The career and technical teachers from the technology department at Smithtown Central School District have been hard at work creating masks and shields for staff at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center and Stony Brook University Hospital. Using their 3D printers, the teachers created and delivered 140 masks/ shields so far. Teachers Brian Costello, Connor Kelly, Dave Savage, Caitlin Caputo and Sean Tomasello have been volunteering their time, using the 3D printers from the school program to make the
masks and shields. They have been working with Smithtown High School East 2019 graduate Ben Levine. During his time at Smithtown High School East, Levine was very involved in the career and technical education department and was a member of the robotics team. He set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to purchase the filament and transparency film needed to make the masks. Levine has been working with the teachers to print them and distribute them to
frontline workers at the two hospitals. “The teachers have been really passionate about wanting to do what they can to give back and assist the frontline workers,” said Christine LoFrese, career and technical education direction, Smithtown Central School District. “It is so nice to see them all working together with a former grad on this project of coming up with the design and then implementing it. They are putting all their skills to good use and modeling what they teach to the students in their classes.”

When Smithtown High School West sophomore Jensen Herbst heard that doctors and nurses were experiencing severe pain from wearing surgical masks for their 12-hour shifts, she decided to do something about it. She read that a small piece of plastic called a surgical mask tension release band could help alleviate the pain. The bands have
hooks that hold the strings of the mask and remove the pressure from behind the wearer’s ears. Herbst was able to find a 3D printing file that was posted on the National Institute of Health website and got to work. During the last week, she printed 65 bands that she delivered to Stony Brook Hospital. “Printing these bands has given me motivation
during these challenging times,” she said. Her next plan of action is to begin printing face shields. Smithtown High School West science research coordinator Dr. Joanne Figueiredo said, “what Jensen is doing is just one example of the many ways that our amazing students are helping others during this difficult period.”

Frontline medical workers providing lifesaving treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip amid the COVID-19 outbreak were treated to a special delivery of several hundred meals donated by the Barasch McGarry law firm at lunchtime on Saturday, April 25. For weeks, these medical workers have confronted an unprecedented crisis, as local hospitals provide health care for thousands of patients affected by the coronavirus even as their workers lacked access to basic safety equipment to prevent the spread of the disease. Barasch McGarry, a longtime advocate for first responders and the entire 9/11 community, has also provided meals for medical professionals at Glen Cove Hospital, New York Presbyterian in Manhattan, Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, Stony Brook
University Hospital, and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. In addition, snacks and sports drinks have been donated to 14 area police precincts, in partnership with the FealGood Foundation, the Retired Sergeants Association of the New York City Police Department, and the New York State Fraternal Order of Police, Nassau Police Lodge 69, and groceries have been delivered to local food pantries for distribution. “These people are our heroes – they need to be fed and they need to be taken care of, so they can take care of us,” said Michael Barasch, Managing Partner of Barasch McGarry. “In this
time of need, we are proud to support first responders who have been forced to sleep in their cars and the medical providers working extended shifts to protect the public health. Until then, our son had been taking piano lessons from several local teachers but we had to travel to their houses and sometimes spent more time on the road than with the actual lesson. After being unable to find a teacher locally who would support Level 5 and 6 NYSSMA, it was time to look for a new teacher. We found Diana’s Music Lessons online and Diana matched us up with Dian Torees. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed
and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” To help support Guardians of Rescue, please make a donation online at www. guardiansofrescue.org/donate.

A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon.
