Stadium Field Trip
n July 11th, the residents of St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center enjoyed a fun-filled day at Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals while the residents enjoyed the sites, sounds and the great food. For many of the residents, this was their first time visiting the new stadium, and others reminisced about attending New York Yankee games in their past. A great time was had by all in attendance.

Dance Festival A Success Internationally recognized dance companies and fastrising choreographers shared the picturesque stage of the 19th annual edition of Fire Island Dance Festival on July 19th-21st, raising a record $393,647 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. For the third year in a row the festival set a fundraising record, surpassing last year’s all-time high of $374,260. In its 19 editions, Fire Island Dance Festival has raised $3.3 million for the most vulnerable among us, helping to ensure they receive life-saving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. The festival, performed outdoors on the shores of the Great South Bay in Fire Island Pines, included world premieres of works choreographed by Kyle Abraham, Pontus Lidberg, Jeremy McQueen and Josh Prince. Humorist, actor and writer Mo Rocca returned for a second year as
host, this time sharing his dance prowess in a whimsical, Al Blackstone-choreographed version of “Turkey Lurkey Time” from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. Rocca is a regular on CBS Sunday Morning, star of Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli and a featured panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! This year’s Fire Island Dance Festival featured more than 50 professional dancers entertaining standing-roomonly crowds with ballet, modern, contemporary and Broadway dance. “It’s humbling to see, year after year, the support of the Fire Island Pines community, our generous donors and sponsors, the immensely talented dancers and choreographers and our committed core of tireless volunteers” said Denise Roberts Hurlin, founding director of Dancers Responding to AIDS. “When we started this event I never dreamed that so many would continually join us in this fight, which is as important today as it was 19

The dance was once described by Battle as a deconstructed exploration of his fascination with the tango. · Three exuberant dancers from Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC delivered “o2joy,” a playful, contemporary dance piece set to great American jazz music that expressed the pure love of dance with lighthearted humor. · The Broadway Dance Lab, in a number choreographed by founder Josh Prince, drafted six men to celebrate the repeal of the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in an exuberant theatrical piece honoring soldiers’ right to serve and to love. · Evidence, A Dance Company, brought each performance to a joyous conclusion with “Torch,” a celebratory jubilation that brought audience members to their feet. The number was created by Ronald K. Brown, who choreographed the recent Broadway revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. · Fresh from its debut this spring, the Christopher Wheeldon-choreographed “A Place for Us” featured Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck, principal dancers at New York City Ballet. This intimately romantic pas de deux illuminated the real-life couple’s chemistry, offering the audience a rare opportunity to witness their artistry up close. · Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion premiered the uplifting “When We Take Flight,” a departure from Abraham’s usual introspective intensity featuring eight dancers weaving on and off stage in stunning sheer tunics designed by Reid Bartelme. · Lar Lubovitch Dance Company presented the male duet from “Concerto Six Twenty-Two” which became an anthem for the dance community in the early days of the AIDS crisis. The piece emotionally showed a relationship between the men where the gentle intertwining of arms and hands felt as powerful as the grandest leaps. · Pontus Lidberg explored his love for and fascination with water through seamlessly fluid movement that mirrored the changing tides of the Great South Bay, culminating with a breathtaking solo moment of him gazing out at the stunning vista beyond the stage. · Jeremy McQueen emerged as a choreographer with great promise in his tour de force “Only the Beginning” set to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ No. 1 hit “Can’t Hold Us.” In sexy couture by Eric Wintering, eight empowered dancers leapt, battled and triumphed in an unforgettable performance. · Paul Taylor Dance Company brought us back to the 1960s and the summer of love in a solo excerpt from “A Field of Grass,” effortlessly performed by Robert Kleinendorst who captured the hippie feel of the time with an ease of movement set to the music of singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Keigwin + Company presented a crowd-pleasing array of Keigwin’s high-energy and quirky favorite dances for a special performance July 19 as part of an exclusive festival kick-off event for Leadership Supporters at the Albert Lepage Pavilion at Whyte Hall. On Thursday, July 25th, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was presented with an American flag and plaque from members of the TWA Flight 800 Family Association and the IGHL Foundation at the TWA International Memorial site at Smith Point County Park. The inscription states, “Presented to Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco By the Families of TWA Flight 800 With Heartfelt Gratitude For All His Help.” The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office plays a significant role in cleaning and maintaining the memorial site each year. The work is performed by
county inmates, under the strict supervision of Sheriff’s deputies, as part of the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP). Sheriff DeMarco has always been a strong proponent of SLAP and in assisting with the maintenance and upkeep of the site. The TWA Flight 800 Memorial was dedicated in 2002 to the victims and families affected by the Flight 800 crash that killed all 230 aboard on July 17th, 1996. Frank Lombardi, Board Member for the TWA Flight 800 Family Association stated, “The Families of TWA Flight 800 and IGHL would like to thank Sheriff DeMarco for his
continued support. The SLAP Team has become an integral part of the maintenance efforts at the TWA Flight 800 International Memorial at Smith Point County Park.” “I am pleased that we have been able to contribute in some way to help the victims’ families of the TWA Flight 800 crash. It is an important international memorial site, and I believe we should do all we can to ensure it is well maintained out of respect to all who lost their lives and were touched by this tragedy,” stated Sheriff DeMarco.

Since I was a little kid, my dad has told me about his first car, a 1972 Chevy Blazer. He spoke about that car with so much pride. He loved every rust-covered inch of that deathtrap. It cost him sixhundred dollars, and got him where he needed to be. It wasn’t fancy, but he had earned it. This year, young mothers received gifts of books from the Nassau Reading Council, to get them started on their children’s early literacy. Student Wendy Blanco was honored with the distinguished George Farber Outstanding Student award and attended a ceremony earlier this year. At the
intimate commencement ceremony, program alum Rosa Alvarado from the Class of 2007 spoke. “TAP gave me the freedom to focus on my classes, knowing that my child was being well cared for,” Alvarado reminisced, lauding her “understanding teachers, who helped me to
graduate and rooted for me to succeed.” She then spoke of her hard road after high school and the challenges she faced – and overcame. “I’m making it,” Alvarado said, “and I know that you can too. You can do whatever you want with your life. It’s your choice. Go make your dreams your reality.”

The next step was to repair the puncture dents, damages, tears and cracking with a heated spatula and an adhesive that physically stabilizes and strengthens the canvas. He filled and painted the damaged areas to match the surrounding colors. Textural differences in the surface of the painting made it impossible to conceal all of the damaged areas. Katlan applied a final, overall layer of nondiscoloring resin varnish to unify the surface. Little is known of Dubbels’s life, Gress said. He was born in Amsterdam in 1620 and worked as a painter of seascapes and winter landscapes from circa 1641 until his death in 1676. (Some historical sources list his lifespan as 1621-1707.) “A lot of Dubbels’s work was attributed to another artist and it is very rare to find his paintings in the United States,” Gress said. “Much of his work is in collections in London and Paris. Our painting, original to Mr. Vanderbilt’s collection, may be one of the few in this country.”

Hendrick Dubbels, View of Boulogne, c. 1670 Oil on canvas, 36” x 55” Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Centerport, NY The conservation of the work, View of Boulogne by Hendrick Dubbels (16201676), was performed by the accomplished conservator Alexander Katlan and financed by a $5,000 grant from the Conservation Treatment Grant Program of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, a regranting agency of the New York State Council on the Arts. Katlan began the project in November 2012 in his painting-conservation studio -- temperature- and humidity-controlled like a museum gallery -- in Flushing, NY. The project took nearly six months as intervals were required between steps and some steps had to be repeated. Katlan returned the

Journey Of A Lifetime By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Where to begin… First trip abroad… first time on a plane – ever… first time away on vacation with 12 members of the family – or, the “traveling circus,” as I like to call it… So many memories, so many column topics… How does one encapsulate a nine-day, eight-night whirlwind cross-country excursion around Ireland, home of (at least a portion of) my paternal ancestors? To start, it was quite the action-packed adventure, from the first wakeup call of each morning right on through to the final toast of the evening. In between, there was no shortage of breathtaking scenery to take in, of history to absorb, of culinary
choices to sample, all the while experiencing it with family – as well as the other members of our tour group fortunate enough to ride along with the Ryan Family Magical Mystery Tour. Being the photog that I am, I was most looking forward to capturing the entire journey on camera, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. And that I did, perhaps a bit excessively, as my final total (minus many deletes along the way) came in just shy of 800 pictures. But being able to preserve it all – the sights and sounds, the candid moments, the vain attempts to gather everyone for “just one more” group photo… you can’t put a price on that. I may never travel to Ireland again, and maybe not
anywhere with the same cast of characters – which was why this trip was such a “mustgo,” despite my own lack of plane travel experience. You only live once, right? And, in the end, it was exactly as I expected, exciting and thrilling and adventurous and memorable in every way. And now that I have a passport, it sure gave me the bug to expand that itinerary to other countries that I’ve always wanted to see. Hmmm… where to next? But future plans aside, all the months of preparation, both at home and at work, certainly paid off in the form of a precious memory I will always carry with me. And if ever that memory starts to fade, I have about 800 or so photos to refresh it!

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that $200 million is available to fund requests from healthcare and human service providers and other community-based organizations following the impact of Superstorm Sandy. The funding is made available by the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental Social Services Block Grant to cover necessary expenses
resulting from the storm, including social, health and mental health services for individuals, and for repair, renovation and rebuilding of health care facilities, mental hygiene facilities, child care facilities and other social services facilities. “During and after Superstorm Sandy, New York State’s health and human service providers performed critical work for New Yorkers, and they
continue to be essential resources to communities recovering from the storm,” Governor Cuomo said. “These organizations serve the needs of many of the State’s most vulnerable residents including our seniors, children and low-income families, and in their line of work, they have also suffered financial losses and damage to their facilities from the storm. This funding will provide
the support they need to continue helping their communities, and I urge those impacted to apply for this assistance.” To address the needs of these critical health and human service providers and the populations they serve, New York will distribute $200 million in federal Sandy SSBG funding through a public and transparent request for proposals. “Most kids leave camp with a T-shirt. Ours leave with a new outlook on life.” Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation presented Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E., a free two day children’s bereavement camp held this year on Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th. The event takes place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport with the goal to help grieving children of Nassau and Suffolk counties and their caregivers heal from their loss in a safe, fun and healthy environment. The camp is christened “Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E.” in memory of Robert L. Sweeney, who died while being cared for by Good Shepherd Hospice in February of 2002. Celebrating its tenth summer of operation, Camp H.O.P.E. welcomes grieving families of all faiths to share their grief
experiences with others. The program is open to families who were served by Good Shepherd Hospice as well as from the community at large. Children participants are between the ages of five and seventeen and are required to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at the camp. Paralleling the children’s progress over the two days, adult caregivers also meet at Camp Alvernia. The adult program offers a variety of discussion and support groups, workshops, and educational materials, giving participants a chance to share their stories and concerns with one another. In doing so, adult attendees also learn more about both their self-care and fulfilling the needs of their grieving children. The camp is staffed by the professional members of the Good Shepherd Hospice Bereavement
Department as well as trained volunteers from both the hospice and the community. The camp program includes recreational games, arts and crafts, and grief work activities, including a “grief walk” for peer discussions with professional staff group leaders, and a closing memorial ceremony with a white dove release. The dove’s arc in flight circling the harbor twice before departing, representing a way for each child and caregiver who attends the camp to send their wishes skyward to a loved one. On July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its third annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Seventy golfers took part in the event, which raised $70,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care. Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown. After playing a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes.
The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families

Twelve smiling New York City children boarded buses on July 19th, headed for the Western Suffolk County area, to reunite with their host families at the bus arrival in Commack. Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB
found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided
to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According
to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit
bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We
encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

The Rotary Club of the Moriches held its 45th annual Duck Race & BBQ at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on July 13th. As part of the event, the club held a special duck race in which someone had the chance to win $1 million. However none of the preselected ducks finished in first or tenth place and so the prizes went to the top three winners. Part of the proceeds went to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck. Helping Children In Need Headquartered at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Talon Air, Inc., premier provider of luxury private air transportation, worked closely with not-forprofit Patient AirLift Services (PALS) to fly seven children who have experienced traumatic burns to The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp in Union, CT early this week. The camp, which provides services for children ages 8-18, is supported by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation and is the only one of its kind in the Northeast. Accompanied by two adult counselors, the seven children, ages 11-16, were driven from Canada across the border to Massena, NY where they were flown by Talon Air to Bradley, CT near the camp. During their week-long stay, the children are participating
in activities focused on building self-esteem and self-confidence, overcoming anxieties, and adapting physically and socially to their injuries. Since 2011, Talon Air has partnered with PALS to assist in getting essential healthcare services to children and adults who are not able to endure commercial travel, have limited financial resources, or live in an area where toplevel care is not available. Military personnel and their families are among the many people who have benefited from this program. Southampton resident and Stony Brook Foundation Trustee Dorothy Lichtenstein has made a $1 million gift to Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs. The gift was announced on July 17th during the annual Southampton Writers Conference opening night, which featured a conversation about writing with former PBS News Hour anchor and novelist Jim Lehrer and his wife, novelist Kate Lehrer. Ms. Lichtenstein, President of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, is a longtime supporter of Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs; first as a frequent audience member at events and then as a writing workshop participant. “The growth I’ve witnessed in the last decade has been nothing short of amazing,” said Ms. Lichtenstein, citing new graduate programs in theatre, publishing, visual arts, and digital filmmaking, a presence in Manhattan, and programs designed to train young writers and artists on the East End. “This gift reflects my confidence in President Stanley’s leadership and the University’s commitment to excellence in the arts at Stony Brook Southampton. Respondents were asked to identify whether in academic year 2012–2013 they would be offering a master’s in nursing degree through Internet-based distance education courses. Between the start of data collection in late July 2012 and the fall 2012 closing date, 280 institutions (59 percent) replied, with 101 (36 percent) reporting they planned to offer an online master’s in nursing degree program. Stony Brook University has been ranked eighth on U.S.News & World Report’s Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs list for 2013. Northport resident Marc Salmin recently donated a painting he made to McPeak’s Assisted Living to show the facility’s staff members his appreciation of the way they care for his father, Alex. Mr. Salmin’s father has been a resident of McPeak’s since 2011. Mr. Salmin recreated “Louisa in the Outside Studio,” which was originally done by William Starkweather, an American Impressionist painter. Mr. Starkweather started his artistic career in the late 1890s as a student at the Art Students League in New York City. He frequently took painting trips through the Northeast, including New York; Eastport, Maine; and Grand Manan Island,
New Brunswick, Canada. His artwork can be seen today in the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Hickory (N.C.) Museum of Art. “I recreated this painting because I admire William Starkweather’s work. He is not a very wellknown artist, but he was influenced by other famous Impressionist painters the same way I was influenced by him,” Mr. Salmin said. “I donated this painting to show my appreciation to the McPeak’s staff. I could not have asked for a better assisted living facility to take care of my father.” Mr. Salmin studied computer graphics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After graduation,
he worked as a professional airbrush artist in Colorado. He is currently an art teacher at St. Francis Preparatory High School in Queens. “We are so grateful for Mr. Salmin’s generous gift,” said James McPeak, Owner, McPeak’s Assisted Living. “We strive to provide outstanding services with our residents’ health, safety, comfort and general welfare in mind. Rising Stars Celebrated The talented teens in the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2013 have reason to celebrate this summer. Not only did students receive their high school diplomas, but many of them will be financing their higher education with monies earned from scholarships and grants. Thirty-seven of this year’s graduates collectively garnered more than $5.5 million. LIHSA, named “Best Art School” for the past three years, is the first step these students take toward success in their dream jobs. For many of them, being accepted to a world-renowned college or conservatory to further their studies brings them closer to their goals of attaining careers in the arts. Making sure they receive the scholarships and grants to make those dreams a reality is just part of what the teachers at LIHSA do each and every day. In addition to helping their students prepare for auditions, organize portfolios and complete college applications, the teaching staff also steers
the aspiring artists — whose interests range from dancing, singing and painting to playwriting, directing and designing sets — toward all the specialized honors, awards and opportunities available to them. All that hard work has paid off handsomely. This year’s graduates have made some compelling achievements. Film students Brenda Cespedes and Erick Urquilla debuted their documentary “The Spirit of Long Beach,” about Hurricane Sandy’s devastating effect on that community. The film was received at the Long Island Film Festival. Dance student Liesl Jaye made it to Broadway, performing in “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” this year and joining the cast of “Hello Dolly” in the fall. Liesl is also one of three LIHSA students, along with theater students Matthew Kunkel and Emily McPherson, to be named a Scholar-Artist by Newsday and the Long Island Arts Alliance. Film student Alec Urbach earned a bronze medallion in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of
Community Awards, for his international education project. “I know that, to all of us, this place is magical,” student speaker Matthew Kunkel reminded his fellow graduates of their now alma mater. “LIHSA is not just a school, it’s a home. I challenge all of you to go beyond expectations, and remember who you are and what you learned here. Our future is in front of us and, because of LIHSA, there is nothing that will stop us.”

Damon Runyon 5K On the morning of Sunday, August 18th, thousands of sports fans, runners, walkers, cancer survivors, and their friends and family will gather at Yankee Stadium to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Damon Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium. More than dozen of the runners are cancer survivors from Long Island who are running to help fund the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. These courageous Long Islanders are traveling from towns as far as Manorville to Great River to Baldwin for this very personal and worthy cause. The Runyon 5K has become one of New York’s most unique summer events and is the only charitable run/walk that uses the iconic Stadium as its course. Since the inaugural event in 2009, the 5K has raised more than $2 million for the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. Participants can register to run or simply donate to support a one of the runners at www. runyon5k.org. Participants must pay a $50 registration fee and meet a $60 fundraising minimum. Friends, family and supporters will have a chance to watch the race from the Delta SKY360° Suite overlooking home plate and
meet the Damon Runyon scientists their contributions help support. The first heat of competitive runners will take off from the start line inside Gate 4 at 9:30 a.m., followed by heats of recreational runners and walkers, with the last heat taking off in the early afternoon. Participants will wind

Egan, President and CEO of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. “Our 5K participants have made breakthroughs possible – it’s as simple as that.” The Runyon 5K is the latest chapter in the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s long history with the Yankees. After the Foundation’s establishment in 1946, Joe DiMaggio was on its Board of Directors and Mickey Mantle was an active fundraiser. Damon Runyon himself was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist, revolutionizing how the game was covered and often reporting on Yankees games. Last year’s event drew a capacity crowd of 4,000 participants – from 5-78 years through the legendary ballpark’s concourses and ramps, old and traveling from 35 states.
