Ralphy, who is a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs of Long Island, will be providing social-emotional support on Thursdays at the

school counseling center. Therapy dog organizations have reported that these special pups can boost selfesteem, reduce anxiety and stress, uplift one’s mood, enhance social interactions, have a calming effect on their humans and give

unconditional love.

The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the fiveyear life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need

for skilled workers, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,” Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Commack And Smithtown Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago. The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the Commack Service Unit 615 and Smithtown Service Unit 625; Isabel Figueroa, Samantha Simson, Chloe Nuccio, Lauren Deyulio Alessandra De Stefano, Mayah Dutta, Nicole Roemer, Kylie Schutte, Allison Hernandez and

Emily Cabello were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette

Journey before beginning their Silver Award project.

To meet the Girl Scout Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Isabel Figueroa, Samantha Simson, Chloe Nuccio created hand-made cards for school children to decorate during the COVID-19 pandemic. The

cards were given to bus drivers to acknowledge and thank them for getting the kids to school safely each day.

Lauren Deyulio and Alessandra De Stefano built much-needed cat trees to be used for hundreds of rescue animals at the Northport Cat Rescue.

Mayah Dutta, Nicole Roemer, Kylie Schutte built a 15’ x 68’ garden fence for the Suffolk County JCC’s community garden which provides fresh produce through the JCC pantry to those in need.

For her project, Allison Hernandez built 12 bluebirds houses for Hoyt Farm in Smithtown to help with the decreasing population of blue birds.

Emily Cabello hosted a Children’s Book Drive to support early childhood development and for children to have access to books. She collected over 2,300 books that were distributed throughout Long Island Head Start Centers.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

Town Supervisor. The Commack Cougars varsity boys lacrosse team competed against William Floyd in a game that showcased sportsmanship and dedication to the cause. The game was close, and both teams fought hard until the end.

The Commack Cougars emerged victorious with an 8-7 win against William Floyd in overtime.

The Commack School District is committed to honoring those who have served and ensuring that their sacrifice is never forgotten. This

event was a meaningful way to demonstrate that commitment and show appreciation for the sacrifices made by our military members and their families.

Legislator Trotta Congratulates

Eagle Scout Daniel George Shoemaker Of Troop 403

Recently, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recognized Daniel George Shoemaker of East Northport for earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor at the Burr Intermediate School in Commack.

Through his consistent dedication to the community, obtaining more than the required number of merit badges and completing

his community service project, Daniel earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Daniel designed and created a rest area by installing benches and planting flowers and shrubs for the front line health care workers at South Shore University Hospital.

At the Eagle Scout Court of Honor, Legislator Trotta presented Daniel George Shoemaker with a

proclamation recognizing his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout. “This is a tremendous moment for Nicholas, his family and friends and the other scouts. SUNY Cobleskill’s Logan Hutter Named NAC Baseball Player- Of-The-Week

The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill sophomore Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown West High School, has been named the league’s Baseball Player-of-the-Week for the week ending April 23, 2023.

The catcher/third baseman helped lead Cobleskill to five wins in six games over NAC opponents as the Fighting Tigers opened the week by sweeping the visiting Wildcats of Cazenovia College on Tuesday by scores of 6-5 and 8-7 then traveled to Canton, N.Y. over the weekend to take two-of-three games from

the host Kangaroos of SUNY Canton winning a solo game on Friday afternoon 3-1 then splitting a pair of games on Saturday taking the opener by a 21-2 margin before dropping the series finale by an 11-8

margin to improve to 1712 including a 12-1 record in NAC action to claim their third consecutive NAC Western Division Championship.

The Smithtown, N.Y. native batted .600 on the week going 9-for-15 with a .647 on-base percentage including two doubles, two home runs, a stolen base, eight runs scored and seven runs batted in.

On the season in 28 games, Hutter has batted .385 going 35-for-91 on the year with 11 doubles, five home runs, three stolen bases, 29 runs scored, 33 runs batted in while posting an on-base percentage of .482 on the year.
