about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface

Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer

A Day of Independence
July 4th has historically been a day of extreme patriotism. This pride in our nation is brought about by the realization that we are actually free. We live in such a great place that emphasizes our ability to choose! The right to make ourselves happy is undoubtably taken for granted, but on the Fourth of July, we display our thanks. This year, on the fourth, my cousins and I realized OUR freedom. On this Independence Day, we did what made us happy, not our parents. We were truly free. We were able to break away from the monotonous family functions and enjoy the sand, the sea and the sun. Our small group traded in the traditional family barbecue for a “doublecheeseburger pizza”, in
what we consider to be a budding tradition. The seven of us got ice cream afterwards as well. The day wouldn’t have been complete without every single one of us getting ridiculously sunburnt and buying all of the aloe on Fire Island. 237 years ago, our founding fathers wanted to create a place where people could do what they wanted in an effort to make themselves happy. All of America’s troops and fallen heroes gave their lives for the hope that we could forever have our rights. They wanted to enable people to create an environment where people could enjoy their freedom. We did just that! A day filled with beach volleyball and family gave way to a night of fireworks and fun. We enjoyed the company of
each other, and didn’t go to sleep until the morning of July 5th! After months of structured schooling, the slack to do whatever we wanted was welcomed and greatly appreciated. On the fourth, we weren’t forced to study or to work; we were free to do whatever we desired. On that day, we were able to enjoy life to its fullest. We were able to relax, take in the sun and enjoy the company of family. None of these opportunities would have been possible without the sacrifice of our soldiers and the flying of our colors. Enjoy your country, it is the greatest in the world because of the freedom available to us. Isn’t that what the Fourth of July is all about?

My husband loves grapefruit at breakfast, so my son planted some grapefruit seeds to grow his Dad his own grapefruit tree, but nature played a trick.

The sun shone brightly down, the rains brought nourishment, and a seedling popped up. We watched with gladness, measuring the sapling as it grew, dreaming of big juicy grapefruit.

It grew and grew and grew... into a mulberry tree. We were all surprised, and amazed, at the multitude of animals that arrived. Cardinals nest in the tree and flit around the yard. A possum quietly feasts on the berries, hidden by the darkness of night. Doves, robins and whippoorwills glory in its fruit and dazzle us with song. Squirrels playfully romp through the branches, showering berries to the ground.
“Pink Flower Paradise” Photo by: John Manzolilla, Hicksville
Nature played a trick so that my son, who cares for animals so deeply and watches over nature so intently, could bring so much of both to our yard. Nature played a trick, and the fruit our tree bears is not solely for our enjoyment. Perhaps I’ll have to learn to make mulberry syrup and mulberry jam, or maybe the trick is just to munch them right off the tree like the many visitors to our yard. Perhaps that was nature’s trick all along.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Rain By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty? Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no. I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the
so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no? No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days? Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”
Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no? I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. There are far too many, more important things to worry about. A storm cloud hovering overhead is the least of them. Besides, after the storm, you just may see a rainbow.

This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription

The United States Power Squadrons District 3 will hold Rendezvous East, their premier summer event in Greenport July 26th through 28th. The last five rendezvous in Greenport were so successful; the squadrons are back again. With Greenport’s long maritime heritage dating back to the 1600’s, what a great place for a gathering of Long Island boaters. While each local squadron schedules their own events, Rendezvous East brings together boaters from all District 3 squadrons across Long Island for the summer’s biggest boating celebration. District Commander Barry Rush, SN will welcome boats to Mitchell Marina and possibly into several other local marinas. Many other squadron
members will be arriving by land. Festivities begin with a Commander’s cocktail party on Friday evening. They continue on Saturday with breakfast, a flag raising ceremony at 11 a.m., a pot luck lunch and then, a night time dance under the big top attended by approximately 360 party goers including some local dignitaries. Established in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons, “America’s Boating Club,” is the world’s largest non-profit boating organization dedicated to community service, boater education, and boating safety, but that doesn’t mean squadron members can’t have some fun too at events like Rendezvous East. Ciminera, Manager of the Roslyn Savings Bank, Robert Ogrudek, Ogrudek Studios and Christine Vignola, Manager, Fidelity Investments, Roslyn Branch. After the meeting, Captain Mike Caldwell of the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville gave a presentation about the museum, its sailing program and the prized 1888 New York Oyster Sloop Priscilla. He entertained and educated the group on the background of Long Island’s nautical history and interesting facts about the oyster industry. He talked in depth about the historical preservation of Priscilla and how people today can enjoy sailing on it. At the end of the lecture, our members shared their expertise as a historical society and gave recommendations to Captain Mike on how to spread the word and grow as a historical treasure of Long Island. As preservationists of Roslyn, the audience was
very appreciative of the detailed restoration of the ca. 1880’s Priscilla. The sloop, of a design distinctive to the shallow depth of Long Island’s Great South Bay. Though over sixty feet long, she did not have a fixed keel, but was sea worthy and stable because of its broad beam (width) and used a centerboard, which could be raised and lowered (a thousand pounds by block and tackle) as needed. After serving continuously, dredging for oysters until the early 1960’s, she was converted to a cruising schooner until being acquired by the long Island Maritime Museum. Not only was she meticulously restored, mostly by highly skilled volunteers, but today earns her keep through the museum’s sailing program. We recommend a visit to the Long Island Maritime Museum and take the sail on the Priscilla. Details are available on www. limaritime.org.

Summer Concert Series A summer tradition returns to Smithtown on July 11th as music will fill the air and patrons will fill Main Street stores and restaurants to shop and dine before they enjoy the highly popular free family summer concerts at the Library. The annual concert series was renamed the Dennis Cannnataro Family Concert Series in honor of Suffolk County Legislator Lynne Nowick’s brother, who passed away in 2011. Dennis was the creator of the concert series nine years ago and in partnering with Dave Berner of the Smithtown Library District, he was able to bring his idea to fruition. “It is my privilege to once again obtain county funds to support the Friends of the Smithtown Library in providing family
entertainment to the residents of Smithtown and the neighboring communities,” said Legislator Nowick. “Last year more than 22,000 people attended the free concerts,” she added. The concerts will be held on Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. during July and August on the front lawn of the Smithtown Library on Middle Country Road. In case of inclement weather, please check the library’s website at www. smithlib.org after 3 p.m. on the day of the show or call the Smithtown Library at 631.265.2072 and press selection #1 for Smithtown and press selection #6 for Special Announcements. The concert schedule is as follows: • July 11th - Rod Stewart Tribute Band – Rick Larrimore • July 18 - Billy Joel
Tribute Band – Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot • July 25th - Dr. K’s Motown Revue • August 1st - Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band – Jimmy Kenny • August 8th - Eagles Tribute Band – Desert Highway • August 15th - Risky Business – Oldies • August 22nd - Rolling Stones – Streetfighter • August 29th Rain Date Suffolk County Legislator Nowick extends an invitation to the residents of Smithtown and Suffolk County to attend these free live concerts and to bring their own chair or blanket. “This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy some great music and all that downtown Smithtown has to offer,” said Legislator Nowick.

Helping Your Pets Take A Bite Out Of Poor Health (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan
Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,”
Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows. To learn more about commonly accepted pet oral health myths and how to keep your pets’ mouths healthy, visit www. Facebook.com/greenies.

The ‘World
Class’ crew is rounded out with Robert Cashman – Technical Director, Debbie Palen – Assistant Director and Bernard Caprera – Lighting Director. The eight scenes that will be performed run the full gamut from comedy, drama and dramedy - with something for everyone. (NAPSI)—Pet owners have become increasingly aware of the importance of pet oral health and its effect on whole-body health and well-being. While daily tooth-brushing is the gold standard in oral care for pets as it is for humans, less than 1 percent of dog owners are compliant. Instead, many turn to treats with dental benefits, known for being more enjoyable for pets and most convenient for owners. A new study shows that 77 percent of dog owners gave treats they believed to provide oral care benefits last year, with 30 percent increasing such treat giving. Yet up to 60 percent of them don’t realize that their dogs may have progressing oral disease. Part of the problem is lack of veterinary care. Also, most treats that claim to clean teeth lack the research to prove it. “Veterinary dentists only trust a fraction of treats to be effective at cleaning teeth and safely protecting
them,” says Dr. Jan Bellows, veterinary dentist, diplomate and incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. According to Dr. Bellows, it’s important for pet owners to understand which dental treats work effectively to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup and are safe for pet teeth. “Some dental treats, especially real bones, are notorious for their low nutritional value and their hard textures, which can contribute to tooth fractures,” Dr. Bellows says. Many consumers are accustomed to seeking out toothbrushes and toothpaste that carry the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. And dental standards are equally as important for pets and their oral health. Fortunately, there’s a governing body that confirms if dental treats work, using third-party testing. The Veterinary
Oral Health Council (VOHC) is similar in nature to the ADA but is applied to pet products. Through stringent research and review, the VOHC determines which products on the market are effective. Greenies® Canine Dental Chews was the first brand of dental treats to receive the seal for plaque and tartar control and has been a pioneer in dental treats that meet VOHC standards. “Walk into any pet store and you will find dozens of treats that claim to clean teeth,” Dr. Bellows says. “While it’s easy to make teeth-cleaning claims, formulating a treat that significantly protects teeth is difficult. The VOHC seal is there to help veterinarians and pet owners recognize which products are proven to work.” For more information about the Veterinary Oral Health Council, visit www. vohc.org. Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo. Shortcut: “I’m only
driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another
person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly. Help For Parents Fortunately, AAA experts are available to help parents with car seat installation. Visit an AAA club, go to www. seatcheck.org or call (866) SEATCHECK [(866) 7328243]. Outreach Grads
A group of 25 residents at Island Nursing and Rehab Center, age 52100, recently graduated from Suffolk County Community College’s Faculty Association Community Outreach Program. This was the fourth year in a row that the program has taken place, this year featuring speakers including former Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher and Daniel Linker, Assistant Professor of English, Suffolk County Community College Program Chair and Coordinator of the Faculty Association Professors on Wheels Program. Through the “Professors on Wheels” program, Suffolk County Community College professors donated their time to come to the nursing home to speak to the residents on a variety of educational topics. The graduation ceremony was
held for residents who attended the complete series of classes over the course of the year. Residents were adorned in caps and gowns, receiving their graduation certificate with family members, fellow residents and college professors in attendance. Dowling College donated the 2013 tassels as a keepsake for the residents. Additional speakers included David Fridkin, Administrator/CEO of Island Nursing and Rehab Center along with the facility’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation, Lorrie Prescott, who coordinated the program at Island Nursing. Mr. Fridkin stated, “This program is so wonderful because our residents never want to stop learning. They very much appreciated the content of the lectures and are grateful that they are recognized as intelligent adults who still have a
quest for knowledge.” This year’s educational topics in the series included Alfred Hitchcock, Master of Suspense; Mathematical Analysis of Civil War Patchwork; Introductions in Spanish; The Donkey, the Rose and the Nightingale, What are They Doing in Persian Poetry?; Sleeping and Dreaming; Chinese Language and Culture; Tribute to Music of the ‘30’s and ‘40’s; My Culture, On Being Italian/Irish/Polish/ German; and, Starting a Fitness Program. Island Nursing and Rehab Center, located at 5537 Expressway Drive North in Holtsville, NY, is proud to be a leader in long term care, short term rehabilitation, subacute care, hospice and respite care. Gas-Saving Tips (NAPSI)—Conserving gasoline saves motorists money and lessens America’s dependence on foreign oil. These gas-saving tips are from the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians. • Keep tires properly inflated and wheels in alignment. • Clean out clutter and
unnecessary items to lessen the burden on the engine. • Consolidate trips and errands; try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stopand-go conditions. • Go easy on sudden, hard accelerations; don’t speed; anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually. • Keep the engine running at its peak by replacing filters and fluids as recommended in the owner’s manual and having
engine performance problems such as rough idling corrected. • Use windows and airconditioning wisely. At highway speeds, it’s better to keep windows up (and air-conditioning on, if wanted) to reduce air drag. But turn off the A/C in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel. Visit www.ase.com for car care tips, advice on finding an auto technician and more.
Creative Collaboration
A new collaboration will take place this summer between Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the new Youth Summer Programs of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Students from Usdan’s Senior Division Creative Writing Major will travel to BAM on July 23rd and 26th to work with students in BAM’s Style and Substance creative writing workshop. Led by Usdan teacher David Surface, and BAM teacher Richard Hoehler, students will together create a narrative project that will become a play or series of interwoven monologues and dialogues. Students will work to create the theme of the piece, and will then write a script for a new piece of collaborative theater. The culminating event will take place in BAM’s new Fisher Building on Friday, July 26th, and will feature professional actors bringing the new theater work to life. Andrew Copper, Associate Director of Usdan Center and Usdan’s coordinator of the project, says “Usdan Center is thrilled to partner with BAM for the first time. We are excited to see students from both organizations work together to create an exciting, vibrant and unique piece of art.” BAM’s one-week Style and Substance program, for ages 12 to 14, from July 22nd-26th, aims to build style, tone and voice and improve critical thinking through responses to fellow students’ work. Its Fisher Center, which opened last September, was designed as a dynamic, flexible space for new programs, Brooklyn artists and the community, with an expanded roster of talks, education and family programs. The Youth Summer Programs offer a variety of one and two-week workshops in Creative Play, Video Game Design and Creating Musical Theater.
Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, now entering its 46th year, has introduced the visual and performing arts to more than 60,000 children ages 6 to 18 at its 200-acre woodland campus in the Huntington area of Long Island. In its Creative Writing program, started many years ago, small groups of creative writing students engage the forms of poetry, short fiction and playwriting in covered, open-air studios. The program culminates in the publication of Usdan’s literary magazine, Painting with Words, a multidisciplinary publication which includes student-produced poetry and writing. Besides the regular faculty, guest teachers including Broadway playwright Michele Lowe, have taught Master Classes. David Surface, Founder of the WriteMind Workshop, has had stories and essays published in Doubletake, North American Review, and Crazyhorse. He is a recipient of a non-fiction literature fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and is Writerin-residence at Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts. Richard Hoehler is an actor, director, writer, and teaching artist. He received the OOBR Award for Best Solo Performance, and his work has been optioned by Columbia TriStar Television, performed at regional theaters around the country, featured at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and published by Smith & Kraus. His fiction and award-winning short stories have been published by various publications and presses. Hoehler has taught acting and writing classes in New York City schools for over twenty years, and is the workshop director for Random House, Inc.’s Creative Writing Competition. The Brooklyn Academy of Music, a multi-arts center in downtown Brooklyn
has, for more than 150 years, presented worldrenowned programming in music, dance and theater, opera, film and much more, showcasing the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts’ alumni include actors Natalie Portman and Olivia Thirlby, singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey, and members of major music and dance ensembles. Usdan’s program features more than 40 three, four and seven-week programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, writing, nature & ecology, and chess. No audition is needed for most programs. Each summer, 1,500 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day. One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Usdan Center is an agency of the UJAFederation of New York.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over
your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. TraceMyID customers are covered with up to $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance and get personal fraud support in reclaiming their identities should they become victims of ID theft. More information can be found at www.tracemyID. com.

Don’t Text And Drive (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction.
If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www. distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps
1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. Learn more from the experts in mobile technology at LG by visiting the company’s LG Text Ed website, www. lgtexted.com. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. In order to keep distractions to a minimum, LG encourages all drivers to never text while driving and to always use a handsfree Bluetooth device when operating a vehicle.

(NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly.
