information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. BOSCO MAKES EAGLE SCOUT - Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) had the opportunity to honor Matthew Ryan Bosco for his Scouting achievements earlier this year. Matt, through much hard work and dedication, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank and honor bestowed upon a Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. Every Scout must complete a project that benefits the community in order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Matt chose to plan and construct a Hobbit House Play Area at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. More than 30 Suffolk County teenagers earned medals of honor at the Legislature’s 2019 Distinguished Youth Award ceremony, marking the second year of the program aimed at engaging local youth. For the 31 medal recipients, the July 17 ceremony at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge celebrated their completion of the yearlong Distinguished Youth Award program, through which youth ages 13 to 18 work with local officials and mentors, connect with their communities, and set and work toward goals for their own personal development. Participants are awarded a medal based on the number of categories they complete. A bronze medal is awarded to participants who complete two of the four program areas, while a silver medal is awarded to individuals who complete three of the four areas. Participants who successfully

complete all four areas are awarded the highest level of achievement, a gold medal. This year, 21 participants took home a gold medal, seven earned a silver medal, and three achieved a bronze medal. Free Safety Classes For Licensed Teen Drivers Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station), as chair of the Public Safety Committee, is pleased to inform residents that the Suffolk County Police Department is again offering its free “Crash Course in Crash Avoidance” classes for teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 18. Designed to supplement training already learned from DMV, defensive driving and driver education programs, this 2-hour course teaches new drivers how to anticipate

and avoid dangerous road situations. Each session features a short classroom lecture, followed by a live demonstration on the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC). There are 10 different sessions to choose from between August 5 and 9, all taught at the Suffolk Police Academy, 110 Old Country Road in Westhampton. They started a campaign to encourage alumni to come forward with information about their military service to be featured on the wall. They created a flyer, QR code and sent out messaging in the local papers and social media to seek submissions. Although the students initially hoped the project would be complete before last Memorial Day, or at the least before they graduated, the number of submissions was so great, the idea kept growing. So far, the district has received more than 160 submissions and will continue to accept them. Adding new alumni to the wall will be an ongoing project. “We have submissions

from a wide variety of military, from those who served in the Vietnam War to those who just graduated last year,” Havranek said. The large mural in the front of the Smithtown High School West building was installed in early July, and Smithtown High School East will feature a similar tribute. Plaques of each of the “heroes” will be mounted along the walls, featuring the name, branch of service and year of graduation. The students also solicited additional information from the alumni, which may be featured in a future digital library. “It’s really nice to see our vision come to life,” added Raymondo. Once the plaques are mounted in both of the high schools, the district plans to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony and invite the alumni in to celebrate around Veterans Day.

More than three dozen PSEG Long Island interns, including Megan Drake of Hauppauge, recently stepped away from their roles in engineering, finance, corporate communications, legal and other departments to support the company’s volunteer efforts. The interns joined president and COO Daniel Eichhorn in planting seeds, watering saplings, weeding, mulching and tending Island Harvest Food Bank’s Giving Garden in Brentwood. Last year Island Harvest’s two dozen gardens produced 600,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits that was distributed to Long Islanders through its food bank. Before he joined the students in the fields, Eichhorn shared with the summer intern class the importance of giving back

to their community, no matter where they work in the future. “It is important that our interns experience giving back to the community during their internship here, because community service is such a big part of who we are at PSEG Long Island,” said Eichhorn. “We support our customers in ways that go beyond providing safe, reliable power; we connect with them through their interests and causes as well. Last year, our employees volunteered more than 26,000 hours, giving back to causes throughout Long Island and the Rockaways.” “Interning at PSEG Long Island has provided me with so many new opportunities,” said Megan Drake, PSEG Long Island intern and Hauppauge resident. “Volunteering with Island Harvest gave me the chance to give back

to my community and support one of the many organizations PSEG Long Island works with. Annual Summer Bash!

On Monday, July 15th, The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau held their Annual Summer Bash! Over 200 parents and children enjoyed a beautiful evening swimming at the Town of Smithtown Landing Pool. Participants enjoyed complimentary pizza dinner, music, and prizes donated by local businesses. Duck Donuts in Hauppauge donated

over 230 fresh, delicious donuts so everyone could enjoy a sweet treat after swimming! A big thank you to the Town of Smithtown Recreation Department for providing the Life Guards and use of the facilities. Over 25 Middle School and High School Town of Smithtown Volunteer Corps members helped to serve pizza, and run the event.

Participant families donated over 40 backpacks that will be given to less fortunate, homeless Long Islanders later this summer. Thank you to all of the volunteers, and all of the families who spent their evening with us!!! Thank you to all of the generous donors who helped make the evening so special!

Local Boy Scout Leaders Honored The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual fellowship dinner and presentation of the Spark Plug and District Award of Merit recognitions on Thursday May 27 at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. The Matinecock Scouting District serves 2,093 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge in the western section of the Smithtown Township. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the District Award of Merit. In addition, other adult

recognition awards were presented. The recipients had been nominated by members of their Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews and part of this was kept as a surprise until the presentations. In 2019, volunteer Scouters were surprised to be recognized for their efforts in scouting and their community with Spark Plug Awards, while the names of the three District Award of Merit recipients had previously been announced. Three scouting volunteers in the Matinecock District that received the District Award of

Merit for outstanding service to Boy Scouting, their local community, and to their religious affiliation were recognized during special ceremonies as the highlight of the evening. Escorted by previous recipients of this prestigious award and presented with a plaque and a blue and silver recognition “knot”/patch to be worn on their scouting uniforms. PSEG Employee Volunteers Team Up To “Stamp Out Hunger” Several groups of PSEG employee-volunteers, including Colleen Lee and Michael Calandra, both of Commack, have been hard at work at the Island Harvest food bank center for food collection and distribution in Hauppauge helping to sort through nearly 500,000 pounds of food donated by Long Islanders for distribution to families in need. This very large donation was collected by letter carriers as part of its 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign. Stamp Out Hunger is an initiative of the National Association of Letter Carriers. The day before Mother’s Day each year, U.S. Postal Service employees collect donated non-perishable food items at homes along their routes. The collected food is donated to area food banks, like Island Harvest, and packed up for area families in need. Without volunteers, like those from

PSEG Long Island, the task would be daunting. “Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees each year volunteer their time at Island Harvest Food Bank,” said Suzanne Brienza, PSEG Long Island director of customer experience and utility marketing. “This volunteer opportunity was even more special because our employees were helping their neighbors on Long Island, while participating in a national event to fight hunger.” PSEG Long Island employees routinely volunteer their time to support a variety of Island Harvest’s events and activities like various sort and pack opportunities, as well as staffing its annual turkey drive, tending the Healthy Harvest Farm and rescuing good, edible food at restaurants and stores and delivering it to food pantries and kitchens. Island Harvest says this is

Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state. When New York State communities were ranked by the number of pedestrian crashes that occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest number of crashes of all communities in upstate New York and Long Island. Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19).
