Suffolk Warns of Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to warn the public that scammers posing as IRS agents have been calling residents in Suffolk County demanding payments and threatening arrest by County Sheriffs if they do not pay. Several residents called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office this morning to report the fraudulent activity.

The IRS posted a public alert about these types of scams on its website and offered the following information and advice to anyone receiving unsolicited calls from people claiming to be IRS officials:

The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official.

Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a telltale sign of a scam.

The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

• Demand that you pay taxes without giving

Protect Yourself Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via a phishing email.

Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying.

They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 gift from the Treiber Family Foundation to support

his personal and family fortune into the nation’s largest foundation in support of alcoholism research and treatment.

In the following four decades, the foundation contributed $13.5 million, and Mr. Smithers himself donated an additional $27.9 million, to programs to fight alcoholism.

Today, LICADD provides substance abuse screenings, brief interventions and referrals to addiction

treatment, as well as professionally-facilitated family interventions, relapse prevention programs and anger management services to adults and adolescents.

True Colors What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through.

This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden.

They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style.

The best of the best from the entire world gather to compete every year to decide who will become the World Champion. 30,000 spectators are expected to be in attendance for World Class Finals alone!

Volunteers Needed The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking to diversify its volunteer base by especially inviting young women and women of color who have had breast cancer to become part of its volunteer corps.

“Our goal is to be there for all women with breast cancer concerns,” says Alida Rubenstein, the program’s volunteer/ hotline coordinator. “That means that our volunteer base needs to be as diverse as the people who are calling us.” Rubenstein

says that young and younger women are calling the hotline and it is helpful for them to be able to speak with young women who have been through what they are experiencing.

The 3-session free training will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays in September: September 14th, 21st and 28th, from 5 to 8 p.m.

“We’ve streamlined our training,” says Rubenstein, “to make it easier for busy young women to participate.” Once the women complete their training, they are able to

select hours that fit into their schedules. Their jobs will be to answer the hotline and provide information and emotional support to callers. They can also do outreach at community events.

While previous skate showdowns were entertaining events held on portable mini-ramps, Skudin says moving the contest to the Recreation Center facility was an easy decision. “The contest was always fun,” Skudin said. “But this year we’re stoked to bring a real skate contest to a real skate park.” The Bowl & Street Jam will be held July 16th with the juniors contest starting at 6 p.m., and the pro event following at 8 p.m. Accompanying the skating will be a number of bands including local reggae standouts Jahstix.

Putting the finishing touches on this year’s event will be a pair of parties on July 16th and 17th. The first event will be open to all ages and will be held between 6 and 10:30 p.m. at the Bridgeview Yacht Club. The familyfriendly affair will feature dunk tanks, kids’ activities, popcorn machines, raffles and music. The following night there will be a 21+ blowout summer bash at Pop’s Seafood Shack and Grill (15 Railroad Pl., Island Park.) Will Skudin, 5th-ranked big wave surfer in the world and the founder of New York Surf Week, announced recently that this year’s festivities will be the biggest and best yet.

The eagerly-anticipated event - which honors the memory of Long Beach surf legend George “Geeza” Geiser - has always helped shine a spotlight on New York’s emerging surf scene, but this year, said Skudin, attendees will enjoy an expanded itinerary of surf and skate contests, a new Hurley Surf Center, nonprofit surf outings, film premiers, raffles, kids activities and games, a boardwalk vending village and two NYSEA summer blow-out parties for people of all ages.

Surf Week 2016 will

start July 13th and run through July 17th. This year’s centerpiece, the NYSEA Open surf contest, will be held on the most promising wave day of the event. Because of the fluid start time, competitors and the public will follow nysurfweek.com via email and social media to stay updated on conditions and potential start times.

This year’s contest is open to the first 32 online entrants and the top prize will be $3,000. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium

Additional surf-centered events will include not-for-profit outings for Adelphi University’s Camp Abilities and the Henry Viscardi School, whose students cope with severe physical challenges. These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of

experienced instructors.

Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week.

Not all the fun will require pulling on a rash guard, of course. There will be a vendors’ village on the Long Beach Boardwalk between Edwards and National Boulevards during the days, and many surf films will be screened for the first time on Long Island on the evening of July 14th at the Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, Island Park.

At a ceremony at Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle, Legislator Leslie Kennedy congratulated several young members of the Royal Rangers Outpost #149 on attaining the Gold Medal of Achievement, the highest honor available in the organization.

Skylar Fallon, Connor Fallon, Russell Fallon, Elias Velez-Maldonado, and Andrew Frey, Jr. were presented with the award, an honor that is only achieved by 1% of Royal Rangers worldwide.

A Christian youth organization similar to the

Boy Scouts of America, the Royal Rangers promote the mental and spiritual growth of young Christian men. The Gold Medal of Achievement in particular requires a Royal Ranger to demonstrate his mental, social and spiritual development through a capstone project.

“Today, many of us parents do everything to accelerate the educational and physical growth of our children for the sake of their futures,” Legislator Kennedy remarked after the ceremony, “but it is also true that we often neglect their social

and spiritual growth.

Five Northwell Health hospitals have been recognized for their commitment to healthcare information technology with HealthCare’s Most Wired awards for 2016 from Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center, along with Southside, North Shore University, Huntington and Lenox Hill hospitals were named with 24 other hospitals and health systems in New York state and 414 nationwide for using information technology to engage

patients and offer them services remotely via telehealth, according to the results of the 18th annual Hospitals & Health Networks survey released July 6th.

The annual assessment looks at how hospitals use information technology to enhance patient safety and quality-of-care priorities as well as their public health, administrative processes and workforce decisions.

Flag Day Presentaion

Board of Trustees, with the flag pictured. It is the newest item in the Huntington Historical Society’s collection and will be included in a new exhibit opening at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building later this summer. The exhibit, entitled Before Suburbia, Huntington’s “Guilded” Age, will focus on civic minded Huntingtonians and the organizations they were involved in, between 1890 and the 1940.

Following the presentation of the flag, Mr. Kissam presented two photographs from the Huntington Historical Society collection of Troop 1 on one of their hikes to Oyster Bay to visit President Roosevelt. Mr. Kissam corroborated the

legend of Troop 12 as the original Troop 1.

Troop 12 meets on Wednesday evenings at the United Methodist Church on West Neck Road in Huntington. Troop 12 is a boy-run Troop, under the watchful eye of trained adults. The boys elect new leaders on a periodic basis and learn leadership by doing. The boys in the Troop choose their program for the year which includes camping, hiking, canoeing, biking and skiing at a variety of places on and off Long Island. They learn to pack and dress for all types of weather conditions. Other annual activities include running a hot dog stand at the church fair and cooking and serving at their annual pancake breakfast.

The Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival week 4 starts Tuesday, July 12th and runs through Sunday, July 17th. Join at 8:30 p.m. every night, except the Tuesday Night Family Series, which starts at 7:30 p.m. The performances are held at the Chapin Rainbow Stage, Heckscher Park located on Prime Ave & Main Street in Huntington.

This Philadelphia-based dance troupe has created a new style of hip hop that they use as a vehicle to inspire hope and bring about positive change in people’s lives.

On Saturday, July 16th, come to experience the fastpaced and touching O Sole Trio performing a classical crossover, “Pavoratti to Pop!” A vibrant, New Yorkbased, musical ensemble

featuring the lush voices of soprano Erin Shields, baritone Giuseppe Spoletini, along with the versatile and virtuosic David Shenton on piano and violin, O Sole Trio takes you on a musical journey, revealing how Italian Americans influenced the American popular music scene throughout the decades. Swingtime Big Band will end week 4 on Sunday, July 17th with a 20-piece authentic swing band comprised of master interpreters of music from the Swing Era (mid-1930’s through early 1950’s), and offers an authentic music experience that you can’t find anywhere else! Performing original arrangements of Big Band Classics from the Great American Songbook, this ensemble brings to life both the style and the spirit of this music for 21st century audiences to experience in living color.

Scoring a Touchdown The Devlin Football Camp welcomed Friends of Karen as one of its charities, offering scholarships to families assisted by the organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families.

“The people at Friends of Karen are so committed to helping these families during a very

difficult time,” said Jeff Koutsantanou, Director of Devlin Football Camp.

“We’re always pleased to be able to partner with them on behalf of special children in our communities.”

Friends of Karen’s services are provided to children, from birth to age 21, at no cost, living in the New York tri-state region, diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. Families need

assistance to meet the extraordinary demands of their child’s illness and Friends of Karen works to ensure the well-being of every family member.

In 2015 alone, the organization assisted 1,679 children with services.

On Flag Day, June 14th, members of Huntington’s Boy Scout Troop 12 and Scoutmaster Leer Leary presented to the Huntington Historical Society a BSA Troop Flag from Troop 1. When the present day Troop 12 was established before World War I, it was designated as Troop 1. After the War, the troop was inactive.

When the troop reapplied to BSA in 1923 they were designated as Troop 12.

Troop 1 was known to hike from Huntington into Oyster Bay to visit Colonel, and President, Theodore Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the County is the recipient of $300,000 in federal grants from the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) for the use of the plane-to-train connectivity study between the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road Station and Long Island MacArthur Airport.

The Suffolk County Legislature approved the appropriation of the funds at the general meeting held on June 21st.

“This is another step toward spurring economic development in the Ronkonkoma Hub which will create thousands of new jobs in Suffolk County and provide a more convenient public transportation option to our residents,” said Suffolk County Steve Bellone.

“For years, our region has been complacent with the lack of infrastructure and public transit options to key destinations.

Long Island MacArthur Airport is an easy and convenient airport for residents to access, and with a planeto-train connection to the

rail road, you can be in New York City in under an hour.”

Suffolk County was awarded the federal grant funding from the United Planning Work Program, which was developed by the NYMTC. The County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning will help to administer the study, which will analyze the best ways to increase connectivity between the Ronkonkoma Station and Macarthur Airport. The study will evaluate land use opportunities, economic development and benefits associated with trainto-plane public transit connections. In addition, alternative options will be developed in regards to costs, construction time, environmental impacts and efficiency of use.

The total cost of the connectivity study is estimated at $375,000.

The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning will provide matching funds of $75,000 for the study, which was already included in the County’s 2016 Operating Budget.

The study complements Suffolk County’s Innovation Zone initiative that was introduced by County Executive Bellone in 2015. The I-Zone plans to connect existing and planned transit-oriented downtowns – such as the Ronkonkoma Hub – to the region’s world-class research institutions and amenities in order to create a quality of life ecosystem to attract the next generation of business leaders.

The study will also complement previous and ongoing grant-funded studies conducted by the Department of Economic Development and Planning to spur economic development, including the Bus Rapid Transit Feasibility study, the Nicolls Road Alternatives Analysis and the Nicolls Road BRT Preliminary Engineering, Design and Environmental impact study.

New Undersheriff

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced that he has chosen Steve Kuehhas as Suffolk County’s new Undersheriff.

Kuehhas, who is presently the East End Bureau Chief for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, will assume the position as the second-in-command at the Sheriff’s Office in July. He will provide direct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel,

under the overall supervision of the Sheriff, and oversee the Office’s Internal Affairs Bureau, Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

“Steve is an Attorney with nearly 30 years of experience in law enforcement, complex investigations and supervision. He is wellrespected throughout the County and works well with other law enforcement agencies. He has also worked closely on investigations with the Sheriff’s Office for many years. These are the qualities that I sought when I began the vetting process for a new Undersheriff, and I am certain that he will do an exceptional job for the Sheriff’s Office and the County’s residents,” stated DeMarco.

As the East End Bureau

Chief since 2005, Kuehhas has been responsible for overseeing all criminal prosecutions for Suffolk’s five East End towns. He is also a well-known lecturer on policing and legal issues, and has conducted Continuing Legal Education for District Attorney staff.

In addition to his work with the DA’s Office, he is an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at Suffolk Community College, and was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching in 2015.

“Vincent DeMarco has made instilling a culture of integrity, professionalism and agency-wide accountability the hallmark of his tenure as Sheriff.

These are values that I share, and I look forward to this new chapter in my career,” said Kuehhas.

Photo Contest Winners Announced Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently unveiled the winners of the annual Gurwin Photo Contest, which are now on permanent display at the 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation facility.

The striking photos are a signature element of the warm and welcoming environment at Gurwin.

According to Herbert H. Friedman, Gurwin Center Executive Vice President/ CEO, the contest began more than 23 years ago with

two objectives: to decorate the new facility, and to give local photographers an opportunity to show off their work.

“Our contest has a loyal following, and most of the photographers understand that their photo does more than win them a prize,” he said. “When a photo is chosen, it is not only well-done technically and pleasing in subject matter, but also it is selected with our residents in mind.

Knowing that it will bring joy to others for years

to come is often cited by photog¬raphers as the main reason they enter our contest, regardless of the actual prize won.”

This year, more than 850 entries were received in 12 categories. In all, 44 photos were selected to adorn the walls of the Helen and Nat Tiffen Gallery in the main cor¬ridor at Gurwin. The Tiffen Company, whose founder Nat was a Gurwin Center resident, has sponsored the contest for 10 years. “Tiffen Company’s generosity enables us

to continue to provide beautiful, changing artwork for our residents to enjoy,” Friedman said.
