Meet Guy. He’s a local business owner, former rock bassist, and current fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier. How can we help your small business save?

PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative

PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.

Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.

Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny. com/feedli. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.

“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people

to help people. In the past two years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout

the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school

feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”

Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

The food drives will take place on Fridays as follows:

·· Sept. 1 8 a.m. –3 p.m. Stop & Shop

- 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, NY

· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, NY

Representatives from PSEG Long Island and

Island Harvest Food Bank will be available at all locations to provide information on lowincome programs and money-saving energy efficiency options.

Island Harvest has a

need for specific items, including:

Nonperishable food: Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as lowsodium beans, vegetables,

International Overdose Awareness Day and Recovery Month Narcan Training

FREE Narcan Training Seminar Offered On August 31st

The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center will mark International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Recovery Month by holding a Narcan training event for the community. On Thursday, August 31st from 12PM to 1PM, there will be a free Narcan training seminar in the Community Room of Horizons Counseling and Education Center, located at 161 E. Main Street in Smithtown.

“Our communities are living in a time that fatal and non-fatal overdose has affected each individual directly or in-directly. Everyone knows someone who has overdosed either personally or through a friend, family member, coworker or acquaintance. With Fentanyl infecting our communities; awareness, prevention, treatment, policy and stigma relevant to loss of life involving the drug, are all examples of the importance of International Overdose Awareness Day and what the campaign targets throughout the world. At Horizons, we understand the effect overdose has on the person and their loved ones. Narcan is a lifesaving drug that can reverse opioid overdose and training like the one we are offering is valuable to the public in recognizing the signs and symptoms of and responding to overdose. Narcan administration is a simple method of emergency response that carries an immense lifesaving result.”

Services

On International Overdose Awareness Day, people and communities come together to raise awareness of one of the world’s most urgent public health crises – one that, unfortunately, is only getting worse. Having an outpatient drug and alcohol agency right in the township is an asset for the community. Additionally, learning the signs of an overdose can help save a life. The IOAD 2023 theme of “Recognizing those people who go unseen” is about acknowledging people in our communities who are affected by overdose but might go unseen in the crisis.

Narcan kits will be provided for free. Horizons Counseling and Education Center resource tables will be set up around the training area, filled with information about recovery services, the outpatient program and substance misuse prevention education. All are welcome to attend to get trained and to hear about the drug and alcohol treatment and prevention services that Horizons provides.

Space is limited and on a first come first serve basis. Residents can reserve space by scanning the QR code on the flier, contacting Horizons Counseling and Education Center at (631) 3607578, via email at kdevito@smithtownny.gov, or by registering online at https://events.r20. constantcontact.com/register/eventReg?oeidk=a07ejw82n5fab29a8f3&oseq=&c=&ch=.

About International Overdose Awareness Day:

Observed on the 31st of August every year, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use. International Overdose Awareness Day is convened by Penington Institute, an Australian not-for-profit.

International Overdose Awareness Day is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind. It began in 2001, led by Sally J Finn at The Salvation Army in St Kilda, Melbourne. Since then, communities, governments, and organizations work to raise overdose awareness about one of the world’s worst public health crises, and promote action and discussion about evidence-based overdose prevention and drug policy.

About Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Recovery Month: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Recovery Month is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidencebased treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible.

2nd Annual Greg Sill Foundation Golf Outing A Success

On July 24, more than 100 people gathered at the Wind Watch Golf and Country Club for the second annual Greg Sill Foundation Golf outing. The event was to honor the legacy of the late Greg Sill, the beloved Smithtown High School

West history teacher.

“The foundation started on the day of his funeral,” said Greg’s wife, Elizabeth Sill. “I got up and said his name cannot end here. His legacy must live on.”

Greg Sill passed away in March 2021. A GoFundMe page was

created by Elizabeth Sill to raise money for what’s now called the Greg Sill “Be the Coffee Bean” Memorial Fund. More than $60,000 has been raised in scholarship money for local students, including an annual $5,000 scholarship for a

Smithtown High School West and Smithtown High School East student.

At the golf fundraiser, locals participated in a lunch, golf outing and dinner, as well as purchased gift bags and raffles.

“The whole idea is to keep Greg’s legacy going,”

said Ashley Marchese, Smithtown High School West social studies/special education teacher and athletics coach. “You get 100 people to show up, that’s what makes it all worth it.”

Elizabeth Sill said there were plenty of newcomers

to the event this year, as well as plenty of Smithtown Central School District staff, including Smithtown High School East Principal Robert Rose and High School West Assistant Principals Annemarie Freund and Michael Freiberg.

Hoyt Family Keeps Family Legacy Alive At The Nature Preserve

The team at Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve welcomed Tom and Mitch Stokes, the sons of Barbara Hoyt Stokes, as they delivered fieldstones adorned with memorial plaques, honoring the legacies of their Mother, Barbara Hoyt Stokes and Aunt, Rosalie Chase Hoyt. On June 1st of this year Tom and Mitch Stokes drove from Massachusetts towing a utility trailer which contained large fieldstones, embedded with bronze plaques to pay homage to their Mother and Aunt.

“We are incredibly grateful to Tom and Mitch Stokes for their generosity, keeping the memory of their mother and aunt alive and for remaining involved in the Nature Preserves mission. Hoyt Farm is a wonderful refuge to build memories with family, to learn about our history, our natural habitat and the creatures we share our home with. Having the blessings of the Hoyt Family and witnessing their appreciation for the good work that the Nature Preserve team does daily there, means the world to the Town of Smithtown. We look forward to keeping our promise to the Hoyt’s, and future family generations for years to come.” -

The stones were installed by Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve’s staff; Director Jeff Gumin, Park Interpretive Specialist at Hoyt Farm, Sheryl Brook, Kate Murphy and Dominick Guadio in the memorial garden for Barbara that is next to the nature museum.

“Installing the plaques with the staff was a memorable experience for Mitch and me. The creation of the Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve and the way its mission has been carried out over the years has inspired my lifelong work as an environmental advocate. I have always appreciated the town’s commitment to the preservation of this unique place and the dedication, inspiration and leadership of the staff, especially that of the current crew. Along with our siblings and our St. John and Hoyt cousins, we thank Jeff, Sheryl, Kate and Dominick for their ongoing stewardship of Hoyt Farm.” -

Barbara and Rosalie grew up on Hoyt Farm, with their siblings Nancy Hoyt St. John and Edwin C. Hoyt Jr. Their parents Edwin C. Hoyt Sr. and Maria Louisa Hoyt purchased the Farm in 1910 and operated it as a commercial orchard through WWII and later, on a more modest scale, through the 1950s.

Farm is a special gem tucked in-between big highways and suburban homes. To be able to nurture wildlife, educate the public, and promote conservation efforts in such a busy world is a dream for us all. We are truly honored to be the caretakers of Hoyt Farm and to be able to carry on the legacy of the Hoyt Family.”

“The Hoyt Family created a vision for this park many years ago and we take great pride in fulfilling it. Hoyt

Hoyt Family Keeps Family Legacy Alive At The Nature Preserve

Continued From 11

- Park Director Jeff Gumin, & Park Interpretive Specialist at Hoyt Farm, Sheryl Brook (on behalf of the Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve Team)

The inscriptions on the plaques read: “In memory of Barbara Hoyt Stokes, 1912-1965. An artist and lifelong student of nature, she loved these woods and sought to protect them.” and “In memory of Rosalie Chase Hoyt, 1914-2006, Physicist, Teacher, Environmentalist.”

“The family is especially grateful to the Farm staff for their dedication to educating and inspiring a love of nature in the next generation.”

A Brief History of the Hoyt Family Farm: The Town of Smithtown purchased the property in 1965 from Maria Hoyt, and the 133 acres of land developed into Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve. Prior to the Town’s acquisition of the preserve, Edwin C. Hoyt purchased the home in 1910 from Willard Wicks. The Hoyt family had a successful apple and peach tree orchard, on approximately 350 acres known as Crooked Hill Farm. The Hoyt’s apples and peaches were sold across the Island and the Boroughs of New York, from the Bronx to the Hamptons. Today, the Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve Team, led by Jeff Gumin maintains the remaining 24 apple trees on the Town’s property, without the use of pesticides on any of the vegetation in the park.

Today the team at Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve works to keep the Hoyt Family legacy alive and well with various educational programs, events, concerts, and historic tours of the Hoyt House and grounds. Educational programs range from marine, wildlife and indigenous plant life on Long island, to Native American artifacts, and maple sugaring classes. Additionally, the preserve boasts beautiful nature trails, pollinator gardens, mature oak forests, pastures, ponds, the picnic grounds, playground & pavilion and is home to historic buildings and monuments such as two World War I cannons, formerly located at Town Hall, the Hoyt House and the Water Tower, which was recently restored by the Cosentino Family in honor local Veteran, Smithtown Resident and Builder; John Baker.

Hoyt Farm is located at 200 New Hwy in Commack, NY. For Questions about educational programs and events at Hoyt Farm call: (631) 543-7804.
