Inaugural Paige Keely Foundation Golf Classic

By Noelle Stanuch

noellestanuch@longislandmediagroup.com

The Charity of the Month for August is

Ronald McDonald House Charities® New York Metro www. rmhcnym.org

The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry. Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.”

INAUGURAL PAIGE KEELY FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC - On Monday, July 11th, the inaugural Paige Keely Foundation Golf Classic and Dinner was held at the Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James. Paige was a first grader at St. James Elementary School who passed away in 2018 at the age of 6 from an undiagnosed brain arteriovenous malformation. “This community, they glued my family back together.” said Paige’s mom and president of the foundation, Gina Keely. Gina says she is also working with Smithtown schools to get training for school nurses to help identify signs and symptoms of all potential brain injuries. Photos courtesy of Smithtown CSD

RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened. Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children. The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital

care. RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day. Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families. Throughout this month, you will learn about more about RMHC New York Metro, including profiles of some of their volunteers, the grassroots leadership coming from Long Island Communities that helps support the organization and the aggressive expansion plans for Suffolk County to help families there that are in need. To learn more about this organization in the meantime, please visit www. rmhcnym.org.

Families can travel hours for lifesaving treatments. Families without accommodation near a hospital can endure long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings left at home and for some, no place to sleep. They’re far from family and friends who give them support. However, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro, a 501c3 non-profit organization, keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love.

Town Officials Dedicate Long Beach Concert Stage In Memory Of Beloved Employee, Don Misuraca Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim recently took to the stage at Long Beach to unveil a plaque atop of the new concert stage, formally dedicating it to Parks Labor Crew Leader (II,) Don Misuraca. On Friday, July 8th, Supervisor Wehrheim led the opening ceremony together with Councilman Tom Lohmann, Town Clerk Vincent Puleo, Superintendent of Recreation Tom McCaffery and Director of Parks Joe Arico. In addition to hundreds of community members who packed the beach to enjoy the popular weekly concert, members of the Smithtown Parks Department, Public Safety and the Highway Department were on hand to commemorate and honor their colleague and friend, long time Town employee Don Misuraca, who passed away suddenly in January. The Naked Truth Band, founded by Misuraca’s former colleague and Smithtown Highway employee Joe

Cannone, performed after the ceremony. “Donny loved his job. He was a good friend, an outstanding crew leader and was always first to volunteer to help with community projects such as beach cleanups, working with scout troops, and the youth bureau. I believe he’s here with us in spirit on this perfect summer evening, smiling at his many friends and coworkers who are here with us tonight in his honor.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Don Misuraca was a Smithtown native who began his career with the Town of Smithtown in April of 1993 working for the Highway Department. He transferred to the Parks Department in 1999 as a Laborer where he worked primarily on maintaining the town’s ballfields and beaches. Don worked his way up through various promotions over the years. In May of 2021, Don Misuraca was promoted to Labor Crew Leader II. He devoted much of his time

to ensuring Smithtown’s beaches and parks were kept in pristine conditions for the residents. “I think this crowd here tonight really represents the life and legacy Donny has left us with. He was an outstanding role model for the younger guys, always went above and beyond the call of duty and was a friend to all who made his acquaintance. He loved this town, its people and he loved what he did every day. We miss him tremendously… This tribute is fitting and unforgettable, much like Donny.” - Joe Arico, Director of Parks, Buildings & Grounds The newly constructed concert stage was completed with a roof structure in March of this year, to protect the bands and equipment from weather elements. The plaque reads: This concert stage is dedicated to our friend Donny Misuraca, Smithtown Parks Department Employee

families to discuss this difficult topic.” - Kelly DeVito - Youth Services Coordinator, Horizons Counseling and Education Center The seventeen students who participated in this year’s Pizza Box Top event adhered 2,500 prevention messaging stickers on carry-out bags from several local participating Pizzerias including; Mema’s in Commack, Branchinelli’s in Hauppauge, Mama’s Brick Oven in Hauppauge, Gino’s in Kings Park, Monte’s in Smithtown, and Buona Sera in Smithtown. The carry-out bags were branded with colorful prevention stickers which read; “Your Decisions Matter Preventing underage drinking is everyone’s responsibility.” Sergeant Carissa Siry from the National Guard Counterdrug Task Force spoke with the volunteers about the Social Host

Law, underage drinking, and the dangers of the Internet, prior to this awareness activity. The New York Social Host Law can impose liability on a social host who provides alcohol to a minor, should that minor become intoxicated and cause injury to another person as a result of that intoxication. DID YOU KNOW: Alcohol is the most widely abused drug by young people. During these times when more people are spending time at home, alcohol use is increasing. For more information on this and future youth empowerment programs, contact Kelly DeVito at Smithtown Horizons Counseling & Education Center at (631)360-7578 or Stacey Sanders at the Smithtown Youth Bureau at (631)360-7595.

This youth-led initiative works to educate and change adult attitudes regarding providing or selling alcohol to minors. Seventeen youth volunteers devoted their time to adhering a total of 2,500 prevention stickers to carry-out bags at participating pizzerias. “This is one of our favorite events because it gives families an opportunity to discuss the importance of preventing underage drinking with the young people in their lives. Three Schools Receive Grants From Long Island Regional Planning Council Three schools on Long Island have received financial grants from the Long Island Regional Planning Council as part of the 2021 Long Island Water Quality STEAM Challenge – a competition which encourages students to design and develop projects to reduce rain runoff and nitrogen pollution on school grounds. The Long Island Regional Planning Council developed the STEAM Challenge in partnership with the Department of Environmental Conservation to connect students, teachers and communities to the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan--a transformative multiyear initiative to make meaningful reductions in nitrogen levels. Nitrogen is the leading cause of water quality deterioration Long Island and the Long Island Water Quality Challenge is a great opportunity for schools to play a role in protecting local water resources while improving school grounds. Sanford H. Calhoun High School, in the Bellmore-Merrick School District, New Hyde Park Memorial High School in the Sewanhaka schools district in Nassau County, and Commack High School in Suffolk County were each awarded $2,500 grants as part of the 2021 Challenge. “The health and sustainability of our ground and surface waters depends upon all of us taking small but significant steps to prevent nitrogen and other pollutants from contaminating the water,” noted John Cameron, LIRPC Chairman. “It is essential for students today to recognize the challenges our region faces in protecting the quality of our water systems and the schools participating in the 2021 Water Quality STEAM Challenge have

established an active and ongoing outdoor classroom for all students, present and future, to learn and reflect on this important issue.” “New York State is taking numerous steps to address the nitrogen pollution that has degraded the waters of Long Island and collaborating with key partners is instrumental to our success,” said New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos. ”The Long Island Regional Planning Council, in partnership with DEC, conducted this STEAM Challenge to raise local awareness and encourage young New Yorkers to become involved in the solution. The nitrogen problem is multifaceted and impacts all Long Islanders, but through hard work at the local, county, State and federal levels, our water quality will continue to improve both now and for future generations.” The Long Island Water Quality Challenge was first offered in 2019 to all schools in Nassau and Suffolk Counties with an invitation to develop and design projects for their school grounds which will either reduce the use of fertilizers/pesticides and water consumption, or devise methods to collect and treat water runoff from the school property. A panel of water quality experts – Sue VanPatten, NYSDEC; Olivia Calandra, Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District; (NCSWCD) Corey Humphrey, Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District (SCSWCD); Sally Kellogg, South Shore Estuary Program; and Elizabeth Cole LIRPC– served as evaluators of the projects. “The Long Island Water Quality Challenge is a great program that the Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District is proud to

support,’ said Olivia Calandra Conservation Technician at NCSWCD. “It is important to develop locally driven solutions to help protect Long Island’s crucial water sources. Getting kids interested in environmental issues at an early age is essential because they are our future!” CALHOUN HIGH SCHOOL At Calhoun High School, students designed a rain garden which features native plants to help filter out pollutants or excess nutrients from stormwater runoff before it enters the surface waterways or recharges into the ground water supply. The garden will provide a natural habitat for birds and butterflies and will serve as an ongoing classroom for students in future years. “At a time in world history when the discussion of future potable water sources is perhaps more important than at any time in the past century, the STEAM Challenge created by the LI Regional Planning Council allowed our students to work on an authentic project in an area in which they are naturally interested as they understand it can affect their futures. We are extremely proud of the work done by Ms. Pefanis and the students involved with the rain garden project at Calhoun High School,” stated Scott Bersin, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. COMMACK HIGH SCHOOL At Commack High School, a rain garden and rain collection barrels will encircle the school’s existing greenhouse in the main courtyard to serve as a natural habitat for pollinators and to filter rainwater runoff.

STUDENTS TODAY, STEWARDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT TOMORROW - Commack High School was one of three schools on Long Island to receive a $2,500 grant from the Long Island Regional Planning Council in the 2021 Water Quality STEAM Challenge, to construct a rain garden with rain collection barrels in the school courtyard. Pictured (l-r) Back Row: Interim Supt. David Flatley, Executive Director Dr. Jordan Cox (who will be Commack’s Supt. on July 1), BOE President Steven Hartman, BOE Trustees William Hender, Gus Hueber, Susan Herman, and BOE VP Justin Varughese. Front row: Director of Science Jill Johanson, Mentor Andrea Beatty, Awardees Soyoun “Ashley” Moon, Lakxshanna Raveendran and Melina Nicou, Science Teacher/Mentor Jeanette Collette, and Richard Guardino, Executive Director, Long Island Regional Planning Council.

The garden will provide ongoing educational opportunities for Biology and Environmental studies to incorporate the garden into curriculum. “We are so proud that our students have taken a proactive approach to protect the future health of our community and the Long Island region by analyzing the damage done by untreated stormwater runoff,” said David Flatley, Interim Superintendent. “Their careful consideration of treatment methods and in-depth proposals to remedy the amount of pollution moving into our waterways from the grounds at Commack High School was chosen because it “promotes project-based learning in STEAM and has helped students develop a greater understanding of how their classroom curriculum can be applied to protecting Long Island’s crucial water resources – with a specific focus on reducing or eliminating

nitrogen pollution.” Congratulations and thank you to Soyoun Moon, Melina Nicou and Lakxshanna Raveendran and to the LIRPC for a chance to turn their research into reality.”

celebrated. We would like to thank the Long Island Regional Planning Council for recognizing the students and their teachers for their dedication, time and all of their efforts.”

NEW HYDE PARK MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL At New Hyde Park Memorial, multiple rain gardens will be installed on campus and students are developing an extensive outreach and education plan to teach their peers and the larger community about nitrogen pollution and prevention. “We are so proud of the students and their teachers for all their hard work on this project over the many months,” stated Principal Richard Faccio. “It is wonderful that their commitment to playing a role in protecting local water resources, while improving the New Hyde Park Memorial school grounds, did not go unnoticed and is being

Winners of the 2022 grants will be announced shortly by the LIRPC panel, and a new round of applicants will be invited later this year for 2023 awards. Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

weather may approach in the next three to seven days. The public should monitor the situation and stay tuned for further updates.

Advisory With an advisory, weather conditions are not overly serious but could prove inconvenient. Outlook This is the least serious Individuals should be weather alert. It usually cautious and prudent means that hazardous when preparing supplies

or traveling. Watch During a weather watch, there is an increased risk of a hazardous weather occurrence, though the timing or location is still uncertain. This is when it is essential to practice an evacuation or preparedness plan and stock up on any lastminute supplies.

Warning The most serious of the weather impact notifications, a warning constitutes an imminent or likely event. The weather may cause a threat to property or life. Immediate action to stay safe is necessary. While these alerts are based on the severity of impending weather, it is important to note that the NWS will not necessarily

follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest. Over the past two and a half years, the pandemic has put a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. In fiscal year 2020-2021, Island Harvest Food Bank distributed more than 18 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 15 million meals – to Long Islanders facing food insecurity. That’s an 83%

increase over fiscal year 2018-2019. “While summer is often a time of plenty for most of us, many Long Island families continue to struggle to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Island Harvest Food Bank is once again pleased to team up with PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for the second annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection events this summer to help address the needs of Long Islanders who continue to struggle with food insecurity. We are exceptionally grateful to PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for their caring and generosity now and throughout the year.” PSEG Long Island also kicked off the campaign with a $1,000 donation. Combined with the Stop & Shop gift cards, these donations make up the first

4,000 meals collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals. Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate non-perishable food items. Collection bins and a contactless, drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location. PSEG Long Island, Island Harvest Food Bank and Stop & Shop has kicked off PSEG Long Island’s second annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive. Seven PSEG Long Island Power to Feed Long Island employee ambassadors, along with anti-hunger advocates and government officials gathered at the Stop & Shop in Massapequa to donate food and money, and call on Long Islanders to take action to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, collection drives will be set up at several Stop & Shop supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate non-perishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 30,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Island families struggling to put food on their tables. This goal recognizes Island Harvest’s 30th anniversary this year. “We are kicking off our second annual Power to Feed Long Island campaign with Island Harvest and Stop & Shop because hundreds of thousands of our neighbors still need our help,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Last year, PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island created a venue for Long Islanders to help fight food insecurity, and they responded with bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food for their neighbors. Thanks to their generosity, we exceeded our 21,000-meal goal in 2021. This year, we are proud to donate and we encourage everyone to continue to be part of the solution, because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. This initiative is just one of the many ways PSEG Long Island and our employees support our communities.” Hundreds of thousands

the needs of Long Islanders is at the core of both Long Island Cares and PSEG Long Island’s missions,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Programs Officer at Long Island Cares. “We are grateful for the ongoing partnership of PSEG Long Island in ensuring that seniors are provided with the resources needed to live independently and healthy.” “Supporting the communities where we live and work is part of PSEG Long Island’s mission,” said John Keating, PSEG Long Island’s manager of Economic and Community Development. “We are pleased to partner with Long Island Cares to help

reach specific groups of our neighbors who may be struggling with food insecurity. These resource fairs will provide important education about assistance programs, as well as nutritious, locally sourced produce and other food, to help eliminate hunger from their lives.” Long Island Cares began its outreach to seniors in 2020, with its Support Our Seniors (SOS) program. In 2021 more than 18,000 food-insecure seniors at senior centers and housing authorities were served 166,000 meals. Both the number of seniors and meals served represented a 28% increase over 2020.

Long Island Cares provides emergency food and supplies to 250,000 Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity. In addition to the food bank location in Hauppauge and the more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other locations it provides food to, Long Island Cares operates five of its own food pantries, in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Hampton Bays, Freeport and Bethpage. PSEG Long Island operates the Long Island Power Authority’s transmission and distribution system under a long-term contract. PSEG Long Island is a subsidiary of Public Service

Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG) (NYSE:PEG), a publicly traded diversified energy company. “Field Of Heroes” Youth Baseball Clinic With Former Major League Baseball Stars At Daniel J. Flynn Memorial Park Town of Smithtown Supervisor, Ed Wehrheim and New York State Senator, Mario R. Mattera have teamed up to present a free baseball and softball clinic for male and female youths, at Daniel J. Flynn Memorial Park. On Sunday, August 21st, children ages 6-18, are invited to hone their craft with ten former Major League Baseball stars and local school coaches. The clinic runs from 10:00 AM through 1:15 PM and includes a complimentary lunch for families, participants and guests. The Hero’s 4 Our Heroes foundation will be honored for serving our military, fire, police and medical heroes, since September 11th, 2001, during the closing ceremony. “I want to thank Senator Mattera and his staff, for coming up with this truly memorable idea to give to the community. This is what Flynn Memorial was created for and I think Danny would agree… It gives me a great sense of joy to facilitate the opportunity for local boys and girls to learn from baseball’s legends and our own community coaches. Moreover, we’re honoring Donato Panico

and his incredible foundation, Hero’s 4 Our Heroes, who has done magnificent work helping Veterans, and First Responders for two decades. I’d highly encourage families to register their kids for this unbelievable occasion.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Major League Baseball legends; Frank Catalanotto, Art Shamsky, Oreste Marrrero, John Doherty, Sal Agostinelli, Frank Tepedino, Fred Cambria, Adam Greenberg, and Don DeMola will coach and inspire youth players at various stations throughout the day. The first 500 registered participants will receive Rawlings MLB baseballs provided courtesy of Major League Baseball. A photo booth will be set up to create a complimentary baseball card for each participant. Lunch will be available for families and guests during the clinic. Youths will have lunch after the clinic. To Register: Visit FieldofHeroes YouthBaseballClinic.eventbrite. com and sign up your child. Flynn Memorial Park is located at 29 Old Commack Rd. Commack, NY 11725 About Hero’s 4 Our Heroes Foundation

The day after 9/11 the Panico’s wanted to do something to aid our rescue workers so loaded up a mobile catering truck full of food from their market in Smithtown and drove to Ground Zero. They cooked for ten straight days at the World Trade Center site and continued to provide free meals to first responders and frontline workers for the next 21 years. Every September 11th, Hero’s 4 Our Heroes prepares and gives away over 3,000 heroes to firefighters, policemen and veterans. During the holidays, Hero’s 4 Our Heroes distributes turkey dinners on Thanksgiving and ham or turkey dinners for Christmas at the VA Medical Center. Since September 11th, 2001, the Panico’s have served as an inspiration to the people of Smithtown by serving thousands of complimentary meals to frontline workers at hospitals, nursing homes, veterans facilities and dozens of other entities, in honor of the thousands of heroes who serve us every day. In 2021, the Suffolk County Legislature enacted legislation designating June 12 as “Women Veterans Appreciation Day” in Suffolk County. Each legislator selects one female veteran from his/ her district to recognize on that day at a ceremony. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Legislators and their honorees could not meet in person, but could participate via a Zoom

meeting where the veterans were acknowledged and thanked for their service. For the 13th Legislative District, Legislator Trotta selected Mary Flatley of Smithtown who served in the US Marines, and during a weekend drill, was injured. Subsequently, Mary was honorably discharged. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, she counsels other veterans with the

(NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also

reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs. Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and services as nonsufferers. The average monthly health cost of a migraine sufferer is 60 percent higher than that of people who don’t suffer from migraines, according to the National Institutes of Health. According to The Migraine Trust, migraine often occurs for the first time in teens and young adults but is most common in the 30-something age

group. Who Can Help Specially trained neuromuscular dentists can perform a dental procedure that can help. They use special equipment to find the optimal resting position of the jaw and create an orthotic—which looks like an athlete’s mouth guard. When inserted into the mouth, it can change your bite. Many treated this way find their chronic migraines are prevented. Why It Works That’s because chronic moderate to severe headaches, including migraine, are a common indicator of malocclusion, or a bad bite, commonly called TMD or jaw joint disorder.
