clinical needs of these new pediatric residents will be provided within in a child-friendly environment. This will not be a unit for children embedded in a geriatric care facility. Rather, it will be a nurturing environment with its own discrete entrance, space, specialized staff, and program with the sole focus of quality care for children. “This funding from the O’Toole Foundation advances our efforts to develop this critical resource for children and their families,” said Joseph Tomaino, Executive Vice President for Continuing Care Division of Catholic Health Services, “The impact of injury or illness on these families is compounded by the painful separation that they must go through in order to obtain services.”

Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS), is pleased to announce that they have received a grant for $300,000 to help support the funding of the Children’s Care Pavilion for ventilator dependent children. This pavilion will address the urgent need for these services on Long Island. Additional grants and resources will allow Our Lady of Consolation to extend their clinical expertise and provide longterm care to a special population of ventilator dependent children. When a child living on Long Island becomes sick or injured and requires the long term assistance of a ventilator for breathing, there is at present no local comprehensive program to support them. These children must be relocated miles from home, often out of state

A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

Rebuilding Together Grant of Rebuilding Together. “Senior citizens and lowincome homeowners are among the most vulnerable in times of disaster and we are honored to be a partner with the Red Cross to help nearly 90 families get back on their feet.” As of July 2013, hardworking Rebuilding Together affiliates in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County, Jersey City, and Essex County have already completed more than 200 projects, assisting more than 375 families or individuals with the help of over 2,000 volunteers. “Recovery from a storm of this size takes time and help from many different organizations, not just the Red Cross, and we are pleased to support the programs of Rebuilding Together and other partners, and to continue to work with them to help people with their recovery,” said Jerry DeFrancisco, president of Humanitarian Services at the Red Cross. “We can help people and communities in a more comprehensive way when we pool our resources and services together in a coordinated way. This not only speeds recovery, but helps us engage the entire community in building the resilience we need as we face disasters of this type in the future.”

Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities. Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City will be providing free critical home repairs in many of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are safe, healthy and livable. Those eligible for services include lowincome families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Red Cross in the long term recovery of communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said John L. Fiegel, interim president and CEO

Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.04.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality.
Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. Participants schedule their own matches at mutally convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between September 14th and November 16th. The workshop was hands-on and provided educational uses for the new Windows 8.1 operating system which will be released in the fall. They enriched the learning experience with a trip to the Microsoft Retail Store in Huntington where they arranged an onsite visit to the classes by the techies at Microsoft.
Summer Prep Work Pays Dividends
As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school. Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break. Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first
quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.
Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

Donna and her husband Jim live in Northport and are the proud parents of three grown children. The Commack Board of Education appointed Donna Forbes as the new assistant principal at Burr Intermediate School, beginning on August 19th. Mrs. Forbes is a respected leader and educator in the Commack School District and the District’s lead reading teacher in grades K-5 since 2003. She is an enthusiastic teacher and mentor, and an outstanding educator who truly understands how to unlock the potential for learning in each child. An established innovator in instructional reading methods, Mrs. Forbes excels at reaching each student in her classes, and training her

New Hammock For Gibbons The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony
J. Morabito, Service Representative, Firematic Supply Co. in East Yaphank. Mr. Lambui built the new hammock and presented it to the Game Farm for the gibbons to use. “We are so thankful for Tom’s generous gift,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm. “We recently installed the hammock and the gibbon sisters immediately started enjoying it. It’s really wonderful!” A gibbon is a part of the
ape family, and spends the majority of its time in trees. Gibbons range in color from gray and black to brown. They have extremely long arms which help them balance and settle as they jump from tree to tree. They can jump more than 25 feet and land fairly easily. LIFESAVING ACTIONS - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized EMT Jon Desjardins with the Department’s EMT Medal and the Chiefs Medal, for his lifesaving actions on the Long Island Rail Road in October of 2012. While commuting to work, Desjardins assisted in the resuscitation of a cardiac arrest patient on the train, which contributed to the full recovery of the 53-year-old man. Battle Of The Books
A team of 10 Elwood students entering grades six through nine in the fall took part in the 17th Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books competition held at Stony Brook University on August 10th.
Competing as “The Elwood Things,” the team members were assigned eight books to read over the summer. They participated in weekly study sessions during which they quizzed one another on the books being read.
During the competition, the students tested their knowledge against other Suffolk library (school?) teams. The Elwood students came in third place for the region and were awarded first-place medals for “Best Spirit.”

HONORED FOR EFFORTS - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized the crew members for their actions in assisting with the birth of a happy and healthy baby girl while in transit to Huntington Hospital on May 13th. EMT Brian Hinton, EMT Mathew Simpson, and EMT Nicole Olofson all received the Department’s EMT Medal, and Firefighter Vincent Pastore and Rescue Squad Member Rose Marie Sholes received the Department’s EMS Medal for their efforts. Kukla, Fran and Ollie decided to take a trolley to visit their sister Molly and her little girl named Holly. But while they were on the trolley, a parrot whose name was Polly bit the nose of Ollie, who ran around the trolley, screaming... by gosh, by gum, by golly, I’ll kill that crazy Polly! When an officer whose name was Jolly observed the screaming Ollie, he threw them off the trolley, so they decided to visit Wally, a man who owned a collie.
