A photo booth will also be set up to create a complimentary baseball card for each participant. As a special component, the Heros 4 Our Heroes foundation will be honored for serving our military, fire, police and medical heroes since September 11th, 2001. “I am so excited to join Supervisor Wehrheim in honoring our community heroes with a free clinic for our youths. Our American heroes deserve to be celebrated and the Daniel J. Flynn Memorial Park, which honors a member of the community who was killed in action during the Vietnam War, is the perfect place to do so. To do so while also honoring Smithtown-based Heros 4 Our Heroes foundation for all the charitable work they have done is the perfect combination. Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families

The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. – a not-forprofit 501(c)(3) communitybased organization – has been serving Suffolk County since 1967. It is the county’s federally designated Community Action Agency, designed to assist low-income families and individuals. The agency’s mission is to promote a goal of self-sufficiency by broadening the minds of children, revitalizing communities, and assisting families and children in need through coordination of public and private resources. For more information, go to www.eoc-suffolk.com.

“I want to thank Senator Mattera and his staff for coming up with this truly memorable idea to give to the community. This is what Flynn Memorial was created for and I think Danny would agree. It gives me a great sense of joy to facilitate the opportunity for local boys and girls to learn from baseball’s legends and our own community coaches.

New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) and Town of Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim are teaming up to honor our community heroes with a free baseball and softball clinic for male and female players between the ages of 6 and 18. This fun event will be run by local school coaches and 10 former Major League Baseball players from the Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, Tigers, Dodgers, Pirates, Blue Jays, and Phillies.Theclinic will be held on Sunday, August 21st at Daniel J. Flynn Memorial Park, which is located at 29 Old Commack Road in Commack, from 10:00 AM through 1:15 PM. Lunch will be available for families and guests during the clinic and players will have lunch after. The event will include former Major League Baseball legends Frank Catalanotto, Art Shamsky, Oreste Marrero, John Doherty, Sal Agostinelli, Frank Tepedino, Fred Cambria, Adam Greenberg and Don DeMola. These former players will provide instruction to the young players at various stations throughout theAdditionally, day.

Moreover, we’re honoring Donato Panico and his incredible foundation Heros 4 Our Heroes, who have done magnificent work helping Veterans and First Responders for two decades. I’d highly encourage families to register their kids for this unbelievable occasion,” said Supervisor Ed Wehrheim. Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to Parentsit.” can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare.Tofind out if you are eligible under these new guidelines, please contact your local county Department of Social Services: Suffolk (631) 8543349, Nassau (516) 2278519. Greg W. Sill Golf Outing Success

Family and friends of beloved former Smithtown High School West social studies teacher Greg Sill recently raised nearly $60,000 at the first annual Greg W. Sill Foundation golf outing.Held at the Wind Watch Golf and Country Club, the day was made possible by the dedication and support of the volunteer golf outing committee, many of which are teachers in the district. With 108 players and just under 200 diners, folks enjoyed a sunny day together sharing stories and good times of the type of person Greg was. Greg was a treasured social studies in the Smithtown school district for over 20 years.

KING KULLEN MARKS 92ND ANNIVERSARY BY HELPING LONG ISLAND CARES - Long Island Cares CEO Paule T. Pachter (center) is surrounded by some of the 92 King Kullen employees volunteering at Long Island Cares this August to mark King Kullen’s 92nd Anniversary. King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. (Hauppauge, NY) is celebrating its 92nd anniversary this August. While much has changed in the world since Michael J. Cullen founded King Kullen in August 1930, the iconic Long Island supermarket chain remains privately held and family owned, with 27 King Kullen supermarkets and five Wild by Nature markets located throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. To mark the company’s anniversary, King Kullen employees have been volunteering this August at Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, helping to unpack and sort food donations, with the different food types then boxed into cartons which go to any of the 325 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and senior homes served by Long Island Cares.“When I mentioned to colleagues that our 92nd anniversary was coming up, many said they wanted to get involved,” explains Tracey Cullen, Esq., King Kullen Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Initiatives and the greatgranddaughter of King Kullen founder Michael Cullen. “King Kullen has a long history of supporting Long Island Cares. As a board member there, I’m very aware of the organization’s mission to serve Long Island’s hungry and food-insecure populations. To reflect our 92nd anniversary, we began with a goal of 92 employees volunteering. I’m proud to say we’ve surpassed that number.”“King Kullen is passionate about feeding the hungry,” observes Long Island Cares Chief Executive Officer Paule T. Pachter. “They have raised tens of thousands of dollars for Long Island Cares over the years, are involved in our food drives, and serve within our organization. We are honored to count King Kullen as a loyal friend and appreciate their commitment this August and always.”

According to King Kullen President & Chief Operating Officer Joseph W. Brown, a past Board President at Long Island Cares, the current employee volunteer effort reflects a passion that has been with King Kullen right from the start. “Michael Cullen opened King Kullen during the darkest days of the Depression,” reflects Brown. “Throughout the 1930s, he made sure that King Kullen was donating to area soup kitchens and helping those in need. That tradition has stayed with King Kullen for more than nine decades and will remain with us now and in theHeadquarteredfuture.” in Hauppauge, NY, King Kullen is recognized by the SmithsonianInstitution as American’s first supermarket. Also headquartered in Hauppauge, NY, Long Island Cares was founded in 1980 by singer-songwriter and activist, Harry Chapin.

Paws Of War Partners With Suffolk County Sheriff’s Dept. To Provide Free Microchipping And Pet IDs

Paws of War recently hosted a microchipping and pet identification service event at the non-profit’s Nesconset headquarters alongside the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s Pet Network and Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. The free event provided services to over 30 animals whose owners included veterans, first responders and members of the Long Island“Forcommunity.pet owners, especially veterans and first responders, their service animals are more than just pets; they are a support system and caregivers. During the summer it is easy for animals to wander and get lost. Through our microchipping and database program, and with the help of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, we can ensure that any lost pets will be found and returned safely to their rightful owners,” said Robert Misseri, Founder and President of Paws of War. The microchips, which are the size of a large grain of rice, are implanted under the animal’s skin behind the shoulder blades. For service animals, microchips are used to provide a permanent form of identification. The microchip can also identify and track an animal’s movements. In the event a service animal gets lost, you can use a microchip scanner to identify the pet’s owner. Through Paws of War’s database, owners can be contacted and have their animals safely returned.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is collaborating with St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park, to host a blood drive on Thursday, August 25, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm. It is at Travis Hall – Lower Level, behind St. Joseph’s at 59 Church Street. The drive is to benefit the blood banks maintained by Long Island Blood Services, which provides blood to hospitals throughout Long Island.Tobe eligible to donate blood, a person must be between the ages of 16 (16 with parental consent) and 76, (if older than 76, you need permission from your doctor), weigh over 110 pounds and not have had a tattoo in the last three months. Please bring a valid photo ID with you. LI Blood Services recommends that you eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Previous donors should bring their blood donor card with them. As a thank you for donating a pint of blood, each donor will receive a voucher for a free pint of beer, glass of cider, wine or soda at one of the participating breweries such as Destination Unknown Beer Co., Jamesport Farm Brewery, Riverhead Cider House, Long Island Beer Company, Tradewinds Brewing, Eastern Front Brewing Co., Ubergeek Brewing and others on Long Island and throughout the tristate“Hospitalsarea. are always in need of blood supplies so it is important that if you can donate blood to do so because one pint of blood can help save three lives. We just did a blood drive in June and I thank those who attended and hope you will return as enough time has passed to donate again,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. For more information, please call Legislator Trotta’s district office at 631-854-3900.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

The Suffolk County Sheriff Office’s Pet Network also houses a database where animals can be tracked and located. Using their database, they are able to detect and locate missing pets and send out alerts to the deputy sheriff’s department and through social media. “As Suffolk County Sheriff my priority is keeping residents safe, and that extends to the fourlegged members of our communities. I would like to thank Paws of War for the work they do for our Veterans and for partnering with us on these free pet safety events. Pets that are both equipped with a microchip and enrolled in the Sheriff’s Lost Pet Network have double the chance of being reunited with their family,” said Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. Through Paws of War’s Mobile Veterinary Clinic, the nonprofit gives service animals access to microchipping at no cost. Veterinary costs for service animals and pets are near an all-time high. Thanks to Paws of War’s programs, veterans and first responders have one less expense to worry about. The wellness of service animals is essential and allows them to assist owners who are suffering from the emotional and physical effects of war. In addition to microchipping and Pet ID services, veterans also receive free dog food, leashes, collars and other amenities. Elected Officials Congratulate St. James Troop 301’s Three New Eagle Scouts

ELECTED OFFICIALS CONGRATULATE ST. JAMES TROOP 301’S THREE NEW EAGLE SCOUTS - Attending the Eagle Scout Court of Honor are from left to right: New York Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick, Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr., Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta, Eagle Scouts Jack Irmscher, Ryan Seltzer and James Bryceland and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recognized Ryan William Seltzer, Jack William Irmscher and James Patrick Bryceland at their recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. The three scouts successfully completed all of the scouting requirements and their community service project for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. They all did a labor-intensive community based project. For his Eagle Scout project, Ryan Seltzer of St. James did multiple improvements to the office basement of the St. James Lutheran Church, which hosts the troop’s meetings. The renovations resulted in a safer exit, improved storage and a new area that will allow presentations and media viewing during youth group meetings and socialJackgatherings.Irmscher, also of St. James, renovated the storage room at the St. James Lutheran Church providing much needed shelving, cabinets, extra storage for educational and music equipment, as well as painting the room. In addition, he constructed an outdoor learning area with a patio awning and two picnic tables. Jack’s father is also an Eagle Scout. James Bryceland of Smithtown did his project at the Smithtown Historical Society where he replaced a temporary chicken coop with a permanent one that has an interior and a roof to protect the chicken from predators and inclement weather. At the ceremony, Legislator Trotta presented the three Eagle Scouts with a proclamation. “This is a very proud moment for these young men, their parents and family, as well as their troop leaders and fellow scouts. I extend my congratulations to all of them and hope that they will remain active in their community,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Juror Carol Fabricatore invited artists to enter works that captured the spirit, movement, emotions of their subject. We were looking for works inspired by life… works that conjured narratives…that took us to places we had never seen… or introduced us to people and places. Artists build their work through inspiration, references, sketches, models, underpaintings and other modes of planning. An artist’s Little Black Book is often a secret stash of intimate expressions, innermost thoughts, and experimental techniques that lay the groundwork for their final piece. Entrants were required to submit writeups digital images, sketches, etc. that showed the evolution of each piece they entered into the show. About the juror: Carol Fabricatore is an artist in the New York City area who is a great observer of all things and likes to approach creating narrative imagery beginning with an emotional connection to an idea. She often gravitates towards subject matter that might be seen in one’s peripheral vision or passed by on the way to something in the mainstream. She has produced art for books, magazines, newspapers, and projects for design and advertising firms. Carol has taught narrative drawing at the School of Visual Arts since 1994.
