the Pacific. The museum has the largest collection of privately assembled marine specimens from the pre atomic era. “My family and I have spent time at the Vanderbilt Museum and we enjoyed our visit. It is a beautiful estate, and offers so much history, in addition to being a wonderful educational facility. We are lucky to have this gem in our backyard,” said Legislator Esteban. “As a parent and former teacher, I appreciate everything that the Vanderbilt Museum has to offer. In addition to providing educational opportunities in the sciences and in history, it is also just a fun place to spend the day. We are so lucky to have this resource
here in Suffolk County and I encourage everyone to stop by for a visit.” – Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, 18th L.D. “Elizabeth WaylandMorgan, Executive Director of the Vanderbilt, said “we’re pleased that the Hall of Fishes, has been recognized on its centennial. The hundreds of beautiful specimens Vanderbilt brought back from his global explorations have delighted several generations of museum visitors and continue to be an integral part of our education programming.” The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum is located in Centerport, New York. Guide To Outdoor Lighting
L
ighting is an essential component of interior and exterior home design. Not only does lighting add style and make spaces more appealing, when done correctly, it also makes a home safer and more functional. Homeowners who plan to utilize outdoor spaces like backyards, front porches and walkways to the fullest should think carefully about lighting. These guidelines can assist with selecting outdoor lighting fixtures. Security lighting

Flood lights and security lights are a good investment for those who want to beef up visibility and security around the home. These lights are high-intensity and designed to illuminate large areas. The brightness and reach can serve as a preventive measure to keep animals and even criminals away. Motion-sensor lights will immediately engage if something crosses the path of the sensor. Some lights will remain on from dusk until dawn. Lowes Home Improvement suggests using the correct wattage on outdoor security lights so they flood an area thoroughly without affecting neighboring properties. Wall, post and ceiling lights Outdoor lighting fixtures beyond security options come in a variety of styles, according to Lamps USA. Wall lights are mounted to the outdoor wall of the home. These typically flank doorways or the garage. Post lights are often installed on the posts of decks and porches, or are free-standing on properties, providing visibility but also style. Ceiling-mounted lights may be above doorways or installed in any structure that has an overhead area. Warm-colored temperature bulbs in these fixtures can create an inviting atmosphere that is not too bright and
jarring, especially when multiple lighting fixtures are working together. When selecting lighting for wall-mounted fixtures, experts suggest sizing up if you are not sure of the size to pick, as lights will look much smaller in scale from a distance. Accent and landscape lighting

Suffolk County Legislators Manuel Esteban and Stephanie Bontempi recently presented a proclamation to Elizabeth Wayland-Morgan, Executive Director of the Vanderbilt Museum in honor of the Hall of Fishes marine museum and its 100th Anniversary. In 1910, William K. Vanderbilt II purchased 43 acres of waterfront land in Centerport and called it his Eagle’s Nest estate. In 1922, Mr. Vanderbilt built a marine museum, the first stage of his larger museum complex. Mr. Vanderbilt traveled the world to collect thousands of specimens, including fish, insects, invertebrates, birds and wild animals, along with cultural artifacts from Africa and

A bevy of accent lighting choices are available. Accent lighting is designed to enhance the mood and appearance of certain elements of a landscape. Accent lighting is not intended to add bright light. For example, upward-directed lights can be cast on trees or shrubs to accentuate their shapes. Accent lighting also may call out a structure, such as a garden or a fountain. While accent lighting may be hard-wired, homeowners who want the luxury of changing lighting can opt for solar fixtures, which are more mobile but not as bright. Additional pointers
When shopping for bulbs, consider the number of lumens. A standard 100-watt bulb produces around 1,600 lumens. Security lights should range from 700 to 1,300 lumens for optimal brightness. Other lights needn’t be so bright. Furthermore, ensure that any fixtures that are being used are safety-rated for outdoors. Wet-rated fixtures are designed to withstand direct exposure to outdoor elements, advises the design experts at Schoolhouse, a lighting and lifestyle goods company. Damp-rated fixtures are built for outdoor locations protected from harsh weather. Look for the product details or work with an electrician to choose the right lighting choices. Lighting can transform outdoors spaces for the better.

Safety First With DIY Electrical Work
H
ome improvement projects can help homeowners transform their homes. Such projects are costly, but many homeowners save money by doing some, if not all, of the work themselves. The Electrical Safety Foundation International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting electrical safety, recommends that homeowners leave electrical work to the professionals. Licensed electricians are well-trained, whereas homeowners may not be skilled enough to avoid accidents or injuries, which can prove fatal when working with electricity.

• Learn your home electrical system. Home electrical systems may include power lines, electric meters, service panels, subpanels, wiring, and more. These systems are complex, and homeowners who intend to do some DIY electrical work should familiarize themselves with their home electrical systems prior to beginning any work. The ESFI notes that knowledge of their home electrical systems can help homeowners more safely navigate them and make maintenance easier.
• Honestly assess your skills. An honest assessment of skills is absolutely necessary prior to working on an electrical system. According to the National Safety Council, injuries relating to electrical incidents typically fall into one of four categories: electrical shock, electrocution, falls, and burns. Each of these injuries is significant. For example, electric shock, which occurs when electrical current passes over or through a person’s body, involves burns, abnormal heart rhythm and unconsciousness. Given the potential for serious injury, the ESFI urges homeowners to make an honest assessment of their skills before they begin working on their home’s electrical systems. Little or no experience working with electrical systems should be considered a significant hurdle to any DIY project. • Turn the power off. It’s essential that the power to the circuit that will be worked on be turned off prior to starting any work. This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel. Similarly, when working on appliances or lamps, make sure the products are unplugged prior to working on them. • Do not touch plumbing or gas pipes when doing electrical work. The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is significant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects. Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. However, those who insist on doing such work themselves should do their homework and get to know their systems and safety protocols prior to beginning a project.

First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon To Be Held May 21 On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country. For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide. The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve
lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reflect on some things they have not quit on. As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011. If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that
you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt. Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. If your organization would like to have a booth, or you are someone who would like to volunteer at the event, please email info@Project9line.org or call 631.841.1141. For more information on Project9line, visit www. project9line.org. To register for the event, please visit w w w. e v e n t s . e l i t e f e a t s . com/22dfq.
How Color Can Affect Your Garden
F
lower gardens can add color and awe-inspiring appeal to a property. The National Gardening Association notes that gardeners can find nearly every color of the spectrum in flowering perennials. So whether you prefer soft pink, are partial to bright red or want to relax in a garden and gaze at something deep blue, chances are you’ll find a perennial to tickle your fancy.
These colors are those that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as orange and red. The NGA recommends harmonious colors for gardeners looking to create a unifying feel in their gardens without resorting to a monochromatic color scheme. Harmonious colors give off a gentle feeling that can make for a relaxing garden atmosphere.
The NGA offers the following breakdown of colors to help gardeners learn how their gardens can set the mood they’re looking for.
Monochromatic Colors
Bright Colors A garden full of bright colors like red, orange, magenta, and yellow can provide a landscape with vigor and energy. The NGA notes that brightly colored flowers can withstand especially bright sunshine, meaning gardeners can marvel at their appearance even when the sun might be adversely affecting other plants and flowers. Pastel Colors Pastels, which include soft pink, powder blue, lavender, and peach, create a tranquil feeling in a garden. This makes
Harmonious Colors
pastel colors perfect for those who want their gardens to be a relaxing, peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, particularly in urban or highly populated areas. The NGA notes that pastels may looked washed out in the midday sun, so they might be best enjoyed early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Complementary Colors Complementary colors are those that are opposite one another on the color wheel. Orange and blue are examples of complementary colors. According to the NGA, complementary colors can add creative energy, versatility and vitality to a garden.
Monochromatic gardens can be awe-inspiring even though they stick to a single color and don’t provide a wide array of colors. The NGA notes that gardeners with monochromatic gardens make them interesting by using plants of various sizes and shapes. With monochromatic color gardens, the variety of plantings is key to making this aesthetic work. When planting a garden, gardeners can choose whichever color scheme they prefer. To learn more about the effects of color on a garden, visit the National Gardening Association website at www.garden.org.
P
PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Dig A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas. Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage. Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig. Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are

Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky undertakings, and even seasoned do-ityourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. t’s no secret that a goodlooking lawn can entice buyers when selling a home, but homeowners may not realize just how much they can benefit from even the smallest investments of time and money in their home exteriors. According to the Top Agent Insights Q2 2019 Report from HomeLight, low-cost outdoor home improvements to a landscape provide sizable returns on investment. For example, the report found that a

Be sure to wait until all of the utilities have responded. Don’t dig until lines have been marked or you have received confirmation that the area is clear of facilities. Property owners must maintain and respect the marks. Always hand dig within 2 feet of marked lines to find the existing facilities before using mechanized equipment.
If gas lines are damaged or there is a gas smell when excavating, call 911 immediately from a safe area. Calling before you dig is more than a good idea − it’s the law. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars.

More than 85 percent of real estate professionals who participated in the HomeLight survey recommended other small and simple projects, including removing dirt, grime and cobwebs from a home entrance and trimming trees and shrubs prior to putting a home on the market.

ccording to the Environmental Protection Agency, homes with clock timer controlled irrigation systems use about 50 percent more water outdoors than homes without irrigation systems. Water waste can be even more significant if irrigation systems are not programmed correctly or if they have a leak. In addition, if sprinkler heads are situated incorrectly, water might be directed to areas of the lawn or garden that don’t need water, or even onto driveways and sidewalks. To reduce water waste, and save on their
monthly water utility bills, homeowners can employ WaterSense labeled irrigation controllers. Such controllers adjust irrigation schedules automatically based on local weather and landscape conditions. These systems emploqy intuitive programming controls to schedule irrigation based on the water requirements of the plants. The controllers can make it easier for homeowners to keep their lawns and gardens green even during dry periods, such as drought, while still adhering to local water utility restrictions.

SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to always call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines. “Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.” According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

The Town of Smithtown Senior Softball Team Celebrates Opening Day
Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, Councilman Tom Lohmann and Town Clerk Vinny Puleo stopped by Flynn Memorial park to help the Smithtown Patriots kick off the opening day game for the season. On Tuesday May 3rd, at 10am, the Smithtown senior softball team; the Patriots, played the Brookhaven Silver Streaks at Flynn Memorial Park. Supervisor Wehrheim wished the team and their opponents from Brookhaven the best of luck, and a memorable opening day. “The Smithtown Patriots might be just for us Seniors,
but don’t let that fool you. These guys are some of the most fierce athletes I’ve seen play the game… I love coming to opening day and hearing from the home and away teams just how much they love playing at Flynn. It gives me a great sense of pride to witness both our little leagues and our senior leagues enjoy the game on a brand new field. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t compliment Councilman Lohmann on a job well done throwing out the opening pitch. I sense a draft pick in his near future!” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
The opening pitch was thrown by Councilman Tom Lohmann, who has toyed with the notion of joining the team. The Smithtown Patriots Senior Softball Team is sponsored by the Smithtown Senior Citizens’ Department. Interested in Joining? Help New Ground and change the lives of homeless Veterans and families by supporting their 26th Annual Golf Tournament & Dinner. The event takes place on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City. Your participation will have a lasting impact on the growing number of Long Island’s homeless, seeing they get essential services to become and remain self-sufficient. After helping over 250 individuals last year, New Ground is reaching higher ground in 2022, doubling the capacity of their primary JumpStart program. This expansion provides their services for up to 50 households at a time! The agency has had tremendous success with this program helping Long Island’s homeless secure permanent, stable housing. Many more need New Ground’s specialized services as the crisis of homelessness on Long Island is deepening. Reports show that the economic crises have not had an equal impact on all: there are many who have been forced into poverty with the added costs of daily living. The agency needs your help to gift these Veterans and families with the hope of future permanent housing. Your support of the Golf Tournament & Dinner allows you to help neighbors in need and experience a fantastic day of golf. New event features include: upgraded prizes for all tournament winners, cigar station on the course, and new ways to win with a chance to Beat the Pro. Enjoy returning favorites: the brunch Bloody Mary station, 50/50 Raffle on the Putting Green Challenge, Par 3 Hole-in-One prizes, and more!

arm weather means more time to relax outdoors. For those homeowners lucky enough to have entertaining spaces outside, spring and summer provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air under the sun or stars. Over the last few years, families have become especially familiar with what works about their yards and where there is room for improvement. Pandemicrelated travel restrictions and early stayat-home mandates resulted in plenty of time spent in backyards on staycations. Even though many such restrictions have been lifted, homeowners may have seen the benefits of having functional respites right outside their doors. A backyard renovation can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. The American Society of Landscape Architects suggests homeowners budget the cost of a major landscaping project at between 5 and 10 percent of their home’s value. Nearly 1000 submissions are received each year from across the globe and are judged by a panel of professional photographers who choose the winners based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center. Grand Prize, Honorable Mentions, as well as a Best-in-Show winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, in each of
12 categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Student, Altered/ Enhanced, , Long Island/ New York and Action/Sports. Gurwin residents and staff will also weigh-in on their favorites, choosing several “Resident/ Staff Selections” from among the entries. Entry forms are available for download online at www. gurwin.org/about/photocontest or by calling the Gurwin Public Relations office at (631) 715-2757. Photographers may submit up to seven photographs - color or black and white - at a fee of $5 per photo. Contestants should send their 8”x 10” or 8”x 12” printed photos along with a check payable to Gurwin to 68 Hauppauge Rd., Commack, NY 11725, attention: Gurwin Photo Contest. Deadline for
submissions is June 15, 2022. Photos not selected for an award are repurposed as reminiscence aids, visual stimulation and art therapy, providing a source of comfort and inspiration, specifically for residents in the Center’s Memory Care Unit and Adult Day Care Programs, making each photo submission a “winner.” One of Long Island’s premier photo competitions, the Gurwin Photo Contest is made possible each year by long-time sponsor The Tiffen Company, in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and former Gurwin resident. Based in Hauppauge, NY, The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine products for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television.

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.
As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage. Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February. It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.
EOC of Suffolk also offers “Comprehensive Housing Counseling” that helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. The program provides one-to-one homeownership counseling and group counseling, as well as budget and credit counseling. Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule. For more information about EOC of Suffolk’s various housing counseling services, call 631-968-8000 or visit www. eoc-suffolk.com.
To help Long Island families keep their homes, EOC of Suffolk retains an experienced team of certified foreclosure prevention counselors who will help homeowners understand the complex foreclosure process, If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellestanuch@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

While much of EOC of Suffolk’s work is concentrated in Suffolk County, it also operates several programs that serve residents of both Suffolk and Nassau counties. One of those bi-county offerings is the organization’s Housing Counseling Services.
and talk through possible courses of action to bring a mortgage current. They will discuss loss mitigation options and inform homeowners of financial and legal resources available to them. Counselors can explain how homeowners can work with lenders or agencies on forbearance plans or loan modifications.

Rep. Zeldin Discusses Northport VA With Veterans Advisory Board, Provides Legislative Update On Tuesday, April 26, 2022, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), a U.S. Army veteran, hosted a virtual meeting with members of his Veterans Advisory Board to discuss proposed cuts to the Northport VA Medical Center (VAMC) and other issues affecting local veterans. Congressman Zeldin also provided an
update on his continued efforts to build support for veteran-focused legislation he is leading, including the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program Act. “The proposed cuts to Northport VAMC have the potential to have wide ranging effects for veterans throughout our communities who depend on Northport for their
healthcare services,” said Congressman Zeldin. “I am grateful for the members of my Veterans Advisory Board who were able to share their unique perspectives on this issue, and we will continue working together to help Long Island veterans access the high quality care they have earned.”
