Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. Because the hotline volunteers have had breast cancer, it helps them to understand what it is like

to receive a breast cancer diagnosis and the needed treatment that will follow. “When our volunteers answer a hotline call the caller knows that the person they are speaking to has walked in their shoes and understands what they are going through,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the coordinator of volunteers. Ms. Rubenstein saysit is also reassuring for the caller to know that not only has the volunteer survived her diagnosis and treatment, she is now doing so well that she is volunteering to help others. Volunteers are required to take in-depth training, which includes breast education, development of important skills, such as active listening, community outreach and knowledge of community resources. The volunteers

also have continuing education throughout the year. The next volunteer training is scheduled for three consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th, 18th and 25th. Congressman Pete King recently honored all the brave men and women of the American military, past and present, who have answered their nation's call to secure our life and liberty during a Great Armed Forces Day event in Hauppauge. The event was hosted by

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and attended by veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars belonging to veterans organizations including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War,

the Vietnam Veterans of America. The Congressman noted that "The event demonstrated the obligation and commitment we have and must always have to these brave men and women."

PCLI Awards Presented with PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists. She is a former PCLI president. The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than 60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul of Nassau County’s tax assessment system. This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy. The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was

selected as best magazine. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was recognized as this year’s best college newspaper, and The Red & Black, the student online paper at PatchogueMedford High School, is the winner of best high school media outlet. Zach Gottehrer-Cohen, a journalist with Long Island Herald Newspapers, is this year’s James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. This year’s PCLI outstanding college Journalist is Erika Peters from Suffolk County Community College, while the Hank Logeman/ News 12 High School Journalism Scholarship recipient is Zoe Malin of North Shore High School. Joe Catalano was presented with the Phil Spahn Memorial Award for his volunteer work with the club, especially his dedication in directing the club’s annual holiday show for many years.

The Press Club of Long Island hosted its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th. The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award were honored at the dinner. The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees were Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Cancer Survivor Day Amid the music and their memories, more than 1,400 cancer survivors, their families and other loved ones gathered Saturday to celebrate the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s 12th annual Don Monti Cancer Survivors’ Day, held outside the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success, NY. The day of celebration, made possible through the generosity of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, included patients from 12 Northwell hospitals that collectively treat more than 16,000 new cancer patients every year – North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, LIJ Forest Hills, LIJ Valley Stream, and Huntington, Plainview

The Power of the Marketing Mix area last night, with many trees fallen and major roads blocked? Not exactly a profitable situation. Translating These Principles to Your Everyday Life Customer: Never forget that you are the customer, and if not treated with the respect that you deserve, you should stop dealing with them. Start buying with a firm that greatly appreciates your business. Product: In this case, you are the product. If you are in the job market, don’t forget that (as in business) you are competing with other prospects. So, what factors make you stand out from all the rest? Even in purely social situations, do you make friends easily and keep them for a long time? (I call that a friendship index.) Price: Back to the job market: What are your salary requirements in relation to the position being offered? Are you sure that it’s realistic? If not, can you accept a lesser amount? In effect, what are you really worth? Promotion: How are you promoting yourself? Are you making the best appearance possible with neatly pressed and presentable clothing? What about your resume - has it been prepared by a professional writer? Place: Is the position being offered in reasonable proximity to your house or

apartment? If not, do you have alternate ways to get there? Uncontrollable Variables: Think hard on this one. To the best of your knowledge, is there anything in your world that could get in the way of your planned progress? If so, is there any way around this potential obstacle? Summary: You have learned about the Marketing Mix, the tool that most companies use to actively compete in the market. We have translated those principles into your world and outlined how you might use these to get ahead in the world of business and your personal life. To gain the most of this exercise, think carefully about each principle and how it applies to you. Before you draw any conclusions, make certain that you are being 100% honest with your answers (even subconsciously). Going forward, you’ll be glad that you did. What if I shared the secrets of success utilized by all of the Fortune 500 companies and the majority of small businesses, then showed you how to translate these principles into your daily life? Are you interested? If so, move forward and read on... Regardless of company size, companies make use of the Marketing Mix. This consists of the four marketing activities - product, price, promotion and distribution - that the firm can control to achieve assigned goals within a marketing environment. To fully understand this, please draw three circles on a piece of paper. In the first inner circle, write the word “Customer.” Outside the circle, draw a larger one and, in four equal parts, write the words “Product,” “Price,” “Promotion” and “Place” (also known as Place Utility.) Lastly, draw a third circle outside of the one with four equal parts and label this one “Uncontrollable Variables.” Following is an explanation of each one: Customer: The customer is at the center (or heart) of the circle, since companies must understand that the customer is at the center of all activities carried out by them. Once a company forgets that, they will eventually go out of business. Product: (Note: all of the four P’s are called “controllable variables” since every company

Cancer Survivor Day Continued From 7 of NBC-TV’s Today Show, for “pulling me out of my cancer closet” and giving him the courage to speak openly about his diagnosis. He continues to promote awareness through his work as a board member of

the Colon Cancer Alliance and has given generously of his time to raise money for colorectal research. Clearly emotional, Mr. Valvo looked out at the hundreds of cheering people in his audience and told them, “The one thing that cancer taught me to

do is to celebrate every day. Life is joyous…we all need to remember this.” Another cancer survivor, pediatrician Anila Thomas, MD, was in her last year of medical school at age 25, when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2011.

Dashing to Defeat Disease Bringing awareness to neurofibromatosis, often abbreviated as NF, students at Islip’s Wing Elementary School learned about the disease during the month of May and collected coins to help fund Children’s Tumor Foundation conduct research to find

a cure. At library time, the students read a book about an Islip student with NF and received coloring books with facts about the disease. Each week in May, students shared facts about NF during morning announcements. To culminate NF Awareness

Month, Wing’s students ran a “Hero Dash,” complete with capes and a visit from Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi. “Wing students are everyday heroes,” said teacher Lisa Dieumegard.

Social Harmony Winner Michaela Fitzsimmons, an eighth-grader at East Islip Middle School, recently won third place and a $100 prize in the 2018 Social Harmony Writing Contest. The goal of the contest, which is sponsored by the Suffolk County AsianAmerican Advisory Board,

Wellbrook Foundation and JEI Learning Center Stonybrook, is to inspire students to think of ideas to promote cultural understanding and social harmony. Participants were asked to write an essay on how to improve the race and ethnic relations in society.

Seven members of the Smithtown High School West girls field hockey team have been recognized for their academic excellence. Natalie Condzal, Charlotte Maracina, Emily Montagnino, Julia Negrin, Madison Plourde, Janine Suris and Brooke Vitulli were named to the 2017 Keith Waldman – Optimal Performance Associates/ NFHCA High School National Academic Squad.

In addition, Condzal, Plourde, Suris and Vitulli also earned Scholar of Distinction honors. More than 2,770 studentathletes from 344 high schools have been named to the squad. The program recognizes high school seniors and juniors who have achieved a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 or the equivalent through the first quarter of the 2017-2018 school

year. Seniors and juniors who have achieved a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.9 or the equivalent through the first quarter of the 20172018 school year have been recognized as Scholars of Distinction. More than 850 student-athletes have received the Scholar of Distinction designation in 2017.

Taking the Top Prize Smithtown High School West senior Sarah Adamo competed in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from May 12th-18th. ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science competition. Each year, it brings together approximately 1,800 of the world’s most accomplished high school students from more than

80 countries to showcase their independent science research. Students present their work to scientists and engineers who judge them on their creative ability and scientific thought, as well as the thoroughness, skill and clarity shown in their project. Adamo was awarded first place in her category for her work on “Acetylcholine and nicotine potentiate currents in cells isolated

The Eldercare Locator, a public service of the Administration on Aging, an agency of the U.S. Administration for Community Living is a nationwide service that connects older adults and their caregivers with

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta welcomed kindergarten student Gianna Kelly and her family, as well as Park View Elementary Principal Kevin Storch to the June meeting of the Legislature to congratulate her on taking first place in the kindergarten division in the annual Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary School Science Fair. Legislator Trotta pointed out that his is the first time

that Park View Elementary School has won first place in this contest. Gianna Kelly’s project involved placing light and dark colored crayons in water to learn which colors would float or sink. In testing them, she discovered that it was not the color of the crayon, but how it was placed in the water. If the crayon was positioned horizontally on the water, it floated, but if it was placed with the pointed or flat end in the

water, it sank. “I commend all of these students and their teachers for an excellent job in competing in this annual contest as there were 470 projects submitted by 110 Suffolk County schools,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta. “I am very proud that since I have been a legislator that we have had winners from my district each year,” added Legislator Trotta.

Bus Driver Training Ensuring student safety is a top priority, not only in school but also while students travel to and from school. Suffolk Transportation Service (STS) was among a select group of pupil transportation operators in the U.S. chosen by the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a training program that encourages coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations, such as a terrorism incident. Multiple Suffolk County school districts recently joined with local emergency responders, including Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, Bay Shore Fire Department, and New York State Bus Contractor’s Association, at STS’s Saxon Avenue Training Facility to

participate in a unique TSA table top training exercise called EXIS (Exercise Information System). The TSA is an agency of the Federal Department of Homeland Security. “Our top priority as a school bus operator is student safety. Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. is pleased to be selected to spearhead this training program in Suffolk County, which helped all participants enhance their coordination with other agencies to keep students safe,” said John Corrado, President of STS, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. Participating school districts were: Port Jefferson, Bay Shore, Longwood, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Three Village, Central Islip, West Islip, Islip, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Comsewogue, and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. School

EXIS is a TSA training model used to foster collaboration and communication among both private and public transportation agencies to prevent, plan, protect and respond to violent acts on busses, railroads, and other methods of surface transportation. During the recent day-long training event, the agencies practiced a number of simulated emergency response scenarios. These included a potentially dangerous device found on a bus and a bus involved in an explosion. At the conclusion of training, the TSA experts reviewed the results of the drills with participants to assess their effectiveness.

Seniors Thank Veterans A group of senior citizens from the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department recently spent the afternoon at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University. According to Laura Greif, Program Director,

“We have a group of very talented women who spend countless hours making quilts and lap blankets specifically for our nations’ veterans. They are a very patriotic group who want to say thank you in a personal way.” The group distributed

fifty quilts and blankets to residents, all of whom had the opportunity to pick out one in their favorite color. Jacqueline Bodkin, Assistant Director of Therapeutic Recreation, hosted the event and was very grateful for the donation.

Four Eagles Honored Suffolk County Legislators Robert Trotta and elected officials from the Town of Smithtown and New York State attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Kevin Caunter, Matt Garcett, Chris Golden and Matty Kalinsky of Boy Scout Troop 888 of Smithtown. The four scouts wanted to do their Eagle Scout Community Service Projects for several Smithtownbased organizations and the Hauppauge Fire Department. Kevin Caunter built a brick raised flower bed around the Hauppauge Fire

Department’s sign, flag pole, and digital clock. He also refurbished the company’s sign. Matt Garcett replaced the 200foot split rail fence at Hoyt Farm in Commack, which will protect the animals and enhance the grounds of the park. Chris Golden worked with the Suffolk County Parks Department to create the Rassapeague County Park on county-owned property in Nissequogue. He built a parking lot, created a marked trail and cleaned up more than 1,000 pounds of debris from the site. Matty Kalinsky designed and constructed

an agility ramp, platform, and a suspended bridge to train the puppies at the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown. Once the dogs are ready, they become guide dogs for the blind and/or wounded veterans. Suffolk County Legislator Trotta said, “This is a very proud moment for these young men and their families, as well as their troop leaders and fellow scouts. I extend my congratulations to all of them for being outstanding scouts and role models for the younger scouts and hope that they will remain active in their communities.”

Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

AN INSIDE LOOK - On June 5th and 6th, third-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District enjoyed in a hands-on science lesson thanks to Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The students participated in a two-hour program to learn about the lifecycle of insects. They examined local pond water and the various insects that live in it.
