Memoir in the Making As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous
musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.
It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. Lucien can turn light switches on and off, open and close doors and retrieve dropped objects. However, one of his most important jobs will be to provide constant companionship for Duane.
Duane and Lucien returned to Kings Park after completing Canine Companion’s recent Team Training Class, an intense, two-week course held at Canine Companion’s Northeast Regional Center in Medford - one of six such centers nationwide. The Northeast Regional Center serves a 13-state area from Maine to Virginia. Each student who attends Team Training held at each center four times a year - is paired with a fully trained, working assistance dog like Lucien, and is taught to work with his/her canine companion. The training course consists of daily lectures, exams, practice and public outings. Duane and Lucien are settling into a routine back in Kings Park. Duane says, “Lucien is a very special dog and I hope to have many wonderful years with him.”

Summer Program Prep Smithtown Central School District had been abuzz with activity this summer as students are taking part in programs housed at Smithtown Elementary School. For six weeks in July and August, K-8 students work in small class settings as part of the Extended School Year Program. Students
Crowds shuffeled onto the Nesconset Gazebo Park grounds Tuesday night to hear the tribute of Paul McCartney and the Wings and to take part in the festivities of the evening’s concert. Concert goers were greeted by two special guests, Congressman Lee Zeldin and Olympic Speedracer Maria MichtaCoffey. Lee Zeldin presented the park with a POA-MIA
flag to commemorate those who are imprisoned or have gone missing for the freedom of Americans everywhere. After a team of U.S. Army soldiers presented and raised the flag, Leighann Guardino a student in the Smithtown School District sang the National Anthem to kick things off. As always Long Island Cares was in attendance to collect food for those in need amongst
our communities. Congressman Lee Zeldin introduced Long Island’s very own Olympian Maria Michta-Coffey, and the crowd donated generously to help her family make the trip down to Rio to see her compete for our nation. After the crowd generously helped raise money for Maria, Maccination put on a spectacular show that had many of the concertgoers dancing.

AWARD OF MERIT - The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual District Awards and Recognitions Dinner to honor adult volunteers at Huntington Elks Lodge. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the District Award of Merit for noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside of Scouting, or both. Those so recognized in 2016 with the District Award of Merit Recipients of the Matinecock District, Boy Scouts of America were: Troop 34’s Michael Shef and Edie Pullizzotto and Troop 125’s Stuart Weinberg.

Spark Plug Honorees The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual District Awards and Recognitions Dinner to honor adult volunteers on Thursday, May 26th, at Huntington Elks Lodge. The Matinecock District serves over 3,000 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge school districts in western Smithtown Township. Members of their Cub Scout Pack or Boy Scout Troop had nominated possible recipients of the Sparkplug Award, and honoree names were kept as a surprise until the presentations. Presentations were made to those individuals who “are the spark plug of the engine, who get things started and going and are an inspiration to the youths and adults that they work with and encourage.” Each recipient is truly the “spark” that helps ignite the motivation and thrust within that unit. In 2016, Spark Plug Awards were presented to 7 Scouting
volunteers are: Cub Scout Pack 66 (South Huntington) Deidre Hill; Cub Scout Pack 5 (East Northport) Dominic Ranieri; Boy Scout Troop 218 (Huntington) Tammy Camagnola-Levinsky; Boy Troop 343 (Hauppauge) Gary Fortmeyer, Donna Sparacino, Peter Crociata, and Dr. Stanley Lamberg. In recognition of his serving the Matinecock District as the District Advancement Chair for more than 20 years, having served on the Boards of Review for 1,000 Eagle Scouts, Herb McGrail of Northport was presented with a plaque of appreciation. Considering that less than 3% of Boy Scouts nationwide ever earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and that Mr. McGrail was involved in some form for each and every one of their Eagle Scout Community Service Projects (from advise to mentoring to actually working on the projects), this is no small feat. After more than 60 years in scouting, Joe Bond of Commack stepped down (“retiring while I’m still
young enough”) from his continuous years in the service to the youths in the Boy Scouts of America. In recognition of his serving the Matinecock District (and to the previous Dan Beard District, prior to the merger of scouting districts in the 1990s), Mr. Bond had held a great variety of positions (including District Commissioner, District Chair, Scoutmaster, Roundtable Commissioner, District Committee Member, District Training Chair, creator of the Matinecock District’s Scouting Spirit Trophy, and Cubmaster), Eagle Scout Joseph Bond of Commack was presented with a special recognition plaque that reads “ In Grateful Recognition of Your Exceptional Leadership and Outstanding Service – Six Decades of Service.” He has made many presentations over the years to other Eagle Scouts at their Eagle Courts of Honor, reminding them that “once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
EAGLE HONOREE - Boy Scout Troop 125 of Commack held an Eagle Court of Honor at the Commack United Methodist Church to honor Scout Joshua Isaac who earned the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout by completing a labor intensive community-based Eagle Scout project. Joshua’s project was to provide signage and parking improvements at Temple Beth David in Commack. Joshua built and installed a new welcome sign at the Temple. In addition, he cleared debris from the parking lot which provided eight extra spaces, as well as repainting the curbs and speed bumps and adding one way arrows in the parking lot.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta introduced Cherie Lehmann, who sang the National Anthem at the July 21st Dennis Cannataro Summer Concert Series at the Smithtown Library. Mrs. Lehmann resides in Kings Park with her family and is a music teacher at the
Sachem School District. “I have known Cherie and her family for a while and have heard her sing with her band and thought the audience would appreciate her voice and judging by the applause she received they did,” said Legislator Robert Trotta. The concerts are held
each Thursday night at 8 p.m. on the front lawn of the Smithtown Main Library through August 18th and feature tribute bands. The Sunrise Rotary also collects non-perishable food and toiletries for the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry.

Children with health insurance are more likely to get the care they need, when they need it - from regular physical checkups, to treatment for sore throats and earaches, to care for chronic illnesses like asthma. Further, CHP isn’t just medical coverage,” Vavrinec continued. “A lot of people don’t realize that CHP comprehensively addresses medical, dental and vision care.” With more than 78,000 members, Fidelis Care is the largest CHP plan in the State. Fidelis Care earned an overall rating of five stars - the highest rating available - in the New York State Department of Health’s 2015 Regional Consumer Guides to Managed Care for Medicaid and Child Health Plus. Even if your family must pay the full premium due to income requirements, Fidelis Care still offers some of the lowest rates available. If you wish to enroll your child, you may do so any time of year. You may enroll online through the NY State of Health website, nystateofhealth. gov. If you apply by the 15th of the month, coverage for your child will begin on the first of the following month. Online research aside, one of the most convenient ways for New York State residents to learn more about and enroll in CHP is to visit any one of Fidelis Care’s area community offices. A knowledgeable and compassionate Health Benefit Representative will sit down with you, answer questions and discuss options, all in a language you understand. Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara Rhindress to teach social studies at the Middle School and special education at the High School. “Ms. Rhindress was chosen from a highly qualified field of candidates. We are excited about the skills
and enthusiasm that she will bring to the students in our District,” stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dennis P. O’Hara. Rhindress previously served as a social studies teacher at George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, New York, and prior to that was a social studies teacher at
the School for Language and Communication Development in Richmond Hills, Queens, New York. She received a Master of Arts in History from St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Secondary Education from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, New York. Rhindress holds a New York State Professional Certification: Social Studies Secondary Education and a New York State Professional Certification: Special Education. Students Thrive Smithtown Central School District is making learning fun for its students who are taking part in a variety of camps and programs running throughout July and the beginning of August at Accompsett Middle School. Four different camps are housed at Accompsett – Middle School C.A.M.P. (Character Academics Mindset Preparedness), English as a New Language, SCOPE Summer Enrichment and the Friends of Smithtown
Music lessons. Student-musicians have time to hone their skills with one-on-one and group lessons sponsored by the Friends of Smithtown Music. Students who are new to the English language are also polishing their expertise during the summer months as well. The SCOPE progam mixes fun and learning as students participate in hands-on activities in the arts, technology and science. C.A.M.P students are
spending the summer building their academic, creative, social and emotional skill-sets. They are learning about creative arts, mindbody medicine, positive psychology, nutrition, relationship development, resilience training, stress reduction, and movement and exercise. For example, they are practicing yoga, meditation, biofeedback technology and working collaboratively.
