Commack High School Students Recognized

The Commack School District is pleased to announce that the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) has recognized four Commack High School students in the 2022 awards for Aspirations in Computing (AiC). Zeynep Tasoglu was named an affiliate winner, Lakxshanna Raveendran was given a national

honorable mention award, and Brynn Amatulli and Mackenzie Rossiter were given affiliate honorable mention awards. They are among the 400 award recipients from over 3,500 applicants nationwide, putting them in the top 11 percent of applicants. Each year, NCWIT recognizes students in grades 9 to 12 who identify as women, genderqueer, or non-binary for their

“aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for postsecondary education.” National winners are recognized and celebrated at the National Award Ceremony hosted by Bank of America next month.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is collaborating with St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park, to host a blood drive on Tuesday, June 28, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm. It is at Travis Hall – Lower Level, behind St. Joseph’s at 59 Church Street. The drive is to benefit the blood banks maintained by Long Island Blood Services, which provides blood to hospitals throughout Long Island. To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be

between the ages of 16 (16 with parental consent) and 76, (if older than 76, you need permission from your doctor), weigh over 110 pounds and not have had a tattoo in the last three months. Please bring a valid photo ID with you. LI Blood Services recommends that you eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Previous donors should bring their blood donor card with them. Each donor has an opportunity to win six tickets to a Mets game, and

to receive a Mets t-shirt as a thank you for donating to the blood drive. “Hospitals are always in need of blood supplies so it is important that if you can donate blood to do so because one pint of blood can help save three lives. During the past two years with COVID-19 there has been an increase need for blood,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. For more information, please call Legislator Trotta’s district office at 631-8543900.

Smithtown Community Unites With Local Officials To Unveil Major Restoration Effort Of The Smithtown Performing Arts Center On Wednesday, June 8th, Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, together with his administration (Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo, Councilman Tom Lohmann, Town Clerk Vincent Puleo, and Tax Receiver Deanna Varricchio) and Legislator Rob Trotta, joined by Smithtown Center for Performing Arts President Mike Mucciolo and his board members, Smithtown Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Barbara Franco, and various Smithtown Business Owners to unveil details of the upcoming restoration of the Smithtown Performing Arts Center. “I can not express just how vital the Theatre is to the business district’s successful revitalization transformation. I have the utmost faith in the Smithtown Performing Arts Council and I look forward to our continued partnership in restoring the anchor of Main Street in Smithtown.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The Smithtown Performing Arts Council, a nonprofit organization who has successfully taken ownership of the theatre property, unveiled plans to restore and renovate the outside and interior of the building. A short promotional public service announcement aired during the press conference, along with an architectural rendering and a breakdown

of the capital program. The Main Street Theater has been a driving economic force for the community since its inception as a single screen theater in 1932. The Smithtown Performing Arts Center was listed for sale in mid August of 2021, creating an urgent plea for

community-wide support to save the theater. Without the anchor to the Smithtown Business District, the fate of the local economy would be uncertain. In late May, the Smithtown Performing Arts Council successfully closed on the purchase of the historic theater, with big

plans to “Bring the Light Back to Main Street.” The Smithtown Performing Arts Center is located at 2 E. Main Street in Smithtown. To Donate to Save the Smithtown Theater, Visit: https://gofund.me/93a0c9fe.

The Charity of the Month for June is

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York www.littleflowerny.org

Each person they serve is assisted in maximizing their potential for selfcare, social, emotional and physical development. The organization’s dedicated team of administrators, direct support professionals and clinicians work together to provide a continuum of care. Services are provided in residences across Queens and Long Island that feel like home. The majority of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities served by Little Flower participate in their Family Care program. Family Care providers provide an extended, supportive family to individuals who cannot live independently in the community by welcoming them into their homes and families. They support them as they become productive and active members of their community. All Family Care providers are certified by New York State and are supervised and monitored by Little Flower. Family Care providers are a dedicated group that does so much day in and day out by providing personal, social, emotional and physical care. They help these extraordinary individuals live full lives, whether by assisting with scheduling and attending doctor’s appointments, supporting them in seeking employment or helping them gain new experiences on family vacations or community activities.

On any given day, direct support professionals help empower IRA residents by supporting them as they overcome challenges to reach their best potential. While supporting their basic health and well-being, they assist the residents with rehabilitation, guide them in recreational and group activities such as fishing trips or vacations, and support them in their day-to-day goals and as active members of their community. Little Flower continues to discover extraordinary abilities within their residents, and while those individuals may face a more challenging future than most, the organization is confident that they can still enjoy a full and active life. They truly feel that what they need most is encouragement, understanding and the willingness of others to help them maximize their opportunities for becoming part of the community. You can join Little Flower as a partner to help these remarkable individuals live full and happy lives as a family care provider or direct support professional.
