TRACK STAR - On April 26th, Smithtown High School East Sophomore Jessica Martin participated in the annual Bob Pratt Smithtown Invitational Track and Field Meet held at Smithtown HS East. Jessica won the Girls High Jump with a jump of 5’4”. Aside from being an amazing athlete, Jessica is also an incredible humanitarian. At the meet, she held a raffle for various filled baskets and raised $500. Jessica will use part of the money to purchase children’s toys and pajamas for the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Center at Stony Brook Hospital. The remaining money will be donated to the Sunrise Fund which assists children with afflicted by cancer.

During American Stroke Month in May, the American Stroke Association (ASA) – a division of the American Heart Association - asks all Mainers to learn two things that may save a life. 1. Know if you are at risk for stroke. 2. Know the stroke warning signs and what to do in a stroke emergency. Stroke is the No. 1 preventable cause of disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds, yet 80 percent of strokes are preventable. According to the ASA, knowing if you are at risk for stroke is highly important, because many risk factors can be modified and controlled. The No. 1 stroke risk factor is high blood pressure. Nearly 78 million Americans have high blood pressure and many more aren’t even aware that they have it. For these reasons, the AHA urges all Mainers to check their blood pressure regularly and talk to their doctors about reaching and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Through the ASA’s Together To End Stroke initiative, the ASA provides information and tools to help people to prevent, treat and beat stroke. A free stroke risk assessment, available at StrokeAssociation. org/strokemonth helps individuals to evaluate their personal stroke risk and to work with their doctor to begin a prevention plan. Together to End Stroke, nationally sponsored by Covidien, a global healthcare product company, teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people to recognize a stroke and what to do if one occurs:

Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted
nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”
It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

A Home Away From Home
I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. After many months of labor, the island is starting to get ready for the busy season. Starting Memorial Day weekend, the concrete sidewalks which seemed so isolated will be crawling with tourists. This is not a bad thing, however,
as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty
bad shape. Thankfully, essentially all facets of the infrastructure have been repaired, and the island is better than ever. As one walks down the beach, “TrapBags” can be seen. Filled with sand, these large canvas sacks were purchased in order to create a dune. It seems as though this plan is thoroughly succeeding, possibly saving countless homes previously marked for demolition, like my own. After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

VISITING ARTIST - On April 23rd and 24th, Mrs.Conde’s and Ms. Shanian’s High School East Studio in Art students were fortunate enough to have visiting BOCES Arts-In-Ed artist, John DiNaro, come to present a sculpture workshop. Approximately 60 foundation students engaged in two days of exploratory sculpture making during three hour sessions, using materials like driftwood, shells, pine cones, bamboo and pieces of musical instruments to compose their unique sculptures. Art students worked in collaborative groups of 3, 4 or 5 to create these sculpture pieces that are being displayed in the High School East Library during the end of May.
A group of Smithtown senior citizens have been working for the past few months on a very special project for babies. According to Laura Greif, Program Director at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department, “We wanted to focus some energy on a project that would help our youngest citizens.” In areas of extreme poverty or following a natural disaster, baby care kits help young mothers
care for their babies. In an effort led by Debbie Rosenberg, Recreation Leader at the Senior Citizen Department, ten baby care kits were completed by the group. Each baby care kit included six cloth diapers, two t-shirts, two washcloths, two diaper pins, two pajamas, one crochet sweater, one crochet blanket and one receiving blanket. If it is high, work with your doctor to control it. Lowering your total cholesterol may reduce your risk for stroke. High cholesterol can also indirectly increase stroke risk by putting your at greater risk of heart disease.
• If you are diabetic, follow your doctor’s recommendations carefully to control your diabetes. Having diabetes puts you at an increased risk for stroke. • Include exercise in the activities you enjoy in your daily routine. • Enjoy a lower sodium (salt), lower fat diet. • Ask your doctor if you have circulation problems. Fatty deposits can block the arteries which carry blood from your heart to your brain. This kind of blockage can cause stroke .Sickle cell disease, severe anemia, or other diseases can cause stroke if left
untreated. Catherine stated that Stroke is a “Brain Attack,” cutting off vital blood and oxygen to the brain cells that control everything we do from speaking, to walking, and breathing. Most strokes occur when arteries are blocked by blood clots or by the gradual build-up of plaque and other fatty deposits. Some strokes can be caused by arteries rupturing when weak spots on the blood vessel wall break. In addition Catherine mentioned that every year, stroke strikes approximately 795,000 Americans, killing nearly 130,000 and forever changing the lives of many who survive. The good news is that many strokes can be prevented. New emergency treatments can help stop the brain damage and disability, if you are aware of the symptoms and get immediate attention. Bob Zebrowski, spoke briefly to the club about “Judy’s Run For Stroke Awareness”, a fundraiser taking place on Sunday, May 18th, at 9 a.m. at The Gazebo across from Nesconset Plaza, 127 Smithtown Blvd, Nesconset, New York. There will be a 5K Run and a 1-Mile Fun Walk raising awareness for strokes and those affected by them. May is Stroke Awareness Month, and The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise on Thursday, May 1st, had as their guests speakers, Catherine Videtto, RN, MSN, CCRN, ANP, CPHQ, Coordinator For Stroke Programs, at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, Smithtown, New York and Bob Zebrowski, President/Founder of Judy’s Run For Stroke Awareness and Prevention. Catherine’s presentation covered Stroke: Recognizing Signs And Symptoms And Minimizing The Risks. Her key talking points were: • Common Stroke Symptoms are Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Sudden severe headache with no known cause Learning these signs beforehand is extremely important, for when you see them you must act fast by calling 911...you could save your life or the life of someone you know. Minimizing The Risks • Know your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a leading cause of stroke. Consult your doctor if the higher number (your systolic blood pressure) is usually about 135 or if the lower number (your diastolic blood pressure) is usually over 85. • Find out if you have atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation can cause blood to collect in the chambers of your heart. This blood can form clots and cause a stroke.

On Saturday, May 10th, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) an organization that benefits and supports more than 3,500 individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental illness and traumatic brain injury, will join Best Buddies International for their annually held Best Buddies Friendship Walk at Hauppauge High School, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. As a non profit dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that TIMES A HOPPIN - The children from Cleary School for the Deaf certainly enjoyed creates opportunities their visit from these special visitors. The Holy Name Society treated the children with for friendship, employment and holiday surprises and lots of springtime cheer. Everyone had a hoppin’ good time! leadership for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
(IDD), Best Buddies has more than 1,700 chapters worldwide, 12 of which are high school programs throughout Long Island. Focused on fostering one-to-one friendships between students with and without IDD, the Best Buddies High School Program helps students find kinship amongst one another during what is a truly important time in a young person’s life. The walk, which will include games and activities, was created in 2009 to fund more of these secondary level initiatives on Long Island. Due to lack of funding, Best Buddies New York was forced to close the Long Island office as well

Friendship Walk as 12 Long Island Middle School chapters. The funds raised from the Long Island Friendship Walk will enabled Best Buddies to reopen a local headquarters and in doing so, directly benefit the districts on the Long Island waiting list. Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), a member of the Mt. Sinai High School Chapter, will have a team of both staff and individuals. In addition to FREE’s team, “Friendships are FREE”, the organization will also donate flowers grown through the FREE Saddle Rock Ranch program in Middle Island. The FREE Drumline will provide musical entertainment for walkers.
Long Island’s Best Hauppauge High School senior Amanda Dennis’ acrylic on canvas painting titled The Fourth Sister was featured in Long Island’s Best high school exhibition at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, New York, from March 28th through OUTSTANDING SUPPORT - Cleary School for the Deaf recently honored the April 27th. Now in its 18th year, the Meridian Capital Group for their outstanding support of our student’s educational needs. This group, led by Mr. Ralph Herzka, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, has gone above and beyond in helping Cleary School to realize its goals. Cleary School was pleased to honor Mr. Herzka and his team for their generosity.
annual Long Island’s Best high school exhibition is a longstanding hallmark of the Museum’s educational programming. This juried exhibition provides select students with the unparalleled opportunity to exhibit their artwork in the Heckscher Museum’s galleries and connect with the broader Long Island
community. This year, the Museum received 310 student artwork entries from 53 schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Heckscher Museum Curator Lisa Chalif selected 85 works in various media for display in the exhibition.

The Art League of Long Island’s Art In The Park Fine Art & Craft Fair returns to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday May 31st and Sunday June 1st. Now in its 47th year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers from the metropolitan area. More than 70 artists and craftspeople will show and sell original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, photographs,
ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, wearable art, and more. Prizes will be awarded to artists and craftspeople for superior artistry and craftsmanship. The event will also feature live art demonstrations by Art League instructors, family-friendly hands-on activities, and live music throughout both days. A variety of delicious treats prepared by onsite food vendors round
out the experience. A raffle will run throughout the weekend, winner to be announced Sunday afternoon. Proceeds will benefit the Art League of Long Island, a not-forprofit organization serving the community since 1955. This rain or shine event will be open to the public 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. both days. Admission is free for the entire family.

Senior Citizen Of The Year County Executive Bellone recently announced the winner of the Senior Citizen Of The Year Award, Ms. Sally Economou, a resident of Smithtown. Sally will receive her award at the annual Suffolk County senior celebration luncheon which will be held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on May 15th. Nominations for these awards were received by the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and the Suffolk County Senior Citizen Advisory Board and staff of the office reviewed all nominations. “I am happy to announce that Sally Economou has been chosen as the Suffolk County Senior Citizen of the Year,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Our senior community has and continues to contribute to the overall quality of life in Suffolk County. I thank the countless senior volunteers across the County who work tirelessly every day
to serve others and look forward to their continued involvement in bettering our communities.” Sally was chosen for her outstanding community service and commitment to serving others. Sally joined The Retired Senior Volunteer (RSVP) program 18 years ago and has been actively involved since then. Sally is one of the friendly voices that you hear on the other end of the line for homebound elderly in Telephone Reassurance Program (TR). Her memory for detail is impressive as you hear her converse with those that often feel isolated. Every Friday, Sally can be found chatting with a senior about their cat, the price of home heating fuel, a TV show, a scientific finding, or suggesting a community resource that might benefit them. She is often teased that she would be a perfect TV talk show host. Sally has “adopted” the neediest of the TR recipients and visits them
at home occasionally for a cup of tea and a bit of socialization they are so hungry for. When Sally isn’t at RSVP’s Telephone Reassurance Program, her other community involvement is being a part of Visiting Nurse Service of Suffolk County where she is a compassionate and gentle hospice worker. The hospice setting is not a sought after volunteer placement, but one that Sally excels in. Sally has experienced losses in her own life, yet has given of her time and talent by volunteering with the agency since she was 63, freely giving close to 5,000 hours of herself. Recently, Sally made the commitment to have her dog trained as a service dog. Both she and her pup graduated successfully and Sally travels weekly to various nursing homes and rehabilitation centers to provide the patients a bit of canine comfort.
