In Kings Park One Donation Can Save Three Lives

in conjunction with St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park is hosting a blood drive on Tuesday, June 27, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm. It is at Travis Hall – Lower Level, behind St. Joseph’s at 59 Church Street. The drive is to benefit the blood banks maintained by Long Island Blood Services, which provides blood to hospitals throughout Long Island.

To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be between the ages of 16 (16 with parental consent) and 76, (if older than 76, you need written permission from your doctor), weigh over 110 pounds and not have had a tattoo in the last three months. Please bring a valid photo ID with you. LI Blood Services recommends that you eat

and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Previous donors should bring their blood donor card with them.

As a thank you for donating a pint of blood, each donor will receive a free Mets T-shirt. In addition, all donors will have a chance to win a pair of Mets tickets.

“Hospitals are always in need of blood supplies so it is important that if you can donate blood to do so because one pint of blood can help save three lives. We do a blood drive every year so I thank those who have attended in the past and hope you will consider donating again,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and associated hardware. One of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying

defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota. “Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

Their best known client was former President George H.W. Bush, who was matched with his service dog, Sully H.W. Bush, who is now a facility dog at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The department’s medevac helicopter, which is registered as a “flying air ambulance,” made a prearranged landing at High School East to teach biomedical science students from both district high schools.

The officers explained that they most often respond to medical emergencies involving trauma, such as a car accident. A heart monitor, stretcher, blood pressure medication and more are all on board.

The helicopter is equipped with an infrared camera that can locate people because they emit body heat. The second pilot in the cockpit also can

monitor a color camera that can zoom up to 18 times.

The crew also responds to missing person’s calls, particularly involving elderly Alzheimer’s patients, as well as water rescues.

The visit continues a close partnership between the Smithtown Central School District and the Suffolk County Police Department.

Richard Savicki, fourth grade teacher at St. James Elementary School, is a life saver—literally.

Savicki recently helped save 65-year-old Michael Gibson’s life at a track

event in Port Jefferson. Gibson suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed. That’s when Richard helped perform life-saving CPR.

Gibson was without a heartbeat for 10 minutes

but Mr. Savicki’s actions kept him alive in time before Suffolk County Police and Terryville Fire Department paramedics arrived. An automated chest compressor was

applied, and an AED was used. Mr. Gibson woke up in the ambulance, was taken to Mather Hospital where the staff in the new cardiac catheterization lab discovered severe coronary

artery disease.

Gibson was transferred to South Shore University Hospital where he underwent a quadruple bypass.

On June 1, Savicki was

among those honored at a press conference at South Shore hospital, where he reunited with Gibson for the first time since the incident.

The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association - the leading voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health for all, invites Long Island companies, communities and individuals to stop the cycle of stroke by raising critical funds to further research and education through CycleNation.

CycleNation is scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at Push Fitness Club of Melville, 515 Broadhollow Road in Melville. Check-in begins at 3:00pm and the ride starts at 4:00pm.

“It’s a great honor to chair the 2023 Long Island
