Legislator Manuel Esteban Sr. along with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department hosted an Operation Safe Child and Senior Medical Id card event at Commack Public Library. Children were photographed and fingerprinted for submission to the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (Amber Alert). In addition, parents

were issued ID cards to keep for their children. The card contains critical information to aid in a child’s search should they ever go missing. Senior Citizens were able to obtain a card that provides important information regarding their health status and contact person in case of an emergency. “The event was well attended; over 50 children are safer today than they

were yesterday as a result of this safety program. In addition, a handful of senior citizens came out to get their Medical ID cards. I was delighted to collaborate with Sheriff Toulon in bringing these programs to the community. My thanks go to the three dedicated Deputy Sheriffs, the Library staff and everyone who participated in this event,” said Legislator Esteban.

Two winners will be chosen. All entries must be submitted by June 13, 2022. Long Island Media Group • 631.226.2636 • info@longislandmediagroup.com

The Public Is Invited To “Talk To Astronauts As They Orbit The Earth” Council (BSA) wants to bring our local community members together to be a part of something that is different and out of this world (literally). This is being offered to the public for free, in an effort to encourage the 5- to 17-year-old youths in our community to get involved with STEM programs and to let them know the wonderful things

that scouting programs can offer to our children in addition to giving them a well-rounded education and experiences. This will be a fun fill day starting from 9AM. Planned events include Rocket Races, Robotic activities, STEM projects, and dignitary presenters. For the youths already in the Boy Scouting program, the Cinematography Merit

Badge and the Radio Merit Badge classes are being offered, in addition to the chance to talk directly to astronauts orbiting above the Earth. Youths from all over Suffolk County, New York will get the chance to enter a contest to ask astronauts on board the International Space Station a question. Open to any youth (scout or non-scout) in Suffolk

County, the children can enter the contest. Please go to our website to submit your question: www.sccbsa. org/askanstronaut Working with ARISS, NASA, ISS Space Station and local Amateur Radio - The time of the event is subject to change the closer we get to the event. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-profit organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

We Buy All Cars, Pick-up Trucks, Motorcycles, Muscle Cars, Toyota, Honda, Nissan Garage Clean Outs

One of this non-profit’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination. Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions.

Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difficult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.

participants are receiving the necessary care to stay healthy and to stay out of emergency rooms and hospitals. EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. For more information on the Chronic Health Care Coordination program, please call (631) 968-8000.

Simply put, when you don’t have a place to live, then keeping up with your doctor’s appointments isn’t likely to be the number-one priority on your mind.

Options For Community Living’s 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala And Casino Night Honored Dale Cole And Brian Rooney Options for Community Living, Inc. recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a Gala and Casino Night at the Heritage Club in Bethpage. The event acknowledged honorees Dale Cole, Newsday/ Newsday Charities, and Brian Rooney, Mutual of America as well as the retirement of founding board member, Michael McClain. Two-hundred people attended the event, which raised over $75,000 for Options’ programs which help vulnerable Long Islanders live independently in the community. Yolanda Robano-Gross, CEO at Options for Community Living, Inc. introduced the evening by acknowledging the challenges of the last two years and recognizing Options employees for their commitment to the mission. “It has been my privilege, particularly these last two years, to lead and be part of the most caring, compassionate, and strong group of individuals that we call Team Options. Over 200 strong, our team worked tirelessly to ensure the safety, dignity, and care of more than 2,400 men, women, and children across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” remarked Ms. Robano-Gross. Options recognized honoree, Dale Cole, Community Affairs Project Manager for Newsday, and the driving force behind Newsday Charities which provides vital support to local nonprofits. “Dale has impacted countless lives through her work,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross. “Options has been the grateful recipient of support provided through Newsday Charities for many years, and we are thankful for Newsday’s efforts to activate Long Islanders in support of our communities most vulnerable residents.”

More Than $75,000 Raised For Options Programs That Help Some Of Long Island’s Most Vulnerable Residents

Yolanda Robano-Gross With Brian Rooney

Dale In accepting her award, Dale Cole said, “We know first-hand of Options’ never-ending dedication to helping people find stability in their lives and providing them with the tools they need to move forward. Thank you to Options for this honor, but the real honor goes to the staff of Options in recognition of the tremendous support they’ve given to the Long Island community for 40 years. I applaud you all.” Options also recognized the contributions of honoree Brian Rooney, Senior Vice President, Mutual of America, and active supporter of area nonprofit organizations. “While Brian lends his support to multiple organizations, he is special to us,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross. “He recognizes the needs of nonprofit organizations and acts – by volunteering and through financial support. He believes in giving back

Cole whenever possible. I feel privileged to have him in our corner.” In his acceptance speech, Brian Rooney credited his parents with “teaching him the right thing to do,” and acknowledged the staff at Options for Community Living, for their compassion and kindness. Addressing the audience Brian said, “This is why I am so proud to support Options and the amazing work accomplished by their employees.” The Gala also celebrated retiring founding board member Michael McClain who encouraged everyone to “remain vigilant” as advocates for those in need of assistance, and a moving testimonial was provided by Options’ employee Michele M. Michele is a resident in Options’ supportive housing and works as a peer specialist helping support others in their recovery from mental illness. Sharing her life

Michael McClain with Judy Simoncic experience, Michele said, “Options has played a pivotal role in both my personal and professional life. I continue to receive the support I need from Options staff and in turn, I can provide support and encouragement to others facing their own struggles. Back in 2017, I had no hope, no vision, no sense of selfworth. But with my family, my treatment team, and Options, I have been able to not only survive, but thrive.

And isn’t that what life is all about?” About Options for Community Living, Inc. Established in 1982, Options for Community Living, Inc. operates residential programs for adults recovering from mental illness, care coordination services for adults and children with chronic health conditions, and housing and services for homeless people with disabilities and/or HIV/

Local Cub Scouts Presented With Catholic Cub Scout Emblems

The Matinecock District scouts and their volunteer scouting leaders participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent Week”, in recognition of the Boy Scouts of America and the 12th point of the Scout Law, usually during the first week in February. The youths attended and took part in leading services at all of the houses of worship both in the host Churches and Temples as well as at their local places of worship (some of which are the Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Explorer Post’s sponsoring organization). The scouts were able to join together and be recognized this year during the Celebration of the Mass held at St. Anthony of Padua in East Northport. At Scout Sunday the participating Scouts were from Cub Scout Pack 5(East Northport), Pack 238 (East Northport), Pack 312 (East Northport), and 471 (Elwood) and from Boy Scout Troop 5 (East Northport), Troop 8 (East Northport), Troop 52 (East Northport), and Troop

410 (Northport). Brendan Murray, an Eagle Scout from Troop 410 served as the Mass lector. There were 17 Catholic Religious Emblems awarded to the Cub Scouts and also recognized were two Scouts who earned their Presbyterian Religious Emblems. Cub Scouts from local Cub Scout Packs with the assistance of their parents, leaders and Chaplain recently completed the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei Catholic Scout Religious Emblems programs. These courses consist of activities and Bible studies designed to help the Scout become more aware of God’s presence in his daily life, especially within the home and community. By completing the requirements, the Scout has strengthened their spiritual growth and religious knowledge. Presentations of the Catholic Cub Scout Religious Emblems were made during the Celebration of the Mass at St. Anthony of Padua in East Northport. The Boy

Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Scouting has brought families and communities together for more than 100 years to prepare America’s youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. Scouting is as vital and relevant today as it was when our journey began. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week.” During the presentation of the Cub Scout Religious Emblems the explanation of the medals was given and each of the Cub Scout’s names for the Light of Christ recipients and the names for the Parvuli Dei recipients were read aloud Also recognized at the Scout Sunday service was Eagle Scout Matthew Baldwin of Troop 5 for his service to St. Anthony of Padua Church and Saint Anthony’s High School.

Recently, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Ryan Christopher Brauer from Troop 75 of Kings Park. He achieved this distinguished rank through his consistent commitment and dedication to scouting, as well as the successful completion of his Eagle Scout Leadership Project. For his community project, Ryan designed an outdoor classroom at RJO Intermediate School in Kings Park. He built 12 benches and provided a white board and supplies for 30 students. “It is always an honor for me to be invited and to attend an Eagle Scout Court of Honor. This is a tremendous accomplishment for a young person as it is the highest rank in scouting, and this recognition is something he will have

The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) announced that SUNY Cobleskill first year catcher/designated hitter Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown West High School, has been named the conference’s 2022 NAC Baseball Rookie-of-theYear. The first year receiver becomes the first player in program history to earn NAC Baseball Rookie-ofthe-Year honors after being named to All-NAC Western Division Team during the season earning the league’s Rookie-of-the-Week three times during the year. The catcher/designated hitter enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign wearing Orange & Black batting .355 going 44-of-124 on the year in 37 games compiling a .420

on-base percentage. The Smithtown, N.Y. native tallied 13 doubles and five home runs driving in 32 runs and scoring 29 times while showing good instincts on the bases going 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts.

According to Fighting Tiger Head Coach Lance Ratchford, “Logan had an incredible freshman year and enjoy much success at the plate and behind the plate. He arguably had one of the best freshman years in the country at a position that is one of the toughest to play. His future is bright, and we are excited for what’s in store for him next season.” During the 2022 season Cobleskill posted their third consecutive winning season posting a 21-20 overall record capturing the league’s Western Division Championship for the second consecutive season with an 11-4 conference mark while making their third conference post-season appearance in four years.

Hard work is the answer to that question. Most business owners find it challenging to make every customer happy, especially if they service many customers. It takes hard work and a special staff that is committed to achieving these results. The staff must be able to work well together to make sure all customers are taken care of and all issues are resolved. Most problems originate from issues with communication. Whether the communication is between the customer and staff, or between managers and the workforce, communication is key in resolving issues quickly & effectively. When customers feel they are getting the runaround, or they find it hard to talk to someone who can help them and answer their questions to resolve their problems, it makes the company as a whole look unorganized and unprofessional. When a company is able to bridge a direct line of communication for the customer with managers, staff, and the workforce it allows the customers to get the answers they require. The key to customer satisfaction success is to provide top-quality products at the best price possible while providing quality service and quick communication for customers. Unified Home Remodeling has been doing this for over 30 years! With over 40 employees, many managers, and an active owner, Unified is able to give customers the experience they need from a company to feel comfortable. Unified has set the standard for customer service in the home remodeling industry for years! If you need to upgrade your home, there is only one company to call. For a FREE estimate to upgrade your windows, doors, siding, roofing, or masonry work visit www.UnifiedHomeRemodeling.com or call 888-631-2131 and one of Unified’s Experts will be there to help you.

Commack School District Develops Mock Trial Courtroom

SUFFOLK ZONE 2 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MAY 25, 2022 - JUNE 7, 2022 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

New Career-Readiness Facility Made Possible Through $100K State Grant The Commack Union Free School District will soon embark on construction of a mock trial courtroom at Commack High School that will bring new, real-world learning opportunities to its students and expand career readiness options for the District. The courtroom is being made possible through a $100,000 state grant secured by State Senator Jim Gaughran. The facility will complement Commack High School’s Mock Trial Program, which is a joint venture of The New York Bar Foundation, the New York State Bar Association, and the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program. In this educational program, Commack students can

gain first-hand knowledge of civil and criminal law and courtroom procedure. Objectives of the program include teaching ethics, civility, and professionalism while furthering students’ understanding of the law and the legal system. Commack students have already seen success in this program in the 2021-2022 school year. The high school mock trial team participated in the New York State Mock Trial Competition and made mock trial history for the school by placing as a finalist in the Northport Law Day Competition. This facility will add to the team’s realworld experience by giving them a true courtroom

setting. Additional benefits of creating the mock trial courtroom include boosting students’ valuable workspace readiness skills, employability, personal, professional, academic, and technical skills. “We are excited to embark on this incredible programmatic milestone for our District,” said Dr. Jordan Cox, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Commack School District. “These funds will help us create a facility where our students will apply what they learn in the classroom in an authentic experience. We are grateful for the funds, and the ability to create real-world experiences.”

Commack Board Selects New Superintendent

The Commack School District Board of Education has selected Dr. Jordan Cox as its new Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2022. Dr. Cox brings more than 20 years of experience in public education to the role, and has worked as the District’s Executive Director of Instructional Services since joining Commack Schools in 2018. Chief among Dr. Cox’s goals as Superintendent of Schools is continuing the evolution of systems designed to best prepare students for life after graduation. “My father once told me that as a child you have every door in the world open to you,” he said. “You can be anything you want, as you have a whole life ahead of you. My goal is to expose our students to as many open doors as possible while creating new ones and preparing them for life after high school. It’s about giving our students as many real-life experiences as possible.” “While we had many great candidates apply for the Superintendent of Schools position, it became clear as we went through the interview process with our finalists that Dr. Cox would bring with him an intimate knowledge of our District and that he possesses all of the leadership skills

and educational expertise required for the continual success of our District,” said Steven Hartman, President of the Commack School Board. “The Board and I are fully confident that Dr. Cox will continue to put our students first and further the success our District has seen in producing graduates that flourish.” Most recently, Dr. Cox spearheaded an effort to have Commack become the first district on Long Island to offer the International Baccalaureate® Careerrelated Programme (IBCP). This revolutionary initiative is designed for students in grades 11 and 12 and will allow Commack students to pursue a certificate in business administration or STEM before they head off to college. “This is just one part of my vision for our students,” Dr. Cox said. “Our educational continuum is built around project-based learning, and it starts at the very start of a student’s education. Our students engage in authentic, hands-on experiences both in and out of the classroom throughout their 13 years with us, and our goal is to have them take what they’re learning and connect it with a purpose that suits them.” Dr. Cox got his start in

education as a teacher for the Harborfields Central School District. There, he went on to become an administrator, eventually serving as the district’s executive director for instructional services. Dr. Cox has extensive experience overseeing K-12 curriculum, district-wide professional development, fiscally responsible budget practices, staff evaluation, technology, ENL, state reporting, UPK, guidance, assessments, and the student information system. “As a teacher, there’s nothing more rewarding than when you’re able to put something into a language a student can comprehend, and watching their eyes light up in understanding,” Dr. Cox said. “Having that impact on students is such an incredible feeling, and working as an administrator you can have that same kind of impact on whole school buildings. The students are always at the center of every decision I make.” Dr. Cox said the continued success of the Commack School District has been due to the efforts of the Board, community and all levels of staff. “We’re all interdependent; without one another, none of it would be possible.”

Renovations to Smithtown Town Hall were recently completed, just in time for the warmer weather. The project included interior and exterior repairs, improved handicap accessibility, and major infrastructure and traffic safety improvements to portions of the parking lot. Both the Smithtown Parks and the Highway departments began work early in 2022, in order to complete the project in time for the Spring season. “With so much revitalization underway and on the horizon, this much needed face lift could not have come at a better time. Our parks department has always done impeccable work, but they really have outdone themselves.

Additionally, the drainage and infrastructure work performed by the highway department will prevent future flooding from occurring which will save money and allow us to utilize resources to better serve quality of life for the public.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The entryway and facade at Town Hall had deteriorated over time. As such, the Parks Department coordinated an overall renovation. The exterior restoration includes the construction of a new platform and steps at the front entrance, new employee entrance, brick walkways leading up to the public (Main Street) entrance, a wider ramp for improved handicapped accessibility,
